SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Scattered showers sprinkled all across San Diego County Saturday, bringing with it up to a quarter inch of rain. While rain totals were not significant, it was the reason for hundreds of car accidents.At 11:40 AM, 10News found a passenger van flipped onto its side. The driver said he was turning onto the Home on-ramp on WB 94 when he hydroplaned and flipped over. With some help from good Samaritans, he was able to climb up out of the passenger side door. He was not hurt. There were no passengers. One of many solo spin-outs happened on the 163 S to the 8 E on-ramp. The driver said at around 12:30 PM, he lost control of his truck at the top of the loop, then smashed into the concrete barrier. He said he felt lucky he did not roll down into a 50-foot embankment like another car did just a few hours prior in the same spot.RELATED: Check today's San Diego forecast10News crews also saw countless fender benders and flatbed tow trucks roaming the highways. Mother nature also wreaked havoc onto herself. At around 2:30 PM, a tree toppled onto Northbound 805 near Plaza South.Branches partially blocked the slow lane until clean up crews arrived.By afternoon, the rain clouds started to concentrate over North County. A three-car crash happened along Westbound 78 near the Nordahl Rd on-ramp in San Marcos. The small red vehicle ended up mangled, and the Prius somehow climbed up an embankment. Firefighters said all airbags on the Prius were deployed, and thankfully no-one was injured. 1526

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California state appeals court has thrown out the sole conviction against an immigrant who fatally shot a woman on the San Francisco waterfront in 2015.The 1st District Court of Appeal on Friday overturned a gun conviction against Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate because the judge failed to instruct the jury on one of his defenses.Garcia-Zarate was acquitted of murder in the killing of Kate Steinle, who was on a pier with her father when she was shot in the back in July 2015.The case of Garcia-Zarate, who was in the country illegally and had been deported five times, touched off a fierce immigration debate.He said he unwittingly picked up the gun wrapped in a T-shirt and it fired accidentally.Garcia-Zarate is in custody and facing federal gun charges. 783

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Surfers and swimmers stayed away from San Diego waters after the National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory Saturday. Conditions were deemed dangerous for Southern California coastlines, with the highest waves reaching eight to ten feet in San Diego County.10News met San Diego locals Derek Janich and his daughter Kaylee at Ocean Beach. “No plans to get into the water today. Maybe on a more warm day,” Janich said. “It’s a little blown out and a little cold, lately. Definitely big surf today. You have to be careful when you’re in the water.”But out-of-towners Benjamin Guffee and his children could not resist dipping their toes in the San Diego waters. “It’s in a pool back in St. Louis, so they’re not used to this,” Guffee said. With gusty winds, water temperatures in the mid-50’s and waves jumping onto the Ocean Beach Pier, access to the pier was closed off, disappointing some visitors.“It’s normally, open — a nice walk. You’ll have some vendors and people just kind of doing their thing,” Janich said. The high surf advisory ends Monday at 2 am. 1094
