McDonald's is investing billion into their fast-food chains. Franchises across the country will be getting a new modern, high-tech look. The fast-food mogul says these updates will enhance the guest experience. Not only is it great for business, but it's great for communities. Franchise operator Laura Bucar says in her 40 years of doing business, McDonald's has never invested this much money into it's existing chains. "When we decide to move on anything, what that creates for the community, as far as jobs and resources, is incredible,” says Bucar. In order to create an incredible experience, McDonald's is investing millions of dollars into nearly every state to update their restaurants.“We just finished ours in July, and I can’t tell you how many electricians and plumbers locally that were sourced to come in, and even digital and technical people and so it really adds to the economy,” says Bucar.Each fast food restaurant is able to customize their artwork inside. Bucar is excited to give visibility to local artists. Not only is McDonald's offering jobs in the community for construction workers, but they are also adding a handful of positions inside their restaurants, too. They include mobile service pickup, table service and a guest enhancement lead (GEL). The GEL will help guest use the new kiosks to order their food when in a rush.  1432

Mila Kunis donates money every month to Planned Parenthood under the name of Vice President Mike Pence, she recently told talk show host Conan O’Brien.Her repeated donation under Pence’s name is not a “prank,” she said, but a way to peacefully protest while supporting the organization."I don't look at it as a prank," Kunis said. "I literally -- I strongly disagree -- and this is my little way of showing it. It's a peaceful protest."Before she went into detail about her donations, the former “That 70s Show” star told Conan that she might get “a lot of hate mail” and she apologized if her actions offended anyone."It's not so much a prank as much as I disagreed with some of the stuff that Pence was doing and was trying to do," Kunis said."So as a reminder that there are women out there in the world that may or may not agree with his platform, I put him on a list of recurring donations that are made in his name to Planned Parenthood."This was met with loud applause from the audience."Every month, to his office, he gets a little letter that says, 'an anonymous donation has been made in your name,'" Kunis said. 1130

Marine Sergeant Richard Murphy was missing in action for more than seven decades in a World War II battle on the Pacific front.Murphy’s amphibious landing craft got stuck on a reef and everyone had to abandon ship to get to shore. He stayed behind to help another wounded Marine."That’s when shell fire came in and blew up the craft and Uncle Richard and his fellow marine were never seen again alive," said Jerry Murphy, Richard’s nephew.Jerry and his cousin Jeanne Robinson’s DNA were used to identify Richard’s remains that washed up on the beach in Sia Pan in 1944. Jerry, along with his cousins, had never met Sergeant Murphy, yet the family bond is strong."It’s an amazing family experience it’s got us all here together," said Jerry.Sgt. Murphy had more than just his duties as a fighting Marine."Uncle Richard, in addition to carrying his pack as a marine and his M-1 rifle, had a typewriter with him because he was a war correspondent," said Jerry.Funerals are usually a solemn occasion."But this is a celebratory time,"Jerry said. "It’s a happy and upbeat type of event and so extraordinary."Robinson is Sgt. Murphy’s niece and never met her uncle but was well aware of his military achievements. "He was always with us. He was that handsome Marine looking out of the picture frame, he was that empty chair at Thanksgiving, he was always the person we heard stories about," said Robinson.And the man of those stories is home where the family finally could reach out and touch their uncle — a Marine, an American, a hero. One of Sgt. Murphy’s last correspondents home was to his mother. "He said, 'you know, I don’t want to die but I’m not afraid to die for my county' and that just makes us oh so proud of Uncle Richard," said Jerry.Sgt. Michael Allman says his platform of "direct democracy" sets him apart from the other candidates running for the 52nd Congressional seat. At an event in La Jolla Tuesday announcing his candidacy, Allman explained how he would use technology to asses his constituents positions on major issues. Allman says  he has designed a software program that would allow voters to go online and voice their opinions. The program will ensure that only registered voters can weigh in and also makes sure they're voting just once. The investor and former energy company executive is one of several Republicans challenging Democratic representative Scott Peters in next year's election.  708

McClatchy, the publisher of more than two dozen daily newspapers across the country, will reduce its staff by approximately three and a half percent, cut expenses across the company, and implement other measures to save money, the company announced in an internal memo obtained by CNN on Tuesday.Craig Forman, president and chief executive officer of McClatchy, told employees in the memo that the decisions were "painful and difficult" but "necessary to protect and further our future." He placed blame, in part, on the decline in revenue from print advertising."Talented and passionate people who have dedicated their energy to our mission, colleagues we call friends and rely on everyday, will leave the company," Forman wrote. "We thank you all for your commitment to McClatchy and to local journalism and wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors."A spokesperson for the company told CNN that the staff reductions would affect nearly 140 employees.Forman said that the employees impacted have been notified. He also said other measures were being taken to reduce operating costs, including cutting expenses across the company and having senior leaders take two weeks of unpaid leave.Forman, however, said that "most of our expense savings are in legacy areas" which would allow the company to "continue to build our future as a digital-DNA, journalism-driven media business."Among the newspapers McClatchy operates are the Miami Herald, Sacramento Bee, Lexington Herald-Leader, The Charlotte Observer, The Herald-Sun, The Wichita Eagle, and The Kansas City Star.The cuts come at a time when local newspapers continue to struggle.
