Amazon’s sales rose 26% in the first quarter as the COVID-19 crisis made the online retailer an even bigger part of many lives, but profits were down 30% due to expenses from dealing with the virus. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos gave a clear message to shareholders, saying they “may want to take a seat,” because there are big challenges ahead and they won’t be easy or cheap to overcome. The company says it will spend billion this quarter on initiatives related to the pandemic.
Among them, Huawei Technologies was manufacturing at more than 90 percent of its capacity, Gree Electric Appliances at nearly 80 percent and Midea Group at more than 70 percent.
Among the eight new employees, the highest salary goes to Zhong Zhao, Ph. D from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Among the countries involved in the initiative, the company plans to develop in Mongolia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Russia.
Amazon’s chances appeared to improve last week when a federal judge shot down Oracle’s bid to be re-considered for the lucrative deal. In the spring, Oracle sued the Department of Defense, claiming the procurement process was tailor-made for Amazon.
