New research suggests the CDC’s eviction moratorium has helped reduce the spread of COVID by a considerable amount.One of the main ways state and local governments have tried to curb the growth in coronavirus cases have been through stay-at-home orders, but remaining at home can be close to impossible for the tens of thousands of Americans that have been evicted during the pandemic.“We start to see cases and deaths increase at significant levels about 7 to 10 weeks after the eviction moratorium lifts,” said Kathryn Leifheit, lead researcher of the study conducted at UCLA.The study is awaiting peer review, but it suggests that more than 10,000 COVID-19 deaths and 430,000 COVID-19 cases can be attributed to evictions that took place in 27 states across the country before the federal government enacted its eviction moratorium in September.“We had this hypothesis that evictions might lead people to move into households with their friends or family, or in a worst-case scenario move into homeless shelters,” said Leifheit.The study found the biggest number of cases happened in southern states where eviction moratoriums were lifted sooner. That includes Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina, which all saw at least 20,000 additional COVID cases and 600 deaths thought to be tied to evictions. The biggest jump, though, came in Texas where there were 148,000 additional COVID cases and more than 4,400 deaths.“In general, the folks that get evicted tend to be lower-income and people of color,” said Leifheit. “As we know, those are the people that are really bearing the brunt of the COVID pandemic.”If the recent 0 billion stimulus bill passed by Congress does not extend it, the CDC’s eviction moratorium will expire on Jan. 1.With the way the numbers and weather are trending now, Leifheit fears a confluence of events that could lead to massive growth in cases.“Transmission rates are soaring right now,” she said. “To take away housing, which may be a pretty fundamental protection people have against COVID right now, could be catastrophic.” 2083

Netflix plans to establish one of the largest production hubs in North America with an expansion of its existing studio complex in New Mexico and a commitment to an additional billion in production spending, government and corporate leaders announced Monday.Ten new stages, post-production services, offices, mills, backlots and other infrastructure would be added to Netflix’s growing campus on the southern edge of Albuquerque. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has told top brass at the city's police department to stop arresting people who are caught smoking marijuana in public, according to a City Hall aide.Currently, smoking in public can lead to arrest, while possession of small amounts of marijuana can lead to a summons.This weekend, the mayor told the NYPD to issue summonses for smoking pot in public, instead of making arrests.The NYPD has already begun a working group to evaluate its marijuana enforcement procedures and present its recommendations within 30 days, at the mayor's request. The mayor made it clear this weekend that ending public marijuana smoking arrests is one of the changes he wants.Any changes to NYPD's policy on smoking in public would not take effect until the end of the summer.NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Phil Walzak told CNN that the 30-day working group is already underway, and that the issue is "certainly part of that review.""The working group is reviewing possession and public smoking of marijuana to ensure enforcement is consistent with the values of fairness and trust, while also promoting public safety and addressing community concerns," Walzak said. 1204

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Rush Limbaugh provided an update on his "roller coaster" battle with lung cancer Monday, saying a recent scan showed “some progression” and that it’s “in the wrong direction.”The conservative talk radio host has been seeking treatment since he announced in February that he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.In a statement posted on his website, Limbaugh said his scans had previously shown that his treatments had “rendered the cancer dormant,” meaning they had stopped the growth of the cancer.“It had been reduced, and it had become manageable,” he said.Limbaugh said he has stage 4 lung cancer and that his team has adjusted his chemotherapy drugs with hopes of keeping additional progression at bay as long as possible.“The idea now is to keep it where it is or maybe have it reduce again. NFL offensive lineman Richie Incognito was arrested at an Arizona funeral home Monday, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.Police report that they were called to the Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary at 3:30 p.m. for a disorderly conduct call. Incognito, whose father died earlier this week, as upset with the staff and allegedly damaging "property" inside the business and shouting at employees.Incognito also allegedly said that he had guns in his vehicle and threatened to shoot employees, according to the police report.The 35-year-old free agent offensive lineman was charged with misdemeanor threats and disorderly conduct charges.
