Nine-year-old Nariya White loves to concoct slime and make lip gloss. She's an aspiring scientist and an expert at turning simple ingredients into original products. So when she was bullied this past school year, she turned that experience into something positive.“Two girls were bullying me, and I just decided I should make a book about bullying," said White.In March, she wrote a book called "A Slimetastic Day." It was recently published and is available on Amazon.The book is about "encouragement." When two boys call girls dumb, the girls initially become discouraged, but then the girls challenge the boys to slime making competition. The girls use their creativity and knowledge to prevail. White hopes her book inspires other children.“The book was about bullying, so if someone in your school or on the street is bullying you, you shouldn’t really care about it because you have your family, cousins, and friends that care about you," White said.White's mother Kina knew the book would be a bestseller with family and friends but said she didn't expect all the praise they've received from strangers. NEW YORK CITY — The co-owner of a Staten Island bar that continues to flout local coronavirus restrictions was arrested again early Sunday morning after allegedly hitting a sheriff's deputy with his vehicle, officials said.After a night of surveillance at Mac's Public House, two uniformed deputy sheriffs approached Daniel Presti, 34, just after midnight to place him under arrest, but he ran from the officers, got into his vehicle and began to drive away, according to the sheriff's office.Presti allegedly drove into one of the uniformed deputies, officials said. The deputy was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle and Presti reportedly continued to drive down South Railroad Avenue with the injured deputy still clinging to the hood of the car.,Presti drove about 100 yards before stopping his vehicle, officials said. He was arrested and taken to a police precinct, where he is expected to be charged.The deputy sheriff who was struck by the vehicle was taken to Staten Island University Hospital for treatment, officials said.The car crash was the latest incident surrounding the controversial Staten Island bar — which has garnered national attention and was even spoofed on Saturday Night Live over the weekend.Presti was also taken into custody by deputy sheriffs on Tuesday after an investigation revealed the bar was offering indoor dining and defying several other coronavirus restrictions despite rising infection rates in the area. Staten Island has the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in New York.Bars and restaurants in state-designated "orange" microcluster zones are only allowed to offer takeout and outdoor dining, with a four-person maximum per table.Despite Presti's initial arrest and the loss of the the bar's liquor license, Mac's Public House opened its doors to indoor diners again this weekend, according to the sheriff's office.On Saturday night, deputy sheriffs reported witnessing dozens of people entering and exiting a neighboring commercial space to access the back door of the bar.According to the sheriff's office, food and alcohol were being served to unmasked and standing patrons in exchange for "monetary donations."Following Presti's arrest Saturday night, Mac's Public House said on Facebook that the restaurant would remain open."We will not back down! NEW ORLEANS — A Black man whose life sentence for stealing hedge clippers in a home burglary drew scathing criticism from the chief justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court has been granted parole. Louisiana's high court had denied release for 63-year-old Fair Wayne Bryant earlier this year for the 1997 burglary that netted him a set of hedge clippers. In dissent, Chief Justice Bernette Johnson said the habitual offender law under which Bryant was sentenced was a “modern manifestation” of Jim Crow era laws aimed at jailing Black people for simple crime. Conditions of Bryant's parole include mandatory attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and community service. 678

Nearly two dozen schools in metro Detroit were closed on Thursday due to threats. Detroit Police Chief James Craig said since the Florida school shooting on Feb. 14, DPD received a total of 40 threats, consisting of two bombing threats, 34 shooting threats, and two bombing and shooting threats.At one of the targeted schools, John R. King Academy, class was already in session when the bomb squad arrived at the school on the report of a suspicious package. The kids were dismissed for the day after it was found to be safe.Anyone arrested could potentially face charges of terrorism and making threats online. If convicted, those charges carry a 20-year penalty.Craig said in the last 24 hours, DPD has received 23 threats. Three juveniles and one adult have already been arrested for numerous threats. Craig says more people will be in custody soon."It's going to end," he said.
