SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A group of families in San Marcos is creating some outdoor learning pods when schools open with distance learning this fall.Like for so many others, distance learning in the spring was an exercise in distraction for the Holman family: Lauren and her husband, both working from home, along with 5-year-old Isabella, and 7-year-old Bradley, who tried to focus during class."Any time the live meetings with his teachers would go more than 20 or 30 minutes, he would start to get distracted," said Lauren Holman.Meanwhile, Lauren was trying to juggle her kids' needs with her job as a full-time online teacher."It was overwhelming and hectic, definitely a lot of stress," said Holman. That stress was revisited when she heard about schools opening with only distance learning."Internally I freaked out a bit, saying this is impossible," said Holman. So, she looked into what was possible. She and eight other families are creating two different learning pods."We have a small group of trusted families," said Holman. In one pod were Isbaella and three other kindergartners. In another, Bradley and five other 2nd graders. All are classmates at Twin Oaks Elementary."The parents will act as facilitators. I equate them with a substitute teacher who helps execute the lesson plan," said Holman.Parents will take turns, each taking a day with one group of kids to make sure they stay on track, offering one-on-one help. The micro-schools will be held outside, in back yards and parks. Canopies owned by the families will help with the sun."Trying to keep it safe. Promote social distancing," said Holman. Each student will be given their own box of supplies. Handwashing and hand sanitizing will be emphasized. The outdoor setting will offer options for socializing. Holman hopes her pods will give her and the other parents a break while giving her kids a little normalcy."I hope they are able to get the same experience in the classroom, as far as their academics. I also want them to smile when they think of their school year," said Holman. 2069

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Airbnb announced Thursday that it’s banning all parties and events at the listings on its website to comply with limits on gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. The San Francisco-based company says the party ban applies to all future bookings on Airbnb and it will remain in effect indefinitely until further notice.Additionally, Airbnb says the occupancy at its listings will be capped at 16 people. Though, the company says it’s considering a potential exception process for specialty and traditional hospitality venues, like boutique hotels.“We also understand that 16 is not a magic number, and issues can occur with groups of any size,” wrote the company. “To be clear, we are not sanctioning smaller gatherings with this policy and all community members are expected to comply with local health restrictions on gatherings. We are capping guests at 16 in these large properties as one step amongst several, all designed to mitigate any efforts to misuse an Airbnb for a party.”Airbnb says guests will be informed about its party rules and told that they may be “legally pursued” by the company if they violate the policy.Unauthorized parties have actually always been prohibited at Airbnb listings and the company says 73% of its listings already ban them in their house rules.Over the last year or two, Airbnb has begun imposing stricter limits, starting with a global ban on “party houses,” or listings that create persistent neighborhood nuisance. And when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, a new policy was introduced that required all users to adhere to local coronavirus mandates.“However, in many large jurisdictions, public health mandates on gatherings have changed – and in some places swung back and forth in response to the changing rates of COVID cases – as have regulations on bars, clubs and pubs,” wrote Airbnb. “Some have chosen to take bar and club behavior to homes, sometimes rented through our platform. We think such conduct is incredibly irresponsible – we do not want that type of business, and anyone engaged in or allowing that behavior does not belong on our platform.”Based on these developments, the company says instituting a global ban on parties and events is in the best interest of public health. 2265

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom met with San Diego leaders in San Ysidro Thursday morning to discuss border-related topics and what is being done to help migrants. Newsom hosted a round table discussion at El Rincon Restaurant in San Ysidro around 10 am."I don't have any hope... I don't have any faith in the people who are making the decisions," Luz Camacho Espinoza said. The entire table agreeing they're tired of the militarization at the border and spreading fear."Walking home from school I've now seen tanks, trucks, and carriers pass through my childhood streets," SDSU student Hector Castro said. One woman who grew up in San Ysidro chimed in, "there is no crisis here." Castro said the focus needs to shift to real crises like affordable housing and environmental health. "You know there's all this traffic, all these cars all these trucks all this gas, all this air pollution that's being placed on our town," he said. The leaders said it was important to educate the public that San Ysidro is a vibrant town, full of families, not a dangerous area full of criminals. He added the town is intertwined in many ways with Tijuana, saying not only are there families on both sides, and the economies rely upon the border remaining open.Owner of the family business El Rincon Restaurant, Edgar Alaniz, called upon Newsom for action, "I want to make it clear that if he wants to understand the community more he needs to visit the community more."Though the meeting was hosted in San Ysidro, a news release made no mention of whether or not Newsom would visit the border. RELATED: Newsom's first actions target health care for young people in the country illegallyThe visit comes as the San Diego Rapid Response Network prepares to open a relief center for migrants. Earlier this year, Newsom allocated million for the response network. Also this year, the newly-elected governor proposed expanding Medi-Cal coverage to young people living in the country illegally. Newsom's budget said immigrants up to age 25 would potentially be eligible for the coverage. The budget proposed spending an additional 0 million for the Medi-Cal expansion. Outside the round-table discussion about a half dozen protesters held signs calling for Americans First, saying they believe the wall is necessary and concerned immigrants would take advantage of hand outs in the U.S.RELATED: Newsom outlines 0 million for Medi-Cal expansion to young illegal immigrants 2489

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) — Cameras caught a thief wreaking havoc at an East County business park, culminating in several destructive acts after he realized he was locked in.Scott Trafton has seen the video countless times, but his emotions have yet to lessen."Aggravating and makes me angry," said Trafton, who owns XP Builders.Just before midnight last Thursday night, a truck is seen driving into a business park on Wheatlands Court. The truck, believed to be a Chevy Silverado, is parked in the dark for more than four hours, before a man emerges and heads toward Trafton's general contractor business. In the video, the man grabs items from the truck bed, before prying open a toolbox in the back. A knife at this side, the man would get away with more than a thousand dollars with of Trafton's tools. "It hurts being a small business. Every penny counts," said Trafton.Trafton is not the only victim. The thief left behind a trail of shattered truck windows and missing items."Basically took whatever wasn't bolted down," said Trafton. When the man went to leave, he was met by a gate, locked by someone who had left earlier. The camera spies him apparently chaining his truck to the fence and pulling forward, but he can't get the fence down."He then came over to another truck and broke a window. He then took a moving blanket to protect his truck and drove to another fence," said Trafton. In the video, you can see the flash of his lights, before his final act."He ran into the fence, spread it wide open and knocked it over," said Trafton. The repair bill will tally some ,000. Trafton worries about what the thief may do next."He doesn't care about the aftermath, as long as he gets what he wants," said Trafton.Anyone with information is asked to call the Santee sheriff's substation at 619-956-4000. 1818

San Ysidro, CA (KGTV)- The border wait times to cross into the United States are significantly shorter Tuesday.According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection App, the wait times at the border in San Ysidro averaged around an hour depending on the time of day.In the last few days, border crossers reported waiting up to ten hours to cross into the U.S."A lot of people going to the border five, six hours before their work entry, it's been crazy," said Jose Montanez.Montanez is a married father of two. He lives in Tijuana, but crosses to work as a manager at a taco factory. He said the lines this weekend were especially bad, even in the pedestrian lanes."Four hours, five hours waiting in line, standing in line, you get tired," said Montanez.Last Friday, CBP began "adjusting operations" to focus on essential travel. The goal is to slow the spread of COVID-19.A spokesman with CBP sent 10News a statement, that reads in part:"According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a recent survey of more than 100,000 travelers on the southwest border found that the vast majority of cross-border travel by U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents is for purposes that are not deemed essential. To respond to the ongoing public health crisis and protect local southwest border communities, CBP is taking measures to discourage non-essential travel to and from Mexico to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the United States. "Fewer lanes and increased secondary inspections led to massive delays."If they have to ask more questions and isolate people from one another so the essential workers can go and cross faster, that would be perfect," said Montanez.Instead, innocent workers are feeling the impact the most."Those that are crossing right now are doing so cause they really need to and they're going to continue crossing," said Paola Avila, of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.Restrictions have been in place at the border since March. Avila said the new protocol now doesn't make sense, especially since San Diego County is off the state's COVID-19 monitoring list."Non-essential businesses are going to start reopening. More businesses are going to start reopening, so you're going to have a greater workforce that's going to have to facilitate those businesses reopening, but now you're going to have these restrictions. It's not in sync with the rest of our procedures and regulations and restrictions," said Avila. She worries the strategy could backfire and lead to more virus spread, especially for people using the pedestrian walkway."Now, you have large masses of people with no social distancing, you're creating an unsafe environment," said Avila.Montanez says he does his best to keep his distance while in line."You do, even though, you're close to each other, there's no space between the front and the back of you," said Montanez.Agency officials urge people to only travel to Mexico if it's necessary."We need people to think twice about non-essential travel and to ask themselves if the travel is worth risking their lives and the lives of others. Mexico continues to experience spikes in positive COVID-19 cases along the Southwest border and it is our duty to do everything we can to protect our nation, including educating citizens and even discouraging non-essential travel to Mexico." 3336
