Since the spread of COVID-19 came to the United States, the Red Cross has seen over 6,000 canceled blood drives -- amounting to around 200,000 fewer blood donations from schools, offices, churches, and other establishments. Those cancellations could cause a blood shortage at hospitals nationwide.“It helps everybody in the population. I’ve personally had people that needed a blood transfusion,” Amanda Smith said, sitting outside her local blood donation center in the waiting room.Smith heeded the call to donate blood, despite the COVID-19 pandemic affecting countries across the world.“It’s incumbent on us to ensure that we can supply hospitals before that individual patient need come up,” Liz Lambert with Vitalant, a blood donation collection nonprofit, said. Vitalant supplies hospitals across the U.S., and because of the virus, they’ve seen a drop in donors.“We’ve seen a lot of schools and businesses that are starting to work remotely or cancel classes, therefore we’ve had a lot of blood drives that have canceled in the coming days and weeks as well,” she added. The need for blood donations continue amid the spread of COVID-19.“Even in a time of crisis, someone will still need a blood transfusion whether it’s somebody who’s been in a car accident, an accidental injury, a broken bone, anything,” Smith said.To ease fears among donors about contracting the coronavirus, blood donation agencies are using social distancing practices at their sites.“Social distancing is happening here at blood drives in what we call time and space. We are asking that people who are coming out to our blood drives to schedule an appointment. This helps us break up the timing of our donors,” Jessica Merrill, the Director for Biomed Communications with American Red Cross, said.“That represents about 80 percent of our blood donations,” Merrill said. “So that has a severe impact on our ability to collect blood and make it available for patients in need.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on March 19 that the organization still encourages donating blood -- with recommendations that donor chairs be placed six feet apart and cleaned often, and appointments be made to manage flow.“Blood donation facilities are staying open similar to your grocery store and your pharmacy and other places that we are depending on to keep life going right now,” Merrill said.“We are encouraging people to come and donate if they are healthy and if they meet all the eligibility requirements,” Lambert said.As people hunker down to prevent the spread of COVID-19, donation centers are looking to keep the donations coming in, to properly supply hospitals to meet their needs.“Normally we encourage walk-ins but in this situation we’re really stressing appointments to make sure that we can make sure there’s a spot for someone and they’re not having to wait,” Lambert said.“We need them to keep that urgency for weeks to come and continue to come out throughout this pandemic,” Merrill said.According to the Red Cross, to give blood, donors must be in good health and feeling well, be at least age 16, and weigh at least 110 pounds, depending on height. Those who donate will be asked to produce an ID, and be asked several medical questions. The whole process takes 10-15 minutes, the Red Cross said.“It doesn’t really hurt at all and it doesn’t take that much time,” Pam Lacey said as she made her way out after donating.Vitalant donation locations/schedule an appointment: 3497

RIVIERA BEACH, Florida — The FBI said a 59-year-old U.S. Army veteran shot and wounded a doctor Wednesday evening just before a mental health evaluation at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Riviera Beach. The shooting happened at approximately 6:20 p.m. local time at the hospital.According to the FBI, 59-year-old double-amputee Larry Ray Bon pulled out a small handgun and opened fire inside the emergency area, striking at least two people. One person was grazed by the bullet, and a doctor was shot in the neck while trying to subdue the shooter. "In between shots, the doctor saw an opportunity to jump on the subject and disarm him. While doing so, he sustained a gunshot wound to his neck, so pretty heroic," said FBI Special Agent Justin Fleck. The doctor, whose name has not been released, was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center. The doctor was treated and later released. The shooter, who officials said is originally from Michigan, has been recently living in the West Palm Beach area. Officials believe Bon may be homeless. The FBI said Bon served in the U.S. Army for a very short period of time, but this incident is not believed to be combat-related. The FBI did not release any information concerning the security measures of the hospital. "He has a criminal history and has had frequent contacts with local police departments," said Fleck. The hospital will remain operational for scheduled appointments and procedures on Thursday.Riviera Beach Police assisted the VA police force. The VA Office of the Inspector General is also helping with the investigation. 1597

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team has expressed reluctance to him testifying publicly in front of the House Judiciary Committee, according to sources familiar with the matter. The special counsel's team has expressed the notion that Mueller does not want to appear political after staying behind the scenes for two years and not speaking as he conducted his investigation into President Donald Trump. One option is to have him testify behind closed doors, but sources caution numerous options are being considered in the negotiations between the committee and the special counsel's team.Justice officials are generally supportive of how the special counsel's team is proceeding with negotiations. As Attorney General Bill Barr told The Wall Street Journal last week: "It's Bob's call whether he wants to testify."Special counsel spokesman Peter Carr and the Justice Department declined to comment on the current status of negotiations.House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, has repeatedly said that Mueller must appear publicly, and he will subpoena Mueller if necessary."Eventually we will hear from Mueller because ... we will subpoena him if we have to," Nadler told CNN earlier this month. "I certainly hope it doesn't come to the, to our necessity to subpoena him," he added.Rep. Doug Collins, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, suggested at Tuesday's hearing, a meeting where former White House counsel Don McGahn did not appear after being subpoenaed, that Democrats appeared to have a lack of urgency scheduling Mueller's testimony."We've subpoenaed the documents, we've subpoenaed the underlying documents, we've subpoenaed stuff that we can't get, but the one thing that we seem to avoid is Mr. Mueller himself, the one who wrote it," Collins said. "We've asked since April about Mr. Mueller coming. But every time we seem to get close to Mueller, Mueller just gets pushed on a little bit. Haven't seen a subpoena here, and this is what's really amazing -- we'll get back to subpoenas in a moment -- but just think about that. You wanted the work of the author, but you don't want to talk to the author."After the hearing, Collins would not say whether he'd support a subpoena for Mueller's testimony.Separately, Nadler told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Monday he doesn't know what's keeping Mueller as an employee of the Justice Department, suggesting he was "more subject to their discipline" than he would be as a private citizen. "The report is finished. I don't know why he is still there," Nadler said.Mueller has been seen arriving for work almost every morning since the report was released in April. The Justice Department has not commented on what work still remains. 2726
