The holiday season is wrapping up, those presents open and bellies are full. But beware, holiday Grinches are still out there ready to steal.Year after year, the number of post-holiday scams popping up are on the the rise, taking your new present away before they can even be used. Those scams target presents like gift cards or new pieces of technology, like a smart TV or new computer. The biggest post-holiday scams out there hit gift cards to specific stores like Starbucks or Best Buy and even generic Visa or MasterCard debit gift cards. They usually target when people go to check their balance online, according to the Better Business Bureau. They often lead you to a fake website, either from an internet search or a fake email that popped into your inbox. The fake website, which often looks like the real website, asks for the gift card number and the pin/security code. Once you click submit on the fake site, the scammers have all the information and can start using it and your gift money is gone. But this year's scams don't just affect gift cards. As technology gets smarter, like our computers and smart TVs, scammers are turning into hackers to get to your personal information. Before you even start using that new smart TV, computer or other piece of technology, make sure you update it. The prompts will usually appear on the screen or you can find them inside the "settings" or "about" windows on the device. Also, make sure you register the device to your email address. That won't just help with the warranty, it will also make sure you get email updates if there are security breaches. Those software updates are vital to keeping your personal information secure. 1733

The bill is signed and the federal trillion stimulus package is on the way.But many people are still confused and wonder if they will get a check for ,200.Here's what we do know about who will qualify for the stimulus funds laid out the CARES Act, as of April 8.Q: How will I receive my check? For those who received their last IRS tax refund via direct deposit, the money will go directly into their bank account. Those that received their refund the old-fashioned way, a check will come by mail. But that could take several months, the government says. The IRS is supposed to set up a portal on its website in the coming days, where anyone can update their bank account.Q: Will I qualify for a ,200 stimulus check?About 90% of adults should qualify for an initial ,200 stimulus payment, with a second payment possible later this spring. If they qualify:Individuals will receive a check for ,200.Married couples will receive a check for ,400.Each dependent child will receive 0 (payable to their parents). If your child is a college student who works a job, the rules are still murky as to who gets the check.Q: Who does not qualify for a check?High-income individuals will not receive a check.Benefits will phase out starting at ,000 in Adjusted Gross Income.Singles earning more than ,000 (Adjusted Gross Income) in 2019 will not receive any check.Married couples earning more than 8,000 in 2019 will not receive any check.Q: What if you owe back child support or back taxes?Right now, it does not appear the government will take anything out of stimulus checks for unpaid taxes or other government liens. However, the Wall Street Journal says back child support will likely be taken out of checks.Q: What if you get Social Security and do not file taxes?Seniors on Social Security and younger people on disability will now qualify for a check automatically. Those that receive Social Security do not have to file any tax forms, and the check will go to the same bank account (or mailbox) where they receive monthly benefit checks. However, younger people with very little income and not file taxes must have filed taxes last year or this spring in order to receive a check. That check will be based on your 2018 or 2019 tax return. So younger people must file a 1040 this spring, or the government has no way of knowing if they qualify.Q: What if some of your income is unreported cash? That should not affect the checks, as they are based on the last tax return a person has filed.Q: When will I receive my money?Congressional leaders hope to have the first checks heading to bank accounts in the next week or two. However, if the IRS does not have a bank account number on file, it could be three months before paper checks arrive. As always, don't waste your money._______________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. Terry Jones, a member of the Monty Python comedy troupe, has died at 77. Jones's agent says he died Tuesday evening. In a statement, his family said he died “after a long, extremely brave but always good humored battle with a rare form of dementia, FTD.” With Eric Idle, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman and Terry Gilliam, Jones formed Monty Python's Flying Circus, whose anarchic humor helped revolutionize British comedy. 445

The cost of living in rural America tends to be less expensive than rent in big cities, but even in a rural town like Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, many working Americans are struggling to get by.Data from the United Way show 64 percent of households in Stroudsburg are below poverty line or make less than needed to afford basic living expenses.“I am a single mom of three children, ranging from 22-12,” said Shelly McCarthy. “I work from the time I get up at six in the morning until four at night.”For the last four years, McCarthy has worked up to four jobs at the same time.“From waitressing, doing visiting nursing, and also working with developmental adults,” McCarthy explained. “I miss out on a lot of my 12-year old’s activities at school.”Despite all the hours worked, McCarthy has had months where she couldn’t make the mortgage or had funds for much-needed repairs to her home. As for being able to afford healthier food for the family? That’s out of reach.“My daughter has a thyroid disease. So, I miss out on cooking healthy meals for her, because I had to cut down,” said McCarthy. “I couldn’t afford healthy food. I couldn’t afford Mediterranean fish.”“What is happening in America is that the cost of living is outstripping the wages,” said Sarah Jacobi, with Pocono Mountains United Way. “We are seeing over the last 10 years wages increased by 20 percent, but the cost-of-living increased up to 36 percent for a family of four, so people are just falling farther and farther behind.”The United Way has created a data project known as the A.L.I.C.E., which measures the number of people in America who are Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. It’s essentially the number of people who make above the federal poverty line but less than what they need to afford basic living expenses. “Two out of every five American people today are AIICE,” said Jacobi. “This truly is the American experience that people are living every day.”However, according to the United Way’s data, it doesn’t have to be.“The ALICE report not only does give us that data, to understand where is ALICE and what is their struggle,” said Jacobi. “But it helps us [to] have insight into what are the cost people are truly facing and how we could craft everything from public policy position to help improve lives of people to how we can create programs boots on the ground able to help people.”People like McCarthy are hopeful help will come, either from an economic boost that affects more working-class Americans or public policy that focuses on giving people like her a chance to get ahead. 2595
