SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- In celebration of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, a dedicated marker to commemorate late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was unveiled here on Sunday.The marker, which sits beside the Singapore River, was unveiled by Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is here on a three-day official visit.The marker comprises a text panel and a bronze bust of Deng commissioned by the Chinese Embassy to Singapore. BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- China exported 16,000 tonnes of rare earth to Japan in the first nine months of the year, equivalent to 49.8 percent of its total rare earth exports, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Tuesday.The figure was a 167-percent year-on-year rise, MOC spokesman Yao Jian said at a press conference.Exports to the United States increased 5.5 percent year on year to 62 million tonnes during the same period, equivalent to 19 percent of China's total rare earth exports.China exported 32,200 tonnes of rare earth in the first nine months of the year at an average price of 14,800 U.S. dollars per tonne.Yao said the Chinese government has tightened regulations concerning the development, production and export of rare earth out of concern for the environment.China cut its 2010 rare earth export quota 39 percent year on year while rare earth development and production capacities were reduced by 25 percent and 23 percent, respectively, he said.In addition, China has added a 15- to 25-percent export duty on rare earth exports while banning the export of 41 rare earth-related processed products.China's restrictive policies have been criticized by Japan, the United States and European countries. They said China's restrictions on rare earth exports violate World Trade Organization rules. China refutes such claims."China's restrictive measures comply with WTO rules, as the steps were taken in the whole process of exploitation, production and export," Yao said.China continued to export rare earth in recent years even as environmental pressures grew and resource-depletion approached, he added.He said China hopes other rare earth-rich nations will develop their own resources while adding that China is ready to cooperate with other nations to mine and process rare earth in an environmentally-friendly way.Rare earth is a key component in the manufacture of high-tech products ranging from computers to airplanes. But mining rare earth is a highly-polluting process.With a 90 percent share of the world rare earth trade, China's export quotas are a sensitive issue. In early November, the MOC denied suggestions there would be a drastic reduction in 2011 rare earth export quotas.

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia Gu Xiaojie on Friday signed an agreement on the provision of aid to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).The grant amounting to 30 million RMB, (over 4 million U.S. dollars), will be used to supply equipment and materials for AMISOM. The signing of this agreement comes in the wake of the adoption by the United Nations Security Council, on Dec. 22, of resolution 1964(2010), in which it, inter alia, requested the Secretary- General to continue to provide a logistical support package for AMISOM, for a maximum troop strength of 12,000, as called for by resolution 1863 (2009).In resolution 1964(2010), the Security Council also called on UN Member States and regional and international organizations to make direct bilateral donations in support of AMISOM.By generously providing aid to AMISOM, the People's Republic of China is responding to the call made by the United Nations Security Council and the earlier appeal by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for AU partners to support the ongoing efforts in Somalia, AU said in a statement. Gu Xiaojie reiterated China's continued commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the AU in the area of peace and security and to support all endeavors in this regard. He lauded AU's efforts and resolve towards the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Lamamra stated said that "China has, over the years, been providing multifaceted assistance to the AU and African countries as they strive to address the many challenges facing the continent. WUHAN, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- China is building museums and shooting a blockbuster movie in honor of the 1911 Revolution, whose centenary will be celebrated this year on both sides of the Strait.Also known as the Xinhai Revolution, the uprising in 1911 was remembered for creating the Republic of China, the first republic in the Asian history.Its spiritual leader, Sun Yat-sen, was also the founder of the Kuomintang (KMT).The Republic of China, however, ended its rule after the KMT was defeated by the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and retreated to Taiwan in 1949.Both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have promised a grand celebration of the revolution's 100-year anniversary, which will fall on October 10 this year.On the mainland, an epic movie depicting the revolution will hit the screen in September to recall the event.Named Xinhai Revolution, the movie stars over 70 leading Chinese actors and actresses, including Jackie Chan, Li Bingbing, and Winston Chao.It is another blockbuster China has made to present landmark revolutions.The previous film was Founding of a Republic, which hailed the 60th anniversary of the birth of the People's Republic of China in 2009.Apart from encouraging people to attend the cinema, many Chinese cities are also arranging exhibitions featuring the revolution.In the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the revolution began, a new museum, the 1911 Revolution Museum, will be opened on the eve of the centenary.The city has also mounted a global search for lost materials and artifacts related to the revolution, said He Xiaoxu, the chief of Wuhan Bureau of Culture."The city government will assist in the work of gathering materials for the museum and fund the purchases," said He.So far, the museum has received 40 pieces of artifacts retrieved by purchases and 70 by donations, including three from Taiwan.The three artifacts, including one photograph and two calligraphies by revolutionary figures, were contributed by the leader of a Taiwan-based exchange promotion organization.Yang Yi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the Chinese mainland supported a joint celebration of the anniversary with Taiwan."The commemoration of the revolution will help unite people across the Strait in achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," said Yang.
