There's a new push to acknowledge the greater impact of racism on health.Three Democratic lawmakers created the Anti-Racism and Public Health Act, which would create two new programs within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).One is a National Center for Anti-Racism to research health disparities and develop policies to close the divide. The other is a new program within the CDC’s Center for Injury Prevention and Control that would be focused on preventing law enforcement violence.The bill also calls on the federal government to declare racism a public health crisis. Meanwhile, many state and local governments have already done that.The American Public Health Association says federal action would identify racism as an issue of national importance.“I think the goal is to get us to take our heads of the sand and not be afraid to call racism for what it is,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, Executive Director at the American Public Health Association.Benjamin says the pandemic has shown the extent of racism as a health issue, pointing to matters that prevent people of color from getting tested and the apprehension Black men face when it comes to putting on a mask, because it can be seen as threatening.He says the stress can raise blood pressure and cause health issues.“If you actually go in and understand their life experiences, they have higher degrees of stress,” said Benjamin. “Stress, it changes a whole range of bodily hormones that have negative impacts on the body.”The American Public Health Association declared systemic racism a public health crisis in June, shortly after George Floyd’s death.A U.S. Senate version of the bill has been referred to committee. 1708

This week, more than 150 people, including author J.K. Rowling and other academics, journalists and writers, signed on to an open letter published in Harper’s Magazine calling for an end to the so-called cancel culture.The piece, “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate” argues that being quick to cancel someone or something could lead to a silencing of viewpoints and less reforms.“The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted. While we have come to expect this on the radical right, censoriousness is also spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty,” the letter reads.The letter is in response to a growing trend of canceling people and entities over past or present statements.What is cancel culture? It refers to removing support for a public figure or leader in response to that person’s objectionable behavior or opinions. Removing support can include boycotts, canceling appearances or performances, refusing to promote that person’s work, etc.The phrase cancel culture has come into being the last few years to talk about actions being taken during movements like #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter and other social justice conversations that are demanding greater accountability from public figures and a reckoning with their past comments or behaviors. Tofu, the red panda — a recent addition at?Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium — died Tuesday, according to a press release from the zoo today.The preliminary pathology report indicated that the 3-year-old red panda, which arrived in Omaha from the Detroit Zoo in October 2017 and joined the new Asian Highlands exhibit in May, likely died of a condition that is known to afflict the species, according to the release.Tofo had excess fluid in her abdomen and chest cavity, "a finding that is most commonly observed in cases of heart failure or cardiomyopathy... (which) are population-wide health issues within the red panda species," the release states.The red panda could have also died of inflammation of the heart from bacterial or viral causes, the release states.According to the release, the Omaha zoo "intends to collaborate with other pathologists and scientists regarding their findings in hopes to better understand these health issues."The zoo still exhibits two red pandas: one female and one male, the release states. 1054

Camberos asked. "How are we going to get to the homes? I mean, you see all this destruction and devastation."Oregon mailed ballots to addresses as clean-up continued, creating potential challenges for those now without homes or mailboxes, like Erica Ramirez."To me, it was worth a lot," Ramirez said of her home of 13 years that burned into a pile of metal.The state provided a website to help answer questions for voters displaced by the flames.The fire has taken so much, but not her right as an American citizen to vote in her first presidential election."I am going to vote until God gives me life and strength to do so," she said.Ramirez had her ballot sent to a temporary address, which is legal in Oregon, a process helping many voters who are unsure of where they will live next.For Camberos, as an organizer with Unite Oregon, her focus is on making sure this area’s large Latino population is heard. She says many Latino voters will be casting ballots for the first time. She posted voter information fliers across the area in both English and Spanish."It's important to connect with my community and to say, ‘We are fighting for our lives right now. We need to make change,’” she said.Change is on the minds of many impacted by the fire.“I personally believe in climate change, said Ramon De La Cruz, who lost his home of 16 years in the fire."It was very difficult seeing all of this.”His story is of the kind of loss that is now all too common across the West, but amid the rubble and pain is hope some of the worst wildfires in U.S. history won’t stop Americans here from using their power to write the next chapter."These are issues that are going to affect you, or maybe not even you, but maybe your children or the next generation," Camberos said. 2656

TORREY PINES (KGTV) - Two paragliders, one from San Diego and one from Orange County, died after colliding in mid-air and crashing into a cliff Saturday afternoon.It happened near Torrey Pines Gliderport around 2:45 p.m. Police confirmed both paragliders were men. One of the men was 61-years-old and the other man was 43-years-old, officials said. Both of the men were certified .Witnesses sat stunned when they watched the paragliders become intertwined, "I initially heard the collapse of the chute... I heard a collision, and some kind of sound, and looked over and saw two people falling from the sky," Madeline Henderson said."It was spinning but it was like in slow motion and I could see the guy, I don't know what he was trying to do but I felt bad for them," Irene Marquez said from the passenger seat of a car. She said it was her first time at the Gliderport and was traumatized by what she saw.Rescuers have recovered both of the bodies.Witnesses say the paragliders collided mid-air, a chute collapsed, and they spiraled to the ground and hit the cliffs. 1076
