CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Dozens of South Bay parents want to know why the principal at their neighborhood school was unceremoniously removed from her post right before the school closed for Fall Break. “I’m very frustrated,” said Greg Rogers Elementary PTA President Caroline Garvin. Garvin said she learned Friday that the Chula Vista Elementary School District reassigned Principal Erika Taylor.  A district spokesman said Taylor was reassigned as a Principal on Special Assignment in special education. Garvin said the Rogers faculty was told Friday towards the end of the school day. “The looks on the face of the staff:  There were people crying.  There were people that were upset because she was a true leader,” she said.  “To take that away from us without explanation and to do it before a break so that parents can’t even be here to help fight for her is just wrong to me.” All the schools in the Chula Vista Elementary School District are closed for the next two weeks for Fall Break. Garvin said there are a lot of parents upset about Taylor’s removal.  Garvin said she confronted CVESD Superintendent Dr. Francisco Escobedo. “He said he would not be able to give an explanation not now and not in the future,” she recalled. In the meantime, Garvin said Taylor has hired a lawyer to fight for her job back. “She’s got three kids.  She’s a single mom,” said Garvin. “I’m really proud of her.  I want her to fight this.” 1529

(KGTV) — A Chula Vista neighborhood is on alert after an encounter between three young boys and two men in an SUV.Aydyn Mays, 8, and his brother Jaycob, 7, were skateboarding with a friend along Glendora Drive Tuesday afternoon when they say a dark-colored SUV drove up with two men inside."They were about 30 years of age and one was wearing a bright safety vest," said Wendy Mays, the boys' mother.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodAydyn says the men asked them if they wanted an extra skateboard."They said, 'I have the same skateboard, but way much faster...Just get in the car, and I can take you to my house and I can show you the skateboard," said Aydyn.Aydyn says the men asked each of the boys and all said "No," but the men kept asking and insisting."It seemed like they wanted me to go inside the car," said Aydyn."They were trying to lie to us and steal us. I was scared," said Jaycob.Eventually, the boys ran off and straight to their homes and their moms."The boys came running into the home ... and said, 'Somebody tried to kidnap us!'" said Wendy Mays.Mays says soon after, the mom of the other boy was at her door."It was terrifying. Just made my heart fall into the pit of my stomach," said Mays.The boys' stories matched. Police were called, leading to a search, but the SUV was not found."I'm very proud of the boys getting away and coming to us. Chinese spacecraft Tiangong-1 is tumbling out of orbit above Earth, and is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere uncontrolled this weekend, the European Space Agency said. The spacecraft will re-enter Earth's atmosphere between Saturday morning and Monday morning. Tiangong-1 was at orbit roughly 200 miles above Earth after it launched in 2011. Slight atmospheric drag causes spacecrafts to decay in their altitude. As a result, spacecrafts have to conduct regular ‘reboost maneuvers’ to maintain their orbit, the European Space Agency said. Since December 2015, controllers on the ground have been unable to perform such maneuvers to keep it in orbit. Originally the plan was to control its re-entry to direct the craft into an unpopulated section of Earth. With no one able to control the spacecraft, it will tumble to the Earth somewhere between 43 degrees north and 43 south latitude. While that means much of the United States could be impacted by the falling spacecraft the size of a school bus, the European Space Agency projects that much, but not all, of the craft will break apart in the Earth's atmosphere. “Owing to the geometry of the station’s orbit, we can already exclude the possibility that any fragments will fall over any spot further north than 43oN or further south than 43oS,” says Holger Krag, Head of ESA’s Space Debris Office.The European Space Agency will be providing updates as it better projects when and where the spacecraft tumbles out of space and back to Earth.  1547

Chula Vista, CA (KGTV) - A Chula Vista City Council candidate running for District 4 says she is recovering after testing positive for COVID-19.Andrea Cardenas tells 10News she first started feeling symptoms on March 9th. She had a fever of 102, headaches, nausea and stomach pains. So, she called her doctor then went to seek medical care."When I went to Urgent Care, they asked me a few questions," she said. "They asked me if I had been in contact with someone who had tested positive and at the time I didn't know."She said because she is running for city council, she knew she was around many people on election night, but had no idea if anyone was carrying the coronavirus then."They had me do a chest x-ray where they accessed that I had pneumonia," she explained. "They said we could send you to the emergency room and have you tested but they explained the shortage of tests"She said her doctor explained that they were trying to hold the COVID-19 tests for the more vulnerable populations.Cardenas decided to just go home, self isolate, take the medication for pneumonia and hydrate."We have a social responsibility and a community responsibility to stay home," she said.Soon after, she was made aware that she had in fact been in contact with someone who contracted the coronavirus and she was tested immediately on the 16th.Her positive test results didn't come back until the 26th. "When I did test positive, I got a call from the county where they wanted to know my experience, all the symptoms that I had and where I had been," she said.Cardenas said she was fortunate to let the county officials know she had been home the entire time.She tells 10News has not left her home in 21 days and urges other who feel symptoms to immediately self-isolate and call their doctor."The moment that you feel any symptoms, just act as though you have it because it’s better to be safe than sorry," she said.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who have COVID-19 have mild symptoms and can recover at home without medical care.The County of San Diego urges people to call their doctor or 211 if they have symptoms. 2160

(KGTV) -- A Chula Vista woman's holiday decorations vanished from her lawn Thursday morning — but she's determined not to let "the Grinch" steal her Christmas spirit.It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Wendy Claproth's home in East Chula Vista. Since her husband's passing ten years ago, Claproth says she did not have the spirit to spread Christmas cheer outside. But this year, she finally got the courage to give it a shot.On her front lawn, she put up a large blowup Christmas tree snowman, hung lights along the roof, set up candy canes, wrapped her mailbox, and even created a Christmas tree with a set of lights. Her house screamed "festive." But on Thursday morning, she noticed that her brand new Christmas tree snowman inflatable was gone."Yes, you get mad, but more than anything, you get disappointed," Claproth said.It wasn't the wind, and it definitely was not an accident. Thieves had ripped the blowup right from her lawn, leaving only the stakes."It was kind of angled towards the corner all by itself over there, so I guess it was an easy prey," Claproth sighed.She wrote about the incident in her neighborhood app and found that she was not the only victim. Many others chimed in, saying the Grinch stole their Christmas decorations as well.Chula Vista Police says while there are not too many official reports of stolen decorations, these thefts, unfortunately, are common during the holiday season. But Claproth is not letting the thieves take away her holiday spirit."I ordered myself another one because they are not going to steal my Christmas cheer!" Claproth said. She plans to place it right where it was earlier in the week.She even has a message for the naughty thieves."I hope that you really needed it," Claproth said. "And if you needed it, then I guess it's OK. If they didn't need it, they might get some coal in their stocking this year!" she laughed.Chula Vista Police advises residents to mark their holiday decorations with their name or address and place them in view of lights or security cameras to prevent thefts. 2096
