SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The public’s help is being sought in finding the driver in an Ocean Beach hit-and-run crash that killed a skateboarder.On June 4, at around 10:30 p.m., Cameron Loren was riding his skateboard westbound in the 4500 block of Voltaire Street, in the middle of the road, when he was struck by a westbound vehicle from behind.San Diego police said the driver fled the scene, leaving the 25-year-old Loren on the street with injuries.Emergency crews responded to the incident, but Loren was declared dead at the scene, according to police.A description of the driver was not available, and investigators believe the vehicle that struck Loren was a light-colored sedan that may have a damaged windshield and roofline.Anyone with information on this case, including the location of the driver or the vehicle involved, is urged to contact the SDPD Traffic Division at 858-495-7807 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to ,000 for information that leads to an arrest. 1026

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three San Diego County schools have been recognized as 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools. Aviara Oaks Elementary School in Carlsbad, Del Mar Hills Academy in Del Mar and Torrey Pines Elementary School in San Diego were all honored with the award. “Congratulations to these schools that have tremendous programs dedicated to, and invested in, creating state-of-the-art learning and teaching environments,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said. “This recognition is well-deserved, and special thanks go to the educators and the school communities that meet students’ unique needs in order for all of their students to reach their full potential.”Schools are recognized based on school-wide student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego City Council Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of adding movable tiny homes to the list of options on how to offer more affordable housing to citizens.Tiny houses are similar to granny flats, but smaller. Tiny houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are equipped with the basics for living, sleeping, and cooking. They range in size from 150 square feet to 400 square feet and cost between ,000 and 0,000.Tiny homes can help create an affordable option for low-income residents that doesn’t require a taxpayer subsidy.City officials said, “A significant portion of households in San Diego can afford a movable tiny house as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The average cost of rent for a tiny home is 0 a month. A property owner would recover their initial investment in eight years. After that, the rent from the tiny house could help cover their mortgage and other expenses.”Currently, the city allows homeowners to build accessory dwelling units on their properties. With Tuesday’s approval, homeowners can add tiny homes to their properties.“Moveable tiny homes are a great option that naturally increases affordable housing at no cost to taxpayers. It’s a win for the homeowner, it’s a win for the renter, and it’s a win for the taxpayer,” said San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman. “I appreciate my colleagues support for this important housing reform. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - These days, it's hard to go a block in the East Village without seeing a restaurant that's out of business.Recently, the Tilted Kilt, Market Hall, Smashburger, and Sol Cal Cafe have all shuttered. "I just noticed constant, consistent places are closing around here," said Ed Korb, who was visiting the area Thursday.Alina Ahmed, who owns Cafe De L'Opera, on J Street, says it's ever-increasing rents, and higher costs like minimum wage and electricity that are squeezing her, and causing her colleagues to close. She's been in business for five years, and says it gets harder each time the calendar turns. "Everybody thinks that because you're close to Petco Park, which is a great location, you're going to make a lot of money," she said. Ahmed says she tried keeping her cafe open during Padre games, but even then the foot traffic couldn't justify it.The East Village Association, which keeps a directory businesses, said in a statement that this part of the evolution of the neighborhood."As the East Village community continues to grow, so to does the sophistication of our businesses housing and residents, which lends to a competitive higher end urban environment, offering a uniquely downtown San Diego experience," the association said. A spokeswoman for the Tilted Kilt, which also closed its Mission Valley location earlier this year, said the owner of the space near Petco Park wanted to go in a different direction.   1502
