SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in Carmel Mountain Ranch plan to continue their fight against a proposed apartment building, even though the City Planning Commission has recommended approval of the project by the City Council."Alante" is a 50-unit apartment building under development by New Pointe Communities. It will be built on top of an existing MTS parking garage that is no longer in use. It will be located at 10211 Rancho Carmel Drive, just east of the 15 near the Ted Williams Freeway."We do believe that the Alante community is a great addition to Carmel Mountain Ranch as it brings 50 apartment units of workforce housing that is much needed in the northern part of the City," New Pointe President Scott Sandstrom told ABC 10News in a statement.Sandstrom also pointed out that 15 of the units will be designated as affordable housing. Sandstrom says they'll be the first affordable units in Carmel Mountain Ranch.But the local community has come out against the project over the last few years. In 2019, a petition gathered 912 signatures to stop the development. And in June, the Carmel Mountain Ranch/Sabre Springs Community Council voted unanimously against it.Despite the opposition, the San Diego Planning Commission voted to recommend approval of Alante to the City Council."Frankly we weren't surprised because the Planning Commission has been ruling against community planning groups very frequently for a long time," says CRMSSCC Chairman Eric Edelman.RELATED: Neighbors push back against construction of apartment complex"Our objection is the bulk and scale of the project," Edelman says. "We would rather see a smaller building with more affordable units."Plans filed with the city say the building will be 6 stories tall and more than 70,000 square feet. 26 of the units will be one-bedroom apartments. The other 24 will be two-bedrooms.It will also have 58 parking spaces, 5 motorcycle spaces and 22 bicycle spaces."We understand that we're probably not going to stop this project altogether but we would like to alter the bulk and scale of it," says Edelman.The decision by the Planning Commission cannot be appealed, since it is a non-binding recommendation. But Edelman says his group will now work on a strategy to convince the City Council to deny it."We'll refine our case based on what we learned from the Planning Commission," says Edelman. "It's really important that the Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Planning Group does its best to advance the feelings of the community as a whole."The community says they have concerns over the building's impact on traffic and wildfire safety. They also worry it will be the tip of the iceberg to allowing more large-scale development in the neighborhood.Right now, a separate developer has plans for a 1,200 unit apartment complex on an abandoned golf course just north of the Alante lot."The main concern there is just that these two things aren't being done in a thoughtful manner, in tandem," says Edelman. "It should be done in a sensible manner. A blanket solution that works in another part of San Diego may not work here in Carmel Mountain Ranch."Sandstrom says Alante gives the city a chance to turn an eyesore into an asset."We hope to turn this home for cars into homes for people," he told the Planning Commission at their meeting on July 23.City Councilman Mark Kersey, who represents the area, told ABC 10News he was not able to comment on the project, since it hasn't formally been presented to the Council. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police Monday identified a shooting victim found in Sherman Heights following a crash.According to police, 25-year-old Jose Alberto Ortiz died after officers found him with gunshot wounds on October 22 near 27th Street and K Street.Police responded to the area after receiving reports of a crash. After responding, police say they found a dark sedan that collided with a parked vehicle.“Upon contacting the driver, they saw that he had sustained trauma that was not consistent with a traffic collision and suspected the male had been shot,” police said.The man was taken to the hospital where he later died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco are working on a spray designed to block the novel coronavirus from hijacking cells in the body, like a biological mask or internal personal protective equipment.They’re doing it by borrowing a defense mechanism from an unlikely source: llamas.The team, led by UCSF graduate student Michael Schoof, engineered a synthetic molecule based on one found in a llama’s immune system that acts like an antibody but is one-tenth the size.Human antibody treatments, known as convalescent plasma, require a transfusion in a hospital setting. But this smaller molecule, called a nanobody, can be easily self-administered via an inhaler or nasal spray and rapidly manufactured using yeast, Schoof said.The scientists named their product AeroNabs. They say it could be an inexpensive intervention for treating and preventing COVID-19 while the world waits for a vaccine.“We don't know how effective vaccines will be. We don't know how long it will take to rapidly deploy them, so we envision this product as hopefully a bridge until there is widespread, effective vaccination,” Schoof said.Once a vaccine is available, AeroNabs could offer protection for individuals who are unable to be inoculated for health reasons, he said, or an early treatment option.The team is in talks with commercial partners and hopes to begin clinical trials soon.In the 1980s, Belgian scientists discovered that about half of the antibodies in camels, llamas and alpacas are shaped differently than the antibodies found in other mammals, including humans. Researchers later learned they could use a fragment of these oddly shaped camelid antibodies to bind to antigens.Those fragments are called nanobodies.Currently, there is only one FDA-approved drug that uses nanobodies. Caplacizumab was approved last year to treat a rare blood disorder.The team at UCSF sifted through billions of nanobodies to find one that binded best to the spike proteins on the coronavirus, then engineered it to stick even better.The coronavirus uses its spikes to enter cells and replicate; the spikes are essentially the pathogen’s key into the body. By coating the spikes with nanobodies or antibodies, the viral key no longer fits into the body’s receptors and the virus can’t get in.“This works in the lab. It needs to be translated into the clinic,” said Schoof.The team at UCSF still needs to figure out the best delivery method, whether it is a nebulizer, an inhaler or a nasal spray. 2524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego police are looking for a man accused of committing a lewd act in the Morena neighborhood.The incident happened on Aug. 12, shortly before 4:30 p.m. A home security camera caught the man stopping on the sidewalk and engaging in the lewd act as he crept near a woman that was gardening outside her home.Police say the woman had her back turned to the man, and she never knew he was there."He was within maybe four or five feet at the time," the woman's husband, Jeremy Pritchett, said. "That's frightening about the situation, someone can creep up to you within 4 feet, and you have no idea."A car drove by, and Pritchett said it scared the man away. Pritchett was home at the time but didn't know what had happened until a few minutes after the man took off. He found out after looking through his security camera footage.San Diego police officers say they have identified the man in the video, and they are going to issue a warrant for his arrest.
