There's an upsurge in approved carry concealed weapon (CCW) licenses in San Diego County. Data provided to Team 10 by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department shows a more than 300 percent increase from 2017 to 2018.Advocates say most people want the ability to protect themselves while opponents argue more people carrying guns doesn't make the streets any safer.Team 10 collected 100 "good cause" statements to examine what reasons people gave to obtain the license. It's a part of the CCW application people have to fill out explaining why they should be approved for a permit. In almost every case, the reason had to do with personal safety. 654

TORONTO (AP) — The NHL believes all seven Canadian teams will be able to start the season playing in their home arenas.NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said Thursday the league believes it is clear to play in Canada during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic after discussions with the five provincial governments with NHL teams to try to gain approval to start Jan. 13.The NHL realigned its divisions for the season so that the North Division — which features all seven Canadian teams — would not have to cross the U.S.-Canada border, which remains closed to non-essential travel until at least Jan. 21.The league released its schedule Wednesday, with each team playing 56 games instead of the usual 82.On Tuesday, the league released its coronavirus-related protocols, which include coaches must wear masks at all times while behind the bench, owners can't have face-to-face meetings with players, and teams can only travel with up to 50 people, according to the Associated Press. The AP also reported that the league had asked the players not to go to restaurants, bars, and clubs and not have outside guests at their homes. 1140

Three firefighters died Thursday while battling two separates blazes, one in Pennsylvania and the other in New York.On Thursday night, a New York City firefighter died during a five-alarm fire in Harlem on the set of the film "Motherless Brooklyn."Michael Davidson, 37, died of injuries in the blaze that broke out in the cellar of an unoccupied building, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a press conference."To our great sorrow, we now know that a NYC firefighter lost his life battling the blaze that grew, and our hearts ache in solidarity with his family," producers of the film said in a statement.Edward Norton is the film's director, and Bruce Willis and Alec Baldwin are among the cast, according to Internet Movie Database. The fire broke out as the film crew wrapped up shooting for the day, according to the producers' statement. "We watched firsthand with astonishment as (firefighters) charged into the smoke to make sure all were safely out and then fought to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading, putting their lives on the line as they do every day," it said. The fire spread rapidly, forcing firefighters to back out of the building. During that time, Davidson became separated from the rest of the unit, Nigro said.Davidson was found unconscious after a desperate search. He was transported to Harlem Hospital, where he later died.Davidson had been with the New York City Fire Department for 15 years and was cited for bravery four times, according to the fire agency's Facebook post. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and four children. Davidson's father is a retired firefighter and had also worked in the same firehouse, Nigro said. Two other firefighters were seriously injured with burns and taken to Weill Cornell Burn Center; others had less serious injuries, Nigro said. 1820

Those in the United States on a student visa could be booted from the country this fall if they are not attending in-person classes, the US Immigration and Customers Enforcement agency announced Monday. At universities that are planning on going online only, students will need to transfer to a university with in-person classes or face being deported from the US. This also means at universities where students have the choice between online and in-person courses, they will need to mostly take in-person courses. This could be an issue for students considered at a high risk of developing complications from the coronavirus. Amid the coronavirus, most universities have stated plans to resume in the fall with in-person courses. But with cases surging around the country brings uncertainty on whether universities will be able to conduct in-person classes. On Monday, Harvard announced plans to hold online courses with limited in-person services. Harvard’s plan will allow for freshmen to live on campus while the rest of the university will mostly be kept away from Harvard.“Harvard was built for connection, not isolation. Without a vaccine or effective clinical treatments for the virus, we know that no choice that reopens the campus is without risk,” the president and deans wrote. “That said, we have worked closely with leading epidemiologists and medical experts to define an approach that we believe will protect the health and safety of our community, while also protecting our academic enterprise and providing students with the conditions they need to be successful academically.”Princeton also announced Monday that most of its courses will be held online. Princeton said it would work with international students who might not be allowed to enter the US due to visa restrictions.“For undergraduates living abroad who are unable to return to campus, there will be some limitations on which courses are available to students who are not in residence,” Princeton said in a press release. Acknowledging time zone and other limitations unique to those living overseas, faculty members and administrators will make every effort to ensure that students studying from abroad will be able to participate in the virtual curricular and co-curricular aspects of the Princeton experience.” 2299

THOREAU, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico authorities say multiple people have been killed in a commercial passenger bus crash along Interstate 40.New Mexico State Police did not say how many people died or how many were injured in Thursday's crash. They said passengers were transported to a hospital and a phone number was set up for family members seeking more information about people who were aboard the bus.The wreckage included a Greyhound bus with front-end damage and a semi-truck that was on its side and with its cargo strewn across the highway and the median.Greyhound says the bus was heading from Albuquerque to Phoenix and there were 47 passengers on board.Spokeswoman Crystal Booker says it's unclear what caused the crash. The crash forced the closure of the westbound lanes of the interstate and traffic was backing up as travelers were being diverted. 866
