SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of ambushing a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop and trying to sexually assault her pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a half-dozen felony charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense.Christopher Merron, 28, was ordered held on million bail. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was shot in the hand during a large party near San Diego State University Sunday, police said. Police received reports of gunfire at about 12:30 a.m. on Art Street in the college area. Officers found a car with a bullet hole, but no victim. They found some shell casings at the scene. Later, a man with a bullet wound to the hand showed up at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. Police went to the hospital to interview the victim, but he was uncooperative, police said. 492

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A short-circuit on a power line near the intersection of Interstate 805 and state Route 905 knocked out electrical service to about 1,600 nearby homes and businesses Tuesday and sparked a small brush fire. The switch malfunction on a utility pole on Hawken Drive in Otay Mesa occurred shortly before 1 p.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The equipment failure sent melted materials dripping onto the ground, setting grass and other vegetation on fire, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to subdue the flames, which blackened about a half-acre of brushy terrain, Munoz said. No structural damage or injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials are preparing to transfer the remains of seven U.S. Marines -- including one from Montebello -- and a Navy sailor to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware over the next few days to be prepared for burial.The remains were recovered Friday after the Marines went missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. "We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort."Marine and Navy pallbearers will place the remains aboard an aircraft bound for Dover AFB in a solemn transfer, officials said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1.3 million ballots had been received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters by mid-afternoon today, with around 51,000 votes cast at polling locations so far.The San Diego County Registrar's Office reported 1.36 million ballots collected by mid-afternoon out of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county.With county polling locations open early, about 126,000 residents were able to cast their votes in person over the past four days, the Registar's Office said.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one. Voters who prefer to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place on Election Day can do so until 8 p.m.An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.County voters also have until 8 p.m. to drop off mail ballots at 125 drop-off locations throughout the county, which can found on the Registrar's website.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters.
