CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - North San Diego County air travelers will soon have a new flight option from McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad.California Pacific Airlines said Friday it would start taking passengers to Pacific Southwest destinations before the end of summer.Company president and CEO Paul Hook says the airline will succeed where others have failed because it will be able to offer something they could not: reliability.“What we’re looking at here an Embraer 145 regional jet,” said Hook as he looked at the 50-seat jet on the tarmac.Potential investors and ‘Airplane’ actor Robert Hays were on board a flight that left Friday for Sacramento. Hays represented a blood donor charity which partners with regional airlines to deliver rare blood types quickly.“All the doors are set up to open really easily - so, when I go up and announce I’ll be your captain today, I want to see how fast the plane empties,” Hays said. The airline will offer service to cities including San Jose, Phoenix and Las Vegas. 1023

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - More than two and a half years after Team 10 first reported about a North County property management company accused of stealing money from clients, the victims are finally getting their money back.Kelley Zaun owned Carousel Properties, a Carlsbad property management company. Victims first told Team 10 in 2016, they hired her to pay fees associated with their rentals. They said she did not pay those fees. She was accused of taking roughly 0,000 from victims, according to investigators. In 2018, Zaun faced 29 felonies for embezzlement, according to Deputy District Attorney Anna Winn. Zaun entered into a plea deal and agreed to a year in custody. With the help of the DA’s office, Zaun’s former clients were able to get their money back through the Department of Real Estate’s Consumer Recovery Account. RELATED: Team 10: Police investigating Carlsbad companyStephen Lerner, the Assistant Commissioner for Legal Affairs for the department, said so far, 23 victims have been reimbursed through the account. Other victims’ payments are still processing. They have been able to reimburse 2,084.68 thus far.The Consumer Recover Account is an option for fraud victims when trying to recoup money from the person who took it from them. In order to utilize the fund, Lerner said there must be a criminal or civil court order for the defendant to pay back money he or she took. If victims cannot get refunded from the person who stole it, they can apply through the Department of Real Estate (DRE).Winn said she volunteered to be the victims’ liaison with the DRE, as the process for reimbursement is lengthy and many of the victims were elderly. One of Zaun’s victims told Team 10 he is “extremely grateful” for the DA’s office work on this case. RELATED: Carlsbad company owner faces felonies for stealing moneyVictims started receiving reimbursements within the past couple of weeks. Money for the account comes from license fees. Lerner told Team 10 there are approximately 421,000 people with a license under their department, which includes broker and salesperson’s licenses. 12 percent of the license fee paid goes to the account.Since 1964, the DRE has paid more than million to victims. Approximately 54 percent of all applications are approved.RELATED: Homeowners: Carlsbad company owes them thousandsDistrict Attorney Summer Stephan told Team 10 in a statement: “In addition to a conviction and holding this defendant accountable, we also wanted to do our best to make the victims financially whole. Working closely with the Department of Real Estate, we were able to get a significant amount of money returned to victims and it’s gratifying to see the funds collected through real estate license fees used as intended— to un-do the financial damage done by the defendant in this case.” 2838

CARMEL VALLEY (KGTV) - Schools are urging parents to learn more about the hit Netflix show '13 Reasons Why' so they can have a conversation with their kids. The first season of the show came out in March of 2017, and immediately after searches on Google relating to suicide skyrocketed.Particularly, "how to commit suicide" up?26%, "suicide prevention" rose 23% and "suicide hotline number" was up 21% according to a research paper published in JAMA International Medicine and CNN.At Carmel Valley Middle School, they faced that very serious issue personally. Three 7th graders, Madison, Lauren and Ximena saw their friend, who moved to LA, posting her pain on social media. She was cutting."She was posting a lot of videos on social media holding up an exact-o-knife and talking about all this," Madison said."I found out first and texted both of them and said we have to do something about it," Ximena said it was on her Snapchat story.Madison said they were taught in P.E. that this kind of act is a plea for help. They went to their counselor, Karen Infantino who went the extra step, reaching out to a counselor at the friend's new school, ensuring she got the help she needed."And was able to reach out and make sure that she was in a good place but it’s also really important for me to make sure that any student that comes to me feels listened to and acknowledged," Infantino said. The sentiment of being heard could've changed the entire plot of '13 Reasons Why.'The main character of the dramatic series reveals the reasons she committed suicide. A topic school principal Cara Dolnik doesn't take lightly."Subjects of the show are sexual assault and there’s a part about rape and bullying and suicide, it’s very heavy so it’s really important that they do watch this if their kids are interested in it it actually is an avenue for them to have these conversations," she said. The series rolls out May 18th, and Carmel Valley Middle proactively sent out a letter to educate parents."Parents should have conversations with their kids about everything and that’s not always easy so you have to find a way in to have that conversation," she said.A conversation these three girls already had with their parents, "It’s just really scary because nothing like that has ever happened before," Lauren said. All of them thankful and relieved they could help their friend, and hopeful to help others by sharing their message. If you or someone you know has had suicidal thoughts, please contact the crisis line at 888-724-7240. 2573

California Democrat Gil Cisneros has defeated Republican Young Kim in a closely watched House race, adding yet another blue seat to the party's new House majority.Cisneros, a former Navy officer, will represent California's racially diverse 39th Congressional District, which was previously held by retiring Republican Rep. Ed Royce.Kim, who was seen as a charismatic potential successor to Royce, her one-time boss, finally succumbed to her opponent on Sunday. In a concession published to Facebook, Kim said she believes that the "competitive nature of this election shows that my message and service to this community resonated."The Democratic win in the district adds to several other pickups for the party in the districts representing Orange County, a place that used to be reliably Republican. Democrats now control seven seats representing the county, four of which are pickups from Republicans. 910
