SAN ONOFRE, Calif. (KGTV) - On Tuesday, two Southern California congressmen toured the shuttered San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, or SONGS. There was an announcement made to the press about new legislation, amid environmental and safety concerns at the facility.Representative Harley Rouda (D-CA-48) told reporters, “We both recognize that we have an issue here.” He and Representative Mike Levin (D-CA-49) got a firsthand look at the controversial conditions inside SONGS. The two representatives serve districts that cover north coastal San Diego into Orange County, where SONGS is located. “Today, I’m pleased to announce that when I return to Washington, I’ll be introducing new legislation to ensure the spent fuel here at SONGS receives top priority from the federal government for disposal,” said Rep. Levin. His newest effort will be called the Spent Fuel Prioritization bill. To decommission the power plant, crews have been transferring spent nuclear fuel into square vaults on the beach until the government figures out what to do with them, next, which will likely involve transferring them to a remote, out-of-state location. The congressmen are calling for more federal oversight after safety concerns were raised about the integrity of the fuel storage canisters. (KGTV) - Business leaders on the U.S. side of the border are worried that President Trump's threat of tariffs against Mexico over illegal immigration could cause a sharp decline in sales.In the week after the president announced his plan to impose a 5 percent tariff on Mexican goods, the peso dropped nearly 4 percent in value. That means it's worth less compared to the U.S. dollar.Local shop owner Sunil Gakhreja, who is also a member of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, said 99 percent of his customers come from Mexico. SANTA ANA (CNS) - Two more people in Orange County have tested positive locally for the novel coronavirus, health officials said today, but federal test results are still pending to confirm the diagnoses.According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, the cases are a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s who had recently traveled to countries with widespread outbreaks of what is officially known as COVID-19. The pair tested positive in Orange County, but test results were sent to the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm the results. "The more you look for something, the more likely you are to find it," said Dr. Nichole Quick, the county's health officer. "Now that our Public Health Laboratory is able to perform COVID-19 testing, we expect to see more cases here in Orange County.
