WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a Thursday morning phone interview, President Donald Trump attacked Sen. Kamala Harris, repeatedly calling her a "monster." He also called her a "communist," which she is not.Trump went after the Democratic vice-presidential nominee after telling Fox Business that he wouldn’t participate in next week’s presidential debate if it’s virtual, Trump said he thought Harris performed terribly in Wednesday night’s debate with Vice President Mike Pence.“She was terrible, she was, uh, I don’t think you could get worse, and totally unlikeable, and she is,” Trump claimed. “She’s a communist. WASHINGTON, D.C. – It’s been a strange time everywhere, with COVID-19 upending how people normally live.That includes college students, many of whom are now in a hybrid form of learning, with some on campus and some on a computer at home, like Gregory Carnesi.“Something that I've been experiencing myself, something that I've heard my peers experiencing, is just this feeling of being overwhelmed because everything is online now,” Carnesi said.Carnesi goes to Arizona State University, just one of the campuses in the U.S. where the nonprofit and mental health organization “Active Minds” recently surveyed several thousand college students, to see how they are faring in the time of COVID-19.Here’s what they found:- 1 in 4 students said their depression had “significantly increased” since the start of the pandemic- 89% of the students surveyed said they’re experiencing stress or anxiety- 56% said their daily activity had decreased or significantly decreased.“We have to remind people, ‘you know, you used to walk three miles a day to and from class, or you used to be out on the field running around for soccer practice and you're not doing that right now.’ So how else can you fill that gap and that void for yourself?” said Alison Malmon, founder and executive director of Active Minds.Malmon said it’s also important for colleges and universities to tailor student access to mental health services, since so many are no longer on campus as much.“We are still needing to promote access and we are still needing to give people the supports that they need in the way that they are able to reach them,” Malmon said.Yet, there were some positive findings in the survey.- Nearly two-thirds of students, 66%, said they have been helping support others with their mental health- 77% of those surveyed said they feel optimistic about the futureGregory Carnesi said he is just taking it one day at a time.“I really kind of think the best thing that's worked for me is just having grace and mercy with myself,” he said, “and just doing your best day to day. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Since the start of his presidency, President Donald Trump and his administration have talked about getting manufacturing companies to come back to the United States, a process known as reshoring.Now, with unemployment at a historic high, another 1.5 million people filing jobless claims last week and still 19.5 million continued claims or people unemployed, the idea of reshoring is being revisited by Congress.Some on Capitol Hill are proposing reshoring incentives for companies in the next stimulus package.“There are a lot of potential ways that the administration and Congress could come up with tax subsidies and tax breaks for companies that produces here,” said Ed Yardeni, an economist and the president of Yardeni Research.While believes there could be some jobs created by companies reshoring in the U.S., it’s hard to say how many. That’s partly because, many companies that would consider reshoring would also consider using artificial intelligence at their production plants.“Clearly bringing back jobs would be great, but I don’t think we go back to the 70s and 80s, where we had a lot more people employed,” Yardeni added. “I would think that if you are reshoring and bring production back to the U.S., you are going to use state of the art technology to do that, so I’m not sure it is going to be a huge win-win in terms of jobs.”Experts, including Yardeni, believe companies that would most likely consider reshoring would be those in the pharmaceutical and technology sector. Their reason for the move is likely less for job creation and more because of national security concerns.Either way, the way to get more jobs out of reshoring may be by doing more than just incentivizing companies to come back to the U.S.“Maybe what we need is to combine reshoring with really focusing on reeducating a lot of the labor force so that they can manage the robots, build the robots, program the robots, as opposed to doing the job the robots are doing,” said Yardeni. 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The backbone of the American election system rides on the shoulders of an army of paid volunteers: poll workers, who take time out of their lives to spend Election Day helping others have their say at the ballot box.“Poll worker recruitment is an issue every election cycle,” said Jeanette Senecal with the League of Women Voters.It’s an issue even more so this year.In the 2016 election, there were nearly a million poll workers across the country, 917,694, working at more than 116,000 polling sites.Many of the poll workers tended to be older: 56% were over the age of 61.Now, though, concerns about COVID-19 mean many in this population, vulnerable to the virus, are choosing to sit out this time around.“Poll workers are kind of the make or break point,” Senecal said. “If they're the people who are interfacing with the voters, they're the people who are supporting those voters at the polling place on Election Day.”Officials estimate that across the U.S. about a quarter of a million poll workers may still be needed. It can take about 30 days to train them all, which means they need poll workers to sign up right now, in order to be ready by Election Day. Poll worker pay varies by county, but in some it can be as much as an hour.“This is a real opportunity for us to recruit a new generation of Americans, who can help ensure a safe and fair and as smooth as possible Election Day,” said Erika Soto Lamb, a vice-president at Comedy Central and MTV.The networks are part of a new, national non-profit coalition called Power the Polls, targeting younger people, who have never been poll workers before.“The work of Power the Polls is really in sounding the alarm bell, bringing people into the mix and then connecting them with their local boards of elections and secretaries of state, to make sure they are plugged in to work the polls in areas that need it the most,” Soto Lamb said.If there is a shortage of poll workers, experts fear some polling places may not be able to open at all and the ones that do could experience long lines.“This summer, we saw a voting rights legend pass away in Congressman John Lewis, whose life was built around voting rights and access – and this is one of those component parts,” Soto Lamb said.So far, Power the Polls has recruited 160,000 poll workers for Election Day.
