OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — 79 years after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War Two, there are few survivors remaining. However, the memories of that day are crystal clear for 101-year-old Oceanside resident George Coburn.“One of the things I’ll always remember is the time I spent swimming after the Oklahoma turned over," Coburn said during an interview with ABC 10News. "I thought about a lot of things when I was in the water there.”Coburn was aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma on December 7th, 1941. He was working to prepare for a major inspection that was scheduled for the following day. Rumors began circulating belowdecks that the base was under attack. The rumor was confirmed just a few minutes later. "“I still remember the announcement. It was was rather unique. 'Real planes. Real bombs. No [expletive]'The Oklahoma took several hits from Japanese torpedoes. As the battleship began to sink, hundreds of sailors were trapped, including Coburn. He managed to wedge himself out through a porthole. "If I had been a little bit bigger, it would have been a hell of a tough job.”Coburn plummeted several feet into the water below. He found himself surrounded by burning shrapnel. However, he says the most terrifying danger was the continuous fire from Japanese fighters. “I could see the little geysers of machine gun bullets hitting the water.”After a few minutes in the water, Coburn managed to find the rope tying the Oklahoma to the neighboring USS Maryland. He climbed the rope aboard the Maryland and survived the remainder of the attack.Coburn went on to serve in many of the biggest naval actions of the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being struck by several pieces of shrapnel during the Battle of Okinawa. Do to a Navy paperwork error, Coburn was never given eight other medals from his service. He finally received the medals in 2019, after a campaign by a Palomar College historian and the intervention of Congressman Mike Levin. Coburn said it did not bother him that it took so long. “I knew what I’d done and where I’d been. The medals didn’t change that a particle.” 2158

A hodge-podge of beloved characters and settings would hardly fit in the same sentence if not for the fact they're all coming to Disney parks or cruise ships within the next few years.Disney Parks chairman Bob Chapek announced the new attractions over the weekend at the company's D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.The first Mary Poppins attraction at a Disney park is headed to Epcot as part of the transformation of the Florida park. Appropriately, the Cherry Tree Lane neighborhood will be housed in the United Kingdom pavilion in World Showcase.Other changes are afoot in Epcot's World Showcase, the area around a lagoon that shows off pavilions from almost a dozen nations.Next year, the French pavilion is adding a new attraction based on the animated film "Ratatouille," as well as a new French restaurant. The French pavilion also will host a sing-along with songs from the film, "Beauty and the Beast" starting next January.Both the Canada and China pavilions are getting new movies showcasing their countries, and Disney officials said a new nighttime extravaganza will offer various interpretations of classic Disney songs from people all over the world.In other parts of Epcot, a "Guardians of the Galaxy" ride is planned, as well as a new restaurant at the Mission: Space pavilion.Elsewhere in Disney's "park-dom," ''Avenger Campus" areas are planned for Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris, based on "The Avengers" movie franchise. Officials with the Texas Animal Health Commission say a 2-year-old dog in Texas is the first animal in the state to be infected with the virus that causes the coronavirus in humans.In a news release, the officials with the health commission said the Tarrant County dog was tested by a veterinary as a precaution after its owners had the virus.“Based on current knowledge, there is no evidence that pets play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to people,” said Dr. Andy Schwartz, State Veterinarian in the release. “It’s always important to restrict contact with your pets and other animals, just like you would other people if you are infected with COVID-19 in order to protect them from infection.”The veterinary says the dog is healthy.There are now 12 other animals in the United States that have tested positive for the virus, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.Officials say routine testing of animals is not recommended at this time. 1011

Ohio State University placed its head football coach, Urban Meyer, on paid administrative leave on Wednesday as it investigates whether he was aware of domestic violence allegations against fired assistant coach Zach Smith."The university is conducting an investigation into these allegations," Ohio State said. Ryan Day, who has been the team's offensive coordinator, will be acting head football coach while Meyer is on leave."We are focused on supporting our players and on getting to the truth as expeditiously as possible," the university said.Meyer said in a statement that he and Gene Smith, Ohio State's athletic director, "agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion. This allows the team to conduct training camp with minimal distraction. I eagerly look forward to the resolution of this matter."At issue is whether Meyer knew about domestic violence allegations against Zach Smith made by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. Not only do Florida investigators say Daniel Santos was ripping hundreds of people off, but they say he flaunted it on social media.“He holds stacks of cash, firearms. And he’s not scared to show you the lifestyle that he’s living using other people’s hard earned money,” said Pasco Detective Spencer Hubbell.Hubbell has a whole file cabinet dedicated to catching Santos. He’s been arrested 55 times just in Pasco County, Florida.And he’s says this latest arrest should finally stick.Investigators said Santos was running a fraud operation, using stolen debit and credit cards, and bogus checks to bring in millions of dollars.“It’s feasible he was doing between ,000 to ,000 a day at times,” Hubbell said.Detectives said Santos, a suspected members of the Bloods gang, would raid accounts until the bank realized what was happening.In most cases, those banks would take the loss and the customers didn’t actually lose any money.US Marshall’s arrested Santos in Miami where he was living in a luxury condo.“Mr. Santos has never had a job. He’s never paid taxes. But he’s living the high life on everybody else's dime,” he said.Along with the fraud, investigators said Santos has a violent criminal history including sexual battery on a victim under 16, and trying to run down a police officer during a traffic stop.They said he was always able to bond out and go back to his criminal behavior. “He’s treating it as a game.
