LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KGTV) - The beautiful wildflower super bloom in Southern California is being met with some ugly behavior. A sea of bright orange poppies carpets the hills along Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore. Word spread when the bloom erupted; now the area is a huge draw for visitors. "Came out here to see the beauty in nature, the poppies, they only come every few years, so you have to enjoy it,” said Lake Elsinore resident Jessica Rodriguez. She said she’s never seen so many people visit. To see the poppies, visitors must find a spot in a mile-long stretch of parked cars. Others opt to take photos from the freeway, which is illegal. "They want that perfect picture, they can get pretty ones but it’s at the expense of the habitat,” said Josh Reinig, MSHCP Reserve Manager. The parks department posted signs telling people not to step on flowers, and they created barriers to protect certain areas. "You're kind of seeing them a lot more trampled stepped on, people just sitting on them,” Reining said. Picking just one flower could mean 30 fewer flowers grow in the future. "Main thing; stay on trail, I understand people want to get the beautiful selfie in the flowers but if everyone did that, we wouldn't have these poppies." 1253

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer throughout the U.S. — and the Denver area seemingly took that to heart by skipping straight to winter on Tuesday.Just after noon on Monday, Denver recorded temperatures of over 90 degrees. Less than 24 hours later, temperatures had plummeted to near freezing, and snow was falling in parts of the city.A powerful cold front was the culprit for the sharp change in temperatures. The system will bring winter weather to the Denver area through Wednesday evening.According to meteorologists with Scripps station KMGH in Denver, between 3 and 7 inches of snow is expected to fall in the Front Range corridor by early Wednesday. There are also freeze warnings in effect for the Colorado plains east of Denver, where temperatures are expected to dip below freezing by Wednesday morning.Officials fear the early freeze could damage crops, some of which are about to be harvested. Officials also fear that a deep freeze with full foliage could cause tree limbs to snap and cause power outages in the area.KMGH reports that Denver's earliest snow of the season came Sept. 3, 1961, when a Labor Day storm brought 4.2 inches to the city's airport and dumped nearly a foot in the western suburbs and foothills. On Sept. 8, 1962, Denver saw its earliest freeze of the season when temperatures dipped to 31 degrees.Wednesday's snowfall was Denver's earliest in the last decade. The previous record for earlier snowfall in the last 10 years came Oct. 5, 2012. Last year's first snow came earlier than usual on Oct. 10 — still a full month earlier than Tuesday's snowfall. The enormous temperature swing between Monday and Tuesday could also turn out to be the largest swing on record. The previous record occurred on Jan. 25, 1872, when the temperature dropped 66 degrees, from 46 degrees to -20 degrees.Monday also marked Denver's 73rd day in 2020 with temperatures in the 90s, which ties an all-time record. The city could break that record by early next week when temperatures are expected to climb back into the high 80s. 2061

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — East County residents say they're behind a local dog rescue's efforts to provide for canines, but that the facility has been operating dangerously.Suzy Avalos lives next door to the Happy Hearts German Shepherd Rescue, which is run out of a La Mesa home. She tells 10News the dogs that reside in the yard have had no problem jumping the fence."You see the fence is not high. It's right up here. The dogs don't have a problem jumping over this fence," Avalos said. "I've lived here for 10 years and it's just progressively getting worse."RELATED: Disease fatal to dogs that can spread to humans on the rise in some statesWhen the dogs escape they can also be aggressive, neighbors say, with at least one dangerous incident being recorded. 10News obtained records from the La Mesa Police Department showing at least 28 instances where officers responded to the dog rescue to help round up escaped canines or help people who say they were attacked by the dogs."We have a lot of people on this street that have young kids and I'm just worried a child is going to get bit or something worse is going to happen," Avalos said. "They're out of control and she should not have a license."The woman who runs the dog rescue, Donna, declined an interview by 10News. She did say she's sorry people are afraid of her dogs or any dogs.RELATED: 140 rats once living in van in Del Mar now up for adoptionDonna added that she's in the process of moving the rescue to a new facility in North County.Still, neighbors say she's spread that claim for a while. While they support the idea of rescuing the dogs, they say it needs to be done more responsibly. Or the rescue needs to stop."The frequency with which she forgets to close her gates or the dogs escape, it kind of imperils the neighborhood," Sean Hixson, another neighbor, told 10News. 1855

Law enforcement officials from New York to Florida are examining clues to find the person or persons who sent 10 packages containing what appear to be explosive materials to prominent Democrats, critics of President Donald Trump, and to CNN's New York offices as authorities classify the incidents as domestic terrorism.Three new packages were detected Thursday -- two intended for former Vice President Joe Biden and one for actor-director Robert DeNiro -- each bearing the same markings as the seven packages detected earlier this week. And authorities now believe several of the packages went through the Opa-locka, Florida, processing and distribution center, according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation. The devices mark one of the most serious attempts to stoke fear and terror in the US in a period that has already seen a number of violent political attacks. The apparent bombs, while rudimentary in design, according to law enforcement officials, targeted two former US presidents, a former vice president and potential presidential contender, and numerous outspoken critics of the Trump administration.Investigators are reviewing security footage from the CNN building and examining the packages themselves for potential clues, according to current and former law enforcement officials."Everything is a clue," a law enforcement official said.As authorities examine clues, they are also finding more questions to answer. One key question authorities are puzzling over is why none of the apparent bombs detonated, a second law enforcement source said, raising questions about the skill and motive of the bombmaker. This person said either the bombmaker was good enough to ensure none would go off and never intended them to explode or it was poorly constructed. Authorities consider the bombs to be potentially destructive because of the presence of what is believed to be pyrotechnic powder. Though it appears they were handled through the postal system -- and thus jostled and moved -- without triggering any explosion.William Sweeney, FBI special agent in charge of the New York field office, said Thursday afternoon that the powder discovered with the package sent to CNN did not pose a biological threat but another official said it was undergoing testing. The FBI's counterterrorism team is leading the investigation and has classified it as a domestic terror matter, the law enforcement official said. That classification is based on the absence of other information and could change. The Secret Service, US Postal Inspector Service, and ATF are also working on the investigation with various state and federal offices. Officials said it is possible additional packages could have been mailed to other locations and not yet discovered.NYPD and FBI officials stressed Thursday that the investigation was still in its early stages and they continued to seek tips from the public. 2926

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A hospital parking lot isn’t the typical place for a family reunion, but after 69 days in the hospital, it was the perfect place for the Rael family to gather to celebrate the fact that Wanda Vigil is now going home.Wanda spend 69 days at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood battling COVID-19 — 42 of them on a ventilator.“She’s a fighter. We were told 20 days in she probably wasn’t going to make it,” brother Alan Rael said.Alan and about two dozen family members gathered in the parking lot of St. Anthony’s on Thursday as Wanda was discharged from the hospital.“It’s a beautiful thing. It’s miraculous,” sister Linda Deborah Sanchez said.Hospital workers lined the lobby in a socially distanced fashion to clap and cheer as Wanda was wheeled out. Her family was waiting outside with signs and hugs.“I am so grateful,” Wanda said. She still has a damaged vocal cord, meaning she can only whisper, and her family acknowledged that she had plenty of recovery still to go.“She still has a journey ahead of her, but she’s alive,” Sanchez said.“My heart is so happy. I’m so happy. My family has been there through thick and thin,” Wanda said.Multiple members of the Rael family were diagnosed with COVID-19, and all recovered. They wanted to send the message that though this day was a happy one, and the vaccine is now being distributed, there are still many people in the hospital fighting the virus.“It’s a serious thing. My sister almost passed away,” Sanchez said. “I ask you please wear masks, stay distanced, wear gloves, wash your hands.”The family says Wanda is most excited to see her grandchildren now that she is out of the hospital and getting to go home — just in time for Christmas.“She’s my big present under the tree,” her sister said through tears. “She’s going home.”This story originally reported by Jason Gruenauer on TheDenverChannel.com. 1881
