As an organization dedicated to the fight to #EndExtinction, we must provide a voice for wildlife. Last year, we added our voice to many other conservationists expressing concerns about these proposed changes & we feel compelled to do so again in light of the current situation.— San Diego Zoo (@sandiegozoo) August 15, 2019 342

As hospitals are becoming overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients, North Dakota is permitting coronavirus-positive health care workers to continue assisting patients. The guidance stipulates that the health care workers must remain asymptomatic and take enhanced precautions in order to stay on the job. This comes as travel nurses are stretched thin as dozens of states are reporting record hospitalizations.Given the situation in North Dakota and elsewhere, it is possible more states will have to follow suit and continue using infected staff members in order to provide care. The CDC has spelled out guidance in these situations. The CDC says hospitals must exhaust a number of other guidelines, including adding travel nurses, postponing elective medical procedures, and postpone elective time off, before going into a crisis staffing situation.“If shortages continue despite other mitigation strategies, consider implementing criteria to allow HCP (health care personnel) with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 who are well enough and willing to work but have not met all Return to Work Criteria to work,” the CDC’s guidance states. “If HCP are allowed to work before meeting all criteria, they should be restricted from contact with severely immunocompromised patients (e.g., transplant, hematology-oncology) and facilities should consider prioritizing their duties in the following order:1. If not already done, allow HCP with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 to perform job duties where they do not interact with others (e.g., patients or other HCP), such as in telemedicine services.2. Allow HCP with confirmed COVID-19 to provide direct care only for patients with confirmed COVID-19, preferably in a cohort setting.3. Allow HCP with confirmed COVID-19 to provide direct care for patients with suspected COVID-19.4. As a last resort, allow HCP with confirmed COVID-19 to provide direct care for patients without suspected or confirmed COVID-19.”North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum spelled out the challenges facing his state.“Our hospitals are under enormous pressure now,” Burgum said. “We can see the future two, three weeks out, and we know that we have severe constraints.”Despite Burgum’s warning, his state is among the ones not to issue an order requiring masks in public places. In update CDC guidance, the agency says that masks can reduce the viral load for the wearer, in addition to prevent the spread of the virus.Steven Weiser, MD, president of Altru Health System in Grand Forks, North Dakota,, wrote in an op-ed about the toll the virus is having on workers. "Your neighbors in healthcare are pleading with you – they are tired, they are covering shifts for their colleagues who cannot work, they are working in new areas and rallying together to ensure that our promise of providing care to our community is upheld," Weiser wrote. "I ask you, on behalf of our team of healthcare workers, to please take the recommendations... very seriously. This is about protecting our at-risk community members and friends. We need your partnership to stop the spread, now. Doing so will save lives." 3105

Americans are tweeting a lot about the band BTS, yoga and chicken during the pandemic. As lockdowns and stay-at-home orders from the coronavirus pandemic pushed many of us inside and away from friends and coworkers, more conversations moved to social media. Twitter released a “twitter from home” trends report this week looking at what we are talking about on their platform between March and August. They reported the yoga/meditation emoji was used 161 percent more during the pandemic than in 2019, the camping emoji was used 93 percent more, and in a sign of how many of us are learning new hobbies, the yarn/knitting emoji increased in use by 67 percent. As for what we are not doing, the selfie emoji and the haircut emoji both decreased in use by 32 percent during the pandemic over 2019.While at home, we are sharing more about our food and baking habits. An armed citizen gunned down a shooter at an Oklahoma City restaurant on Thursday, killing him, police said.A man walked into Louie's Grill & Bar and opened fire, striking two people. As the gunman was fleeing the scene, a bystander armed with a pistol confronted the shooter and fatally shot him outside the restaurant, Oklahoma City Police Captain Bo Mathews told reporters."Right now, all I know is that it was just a good Samaritan that was there and looks like he took the right measures to be able to put an end to a terrible, terrible incident," Mathews said. The shooter's motive is not known and his identity has not been confirmed. 652

As calls for police reform permeate among supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Fraternal Order of Police announced on Friday it has endorsed Donald Trump for president. The FOP, which is the nation’s largest police union with 355,000 members, endorsed Trump for the second time. The union has not endorsed a Democrat for president since 1996. The FOP endorsed George W. Bush in 2004 and 2004, John McCain in 2008, and did not issue a formal endorsement in 2012.“During his first four years, President Trump has made it crystal clear that he has our backs,” FOP President Patrick Yoes said. “Our members know that he listens to the concerns of our brothers and sisters in uniform and is able to make tough decisions on the issues most important to law enforcement. President Trump is committed to keeping our communities and families safe.”While Democratic nominee Joe Biden did not win over the support of the FOP, the Biden campaign responded on Friday by announcing it has garnered support from 190 law enforcement officials throughout the US.The list distributed by the Biden campaign includes current and former sheriffs, prosecutors and attorneys general.“Joe Biden has always stood on the right side of the law and is offering a much needed vision for our Nation. When asked the question, would you feel safe in Joe Biden’s America? The answer is yes,” said Retired Chief and former President of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, Tom Manger. “I’ve worked with Vice President Biden for years and know that he can heal the divide in our Country. He has condemned violence of all kinds, and there is no question that I would feel safe in Joe Biden’s America.”Previously, Yoes expressed his support for “Operation Legend,” a program launched by the White House to send federal agents to cities dealing with unrest following the death of George Floyd.“Law enforcement and the maintenance of public safety is primarily the responsibility of local governments,” Yoes explained. “But in too many of our cities, the violence has reached such levels that local agencies need additional resources. Our men and women in uniform in these jurisdictions are demoralized by anti-police rhetoric and they are exhausted from lengthy shifts in response to the pandemic. They desperately need the help that the President is going to provide.” 2353
