SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fired a pellet gun at Navy SEAL instructors and trainees conducting a nighttime training exercise near Liberty Station was sentenced on Thursday to a year in jail.Scott Douglass Weaver, 48, pleaded guilty last month to making an attempted threat on a witness and brandishing a replica firearm.Because of credit for time already served, Weaver will spend about 80 more days in local custody before being released, authorities said.Dispatchers received a report of a man shooting at Navy officers shortly before 10:45 p.m. on July 23 in the 2500 block of Laning Road and Weaver was arrested. No military personnel were injured, according to the Navy.Police did not say if Weaver had a motive for firing at the SEALs or if he was even aware of who he was shooting at.In light of the shooting, the Naval Special Warfare Command said it would evaluate its training procedures. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was behind bars Wednesday in connection with a mugging that left a 73-year-old disabled woman gravely injured last week on a downtown roadside near Cortez Hill.Stanley Harris Hinton, 31, was arrested Monday on suspicion of carrying out the robbery and assault in the Core-Columbia district of San Diego, according to police.The 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound suspect allegedly attacked Nannette Altevers, who uses a walker, near the corner of B Street and Fourth Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.Patrol officers responding to a 911 call about the assault found the assailant gone and Altevers suffering from extensive upper body trauma, Lt. Matt Dobbs said. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, homicide detectives have taken charge of the case, the lieutenant said.Hinton was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, robbery and elder abuse. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - At least one person was seriously injured this morning in a crash that may have involved an alcohol-impaired driver, the California Highway Patrol said.A car reportedly rolled over and caught fire about 3:44 a.m. on southbound state Route 15 near state Route 94, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log. Moments later, dispatchers were told the car appeared to have exploded.The fire-damaged car was then struck by another car, according to the incident log. A third vehicle was also involved in the crash, though details were scant.At least one person was left with serious injuries. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A shooting near Willie Henderson Sports Complex left a man wounded Friday.The 40-year-old victim was sitting in his vehicle in the 900 block of South 45th Street in Mountain View shortly before noon when a "large" man approached and shot him several times in the upper body, then ran off, according to San Diego police.Medics took the victim to a hospital for treatment of non-life- threatening wounds, Officer Tony Martinez said.It was unclear if the two men knew each other, and the motive for the shooting was unknown. 547
