WAYNE COUNTY — Four children were killed when a semi struck a car that was slowing in a construction zone on an Indiana interstate Thursday evening.It happened shortly after 5 p.m. on eastbound I-70 in Wayne County, about 70 miles east of Indianapolis.According to Indiana State Police, troopers arrived to find a Chevrolet car and a semi pulling a box trailer both on fire, just west of a construction zone.State police investigators believe the truck did not slow down when it came upon slowed traffic near the construction zone and slammed into the back of a car, pushing it into another semi.Witnesses told the Wayne County Sheriff's Office that the driver of the semi that struck the car from behind was operating in an "erratic manner" prior to the crash. Investigators say evidence revealed that stopped traffic was not a contributing factor to the crash.Preliminary toxicology reports indicated that the driver had multiple drugs in his system at the time of the crash. WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington’s National Zoo says panda matriarch Mei Xiang has given birth and is caring for her newborn attentively.The National Zoo said the birth happened at 6:35 p.m. ET on Friday.Watch the zoo’s panda-cam. Mei Xiang has had three previous cubs. All were eventually transported to China under an agreement with the Chinese government. Mei Xiang has been spending most of her time in a small den indoors, where she has created a nest out of branches. In an Instagram post Friday afternoon, the zoo says, "Mei Xiang has become increasingly restless and started body licking — both signs that labor has probably started!”Mei, at 22, would be the oldest giant panda to successfully give birth in the United States. WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump is continuing his futile appeal to battleground state lawmakers to subvert the votes of their constituents.The president has reached out twice to Pennsylvania House Speaker Bryan Cutler, a Republican, to see what might be possible for Trump to do about the state's presidential vote.A person briefed on the matter told The Associated Press that Trump pressed for the state’s legislature to replace the electors for President-elect Joe Biden with those loyal to Trump. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.Cutler’s spokesperson, Mike Straub, says Trump did not pressure Cutler to take any sort of action and that the call was informational.Cutler and other top Republican lawmakers have said that, legally, the state legislature has no legal power to override the will of the voters and select a slate of presidential electors.Biden won Pennsylvania by more than 80,000 votes and the state has already certified its election. Nearly every other state has certified as well and Biden has secured more than the 270 Electoral College votes needed to take the White House.The Trump campaign has filed a series of lawsuits in several swing states, claiming widespread voter fraud without substantial proof.
