Kyle Brown is crediting his pitbull Petey with saving his and his family’s lives after a gunman barricaded himself inside him Romulus home on Friday.Michigan State Police said that the incident began as a botched carjacking a couple of blocks from Brown’s home.The suspect took off through the neighborhood, jumping Brown’s fence. “As soon as I made eye to eye contact with him, I could tell by the look in his eyes and by his intent, he knew what he was doing, and it was an opportunity,” Brown said.Petey charged after the suspect. “When the pit bull came out and encountered him he immediately pulled his gun out and shot him,” Brown said. Even with a bullet wound, Petey was still able to chase the suspect out of the yard.Police say they exchanged gunfire with the suspect as he jumped the fence, hitting the suspect twice. The suspect then jumped back into Brown’s yard and went inside his home.Brown’s son and his friend were inside, and Brown tried to get them all out safely. “When he got to the door he pulled for his gun, and I’m communicating with Tommy, ‘Cmon Cmon Tommy. Hurry up.’ Unfortunately, Tommy just froze up,”  Brown said.The suspect barricaded himself inside the home with Brown’s son’s 7-year-old friend, Tommy.Tommy was released unharmed hours later.The suspect gave himself up to MSP. Tommy, Brown and his son are physically OK.Petey had to be put down because his injuries were so severe. “Petey didn’t make it, but you can’t be upset with him. He not only saved my life but he saved our lives,” Brown said. MSP has not released the suspect's name or the charges he is facing. 1657

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi legislators have voted to remove a Confederate battle emblem from their state flag. Mississippi’s House and Senate voted Sunday to retire the flag adopted in 1894. It's the last state flag that includes a Confederate symbol that many people condemn as racist. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves has said he will sign the bill. The change comes amid widespread protests over racial injustice. Mississippi has a 38% Black population. A commission would design a new flag that cannot include the Confederate symbol but must have the words “In God We Trust.” Voters will be asked to approve the new design in the Nov. 3 election. 655

Ivanka Trump's use of a private email account will soon face new scrutiny on Capitol Hill, with a key House committee and Senate GOP chairman planning to look into whether President Donald Trump's daughter and senior adviser violated the law when conducting government business.The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee plans to revive efforts in the new Congress to look into the White House's use of private emails amid reports that Ivanka Trump used her personal account through much of 2017 to trade messages with Cabinet officials, White House aides and other government employees.The likely incoming Democratic chairman of the committee, Elijah Cummings of Maryland, plans to renew efforts to look into private emails next year after the Republican-controlled panel dropped its investigation into the matter when a separate controversy arose last year. He said Tuesday that his goal is to "prevent this from happening again -- not to turn this into a spectacle the way Republicans went after Hillary Clinton.""We launched a bipartisan investigation last year into White House officials' use of private email accounts for official business, but the White House never gave us the information we requested," said Cummings, who helped author a 2014 update to the Presidential and Federal Records Act. "We need those documents to ensure that Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and other officials are complying with federal records laws and there is a complete record of the activities of this Administration."It's not just Democrats. The Presidential Records Act requires all official White House communications and records be preserved.In a letter sent on Tuesday to the House Judiciary and Oversight committees, the group calls for a congressional investigation into the matter, which it calls a "blatant derogation of the law."The letter says that the "parallels between Ms. Trump's conduct and that of Secretary Clinton are inescapable" and that an investigation is required to determine if materials have been adequately collected, whether there were cybersecurity breaches, and whether any classified materials are involved or rules were broken.Johnson, however, said that the Ivanka Trump situation does not appear to be as problematic, in his view, of the Clinton controversy."I don't think the comparisons between Hillary Clinton and Ivanka Trump are comparable at all," saying there was a private email server set up in the Clinton case and saying that Ivanka Trump's email use appeared to be mainly during the transition period, though he acknowledged he needed more information.Johnson also said: "In today's world, we have to recognize the reality that people are human beings, they are private citizens and are going to have private email."Asked if that meant he was giving Trump's daughter a pass, he insisted he wasn't."I am concerned. JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK (KGTV) -- After four days alone in the desert, Paul Hanks was found injured - but alive - Thursday night. The 54-year-old went missing while hiking the Maze Loop on Sunday, March 11, The High Desert Star reports. He left San Diego on Sunday, but never checked into his hotel. The Maze Loop is the same trail where the bodies of Rachel Nguyen and Josseph Orbeso were found near last October, nearly three months after they were reported missing in July. RELATED: Missing couple in Joshua Tree National Park died in murder-suicideHanks' pickup truck was found in the same parking lot as Nguyen and Orbeso. Just after 4 p.m. Thursday a member of the Joshua Park Search and Rescue team located Hanks, Gerorge Land, the park's public information officer said in a Facebook video. "It appears he fell about 20 feet," Land said. "He sustained some head injuries, we don't know the exact nature of all of his injuries...but he was conscious, he was talking to rescuers."10News is working to learn more about Hanks' current condition.
