XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Second World Investment Forum (WIF), seeking to offer insights on the balance between investment and sustainable development, opened Tuesday in Xiamen, in southeast China's Fujian Province.With the theme "Investment for Sustainable Development," the forum is organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and has attracted more than 1,500 overseas investors, policymakers and international organization representatives."International investment is high on the agenda of global policy-making," United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said in a video message to the forum.Despite the recovery of worldwide capital flows since the downturn in 2009, Ban said, the recovery remained fragile and the consequences of climate change were "increasingly clear.""We must work together to advance responsible investment and corporate sustainability," said Ban.He urged governments and businesses to make investments that better stimulated economic activity while promoting energy efficiency and green technology.He stressed the critical role of private investment in the spread of environment friendly practices and in reaching the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).Established in 2000, the MDGs are eight development goals to be achieved by 2015. Agreed to by UN member states, the goals include time-bound targets for reducing extreme poverty and child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics, promoting gender equality, education and environmental sustainability.The forum participants include World Trade Organization Director-General Pascal Lamy and senior officials from many countries.The high-profile list "demonstrates the importance that international investment has gained as an engine of growth and development," UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi said at the opening ceremony.The four-day forum would examine the challenges and opportunities for global investment in the post-crisis economy.He urged "a new generation of investment policies" to promote a transformation towards a low carbon economy.The forum also features presentations from countries showcasing climate change-related investment projects.Energy and drilling companies and engineering firms from Iceland will also attend the event to contribute their experience on the use of clean energy."The abundance of clean energy is the main reason why Iceland is... an attractive investment location for foreign companies," said Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland.Iceland had based all its electricity production and space heating on clean energy.However, Grimsson recalled that before the 1970s, more than 80 percent of energy in Iceland came from imported coal and oil."The climate crisis is primarily a call for a fundamental energy revolution, a comprehensive transformation from fossil fuel to green energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, hydro and biomass sources," he said.Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony.The three-day forum will include conferences on the impact of investment on sustainable development; how stock exchanges can promote sustainable business practices; and the need for a recognized set of principles for borrowers and lenders that promotes sustainable debt and credit conditions.Also included is a ministerial round table that will address investment policy coherence in the post-crisis environment.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China shut down 1,355 small coal mines with a total production capacity of 125.19 million tonnes by the end of September as part of efforts to restructure its mining industry, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said Thursday.The latest figures indicate that the NEA had surpassed its annual target of eliminating 121.67 million tonnes of outdated production capacity this year.According to the NEA, 1,539 small and dangerous coal mines with 121.67 million tonnes of outdated capacity had to be closed in China this year to meet the country's requirement for preventing deadly accidents and reducing carbon dioxide emissions and pollution.The energy watchdog also said it would strengthen inspection on small coal mines for the rest of the year and ensure that the mining restructuring plan be completed as scheduled this year.China has long relied on coal to fuel its rapid economic growth. About three-fourths of its electricity is generated from coal-fired power stations, according to the NEA.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Central banks should provide incentive mechanisms for banks to extend more loans to support the real economy, Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), or the central bank, said Thursday.Speaking at a forum in Beijing sponsored by Oxford University and the China Development Research Foundation, Zhou reviewed the worldwide central banks' role in helping grapple with the financial crisis, pointing out that zero interest rate policies adopted in many countries could discourage banks from extending lending.He said, however, that a central bank should maintain a certain interest rate margin, which will help banks to recover from damages brought by the global credit crunch and strengthen their abilities to extend loans.

HANOI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A trade fair was held in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi on Saturday with participation of companies from Vietnam and China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.At the fair, more than 100 companies from China's Guangxi brought here nearly 200 projects in various sectors including resources development, agriculture products processing, agricultural machinery production, sugar production and high technology.Ma Biao, chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said at the fair that Guangxi and Vietnam have seen strengthened trade and economic links in recent years.Vietnam has been Guangxi's largest trade partner for eleven years, said Ma. THATTA, Pakistan, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Sunday visited a mobile hospital set up by a Chinese search and rescue team in south Pakistan's Thatta, commending China's relief efforts for flood victims.The 55-member Chinese rescue team have set up tents and a mobile hospital at Thatta police headquarters late Saturday to provide medical services to the flood victims after they arrived at the district, about 100 km northeast of Karachi, Sindh Province.Thatta is now the worst flood-hit district where hundreds of thousands of people have been affected. China is the first foreign country to have sent a relief team to this region."They are working for humanity of the people who are suffering water-borne diseases...That is what we require now," Malik told Xinhua with reference to the team members who are mostly experienced doctors and nurses."They have very good medical facilities and good doctors. I think that is the best China could do," Malik said."China is always the truest and good friend (of Pakistan), and I always say 'Long live the Pakistan-China friendship'," he said.China has provided a total of 120 million yuan (17.7 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies to Pakistan in three batches.
