SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Embattled Rep. Duncan Hunter criticized Navy officials Monday for their plans to possibly remove a Navy SEAL acquitted of murder charges from the service against the wishes of President Donald Trump. Hunter commented Monday outside San Diego federal court regarding the Navy's handling of the war crimes case of Navy SEAL Chief Edward Gallagher, who was acquitted by a military jury this summer of stabbing a wounded teenage ISIS fighter to death in Mosul, Iraq, as well as other charges of attempting to kill unarmed Iraqi civilians. Hunter discussed the Gallagher case for about five minutes with reporters, but did not comment regarding his ongoing campaign fraud case, in which he's accused of misusing 0,000 in campaign funds for personal use. Hunter was indicted along with his wife on five dozen criminal counts, including wire fraud, conspiracy, and falsification of records. On Nov. 15, Trump restored Gallagher's rank, but Navy officials said days later that a ``trident review'' would go forward regarding whether Gallagher would remain a member of the SEALs. Hunter, who has supported Gallagher throughout his court martial and news of the trident review, said ``The military will never admit that it's wrong on anything even when it obviously is,'' calling the Gallagher case an example of ``prosecutorial and bureaucratic abuse from within the military system.'' Hunter, who told reporters he's been in contact with Gallagher, said ``What the Navy was going to do was purely punitive, just to slap (Gallagher) in the face one last time before he retired.'' Hunter also criticized the Navy for ignoring Trump's authority as commander in chief. ``When the president says that Eddie Gallagher will retire with his trident with all the honors that he's earned in the Navy, that sends a pretty clear message that no retaliatory act by the Navy against Chief Gallagher is going to be accepted by the president,'' Hunter said. ``In this case, President Trump is the Secretary of the Navy's boss. He's everybody in the military's boss. So when he says something, whether he tweets it or not, or says it in a certain way or not, just because it's not written in the perfect bureaucratic order or way that we're used to from other people, doesn't mean that he doesn't mean what he says.'' On Sunday, Trump tweeted that he was ``not pleased with the way that Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher's trial was handled by the Navy,'' and said that Gallagher would retire with his Trident Pin. Navy Secretary Richard Spencer was fired Sunday, with the Gallagher case cited in a statement from the Pentagon as the central factor in Spencer's removal. DOD spokesman Jonathan Hoffman wrote that Secretary of Defense Mark Esper asked for Spencer's resignation after Spencer privately proposed to the White House to restore Gallagher's rank, despite his opposing public stance on the issue. In a resignation letter dated this Sunday, Spencer does not reference Gallagher specifically, but states that issues with Trump played a role. ``Unfortunately it has become apparent that in this respect, I no longer share the same understanding with the Commander in Chief who appointed me, in regards to the key principle of good order and discipline,'' he wrote. ``I cannot in good conscience obey an order that I believe violates the sacred oath I took in the presence of my family, my flag and my faith to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man charged with murder and arson for allegedly setting a fire that killed his parents and sister at the family's Logan Heights home had previously made statements about burning the house down and set fires around the home on several prior occasions, according to preliminary hearing testimony today.Wilber Romero, 27, is accused of setting the Oct. 13, 2019, blaze that sparked at around 4:30 a.m. and killed the defendant's father, Jose Antonio Romero, 44; his mother, Nicalasa ``Nico'' Maya-Romero, 46, and his sister, Iris Romero, 21.The defendant's father was found dead inside the home at 3114 Clay Ave., while his mother and sister died at a hospital. Romero's then-24-year-old sister, Wendy, and his then-17-year-old brother, Angel, were injured in the fire. Bystanders pulled Wendy out of the home, while Angel escaped through a window.The preliminary hearing will determine whether Romero will stand trial for charges that could have him facing life imprisonment if convicted. The hearing will resume Thursday with additional testimony. Romero remains in custody without bail.Police witnesses testified Wednesday that the surviving family members told investigators that Wilber had a history of setting fire to portions of the home or objects surrounding the residence.Angel Romero told a San Diego police investigator that Wilber set fire to the house's roof a few weeks prior to the fatal blaze, and had set fires around the house on about a dozen prior occasions, according to Detective James Barrera of the San Diego Police Department. Angel also allegedly told Barrera that his brother had previously talked about ``burning the house down and burning everybody in it.''Wendy Romero told SDPD Detective Marco Perez that Wilber had previously set fire to plants and a trash can, and also burned his clothes in a barbecue on one occasion. During the blaze, Wendy said she saw Wilber outside the home running back and forth in the street yelling at her to open the door. She told Perez that she screamed for him to help her and he ``ignored her'' and ran down the street toward a nearby park.Prosecutors say that during the fire, Wilber Romero slipped out of a side door with the family dog and escaped the fire unharmed. He was detained near the scene.Detective Gary Phillips testified that a lighter was found on the defendant on Oct. 13, and that Romero was unscathed, without any burns or soot on his clothing or body. Romero was not booked into custody on suspicion of murder until Oct. 18.Prior to his arrest, Romero appeared in local television news interviews denying any involvement with the fire and stating he tried to save his family, but was forced to save himself.Regarding allegations of his involvement, he said in one interview, ``You can lock me up, but you're not going to take me in to say this, `I did it.' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - City officials broke ground Monday on the Bay Terraces Senior Center, a project that local residents have advocated for since the 1990s. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Cate were on hand to mark the beginning of construction on the 3,400-square-foot facility. Once completed, the million senior center is set to include amenities such as a multipurpose room and a commercial kitchen. The facility will serve seniors in Paradise Hills, Bay Terraces and Skyline, according to the city. ``A decade ago, city leaders laid down a thin layer of gravel in preparation for a senior center in southeastern San Diego that was promised but never delivered,'' Faulconer said. ``Today we are making good on that promise and building a center that will be as great as the communities it will serve.'' Faulconer revived the project in 2016 and city officials expect it to be the city's first building to produce as much energy as it uses by leveraging solar panels on the facility's roof. According to the city, the project is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant program. ``This project illustrates the hard work and power of our community to organize and hold elected officials accountable,'' Montgomery said. ``We are pleased to see the Bay Terraces Senior Center start construction and we look forward to the grand opening and visiting the center for many years to come.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A stabbing at a College Area bus stop left a man badly injured Friday, authorities reported.The 50-year-old victim was waiting for a bus in the 6900 block of El Cajon Boulevard when the assailant approached and began arguing with him shortly before 11:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.The quarrel ended when the stranger pulled a knife and stabbed the other man in the arm, then fled on foot, Officer Tony Martinez said.Patrol personnel applied a tourniquet to the victim's bleeding arm and performed CPR on him prior to the arrival of paramedics, who took him to a hospital for treatment of serious but apparently non-life-threatening trauma.Witnesses reported that the assailant -- described as a heavyset, heavily tattooed man in his 20s or 30s, wearing a red shirt and black bandana- style mask -- left the area eastbound and appeared to enter a nearby motel, police said.
