LOS ANGELES (AP) — California hospitals are battling to find beds to house patients amid fears that the exploding coronavirus infection rate will exhaust resources and health care workers. Nearly 17,000 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infections — more than double the previous peak reached in July. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who said he was shot in a station parking lot was lying.Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon said at a news conference late Saturday that Wednesday's "reported sniper assault was fabricated" by Angel Reinosa, a 21-year-old deputy.A department statement on Thursday had said a round hit the top of Reinosa's shoulder, damaging his uniform shirt but failing to penetrate his flesh.But Sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener says no bullets were recovered from the scene and detectives saw "no visible injuries." He says Reinosa eventually admitted making up the story and using a knife to cut the two holes in his shirt.Reinosa has been relieved of his duties and will face a criminal investigation. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The man accused of gunning down rapper Nipsey Hussle and injuring two other men in South Los Angeles pleaded not guilty Thursday. Eric Ronald Holder Jr., 29, was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.Holder, an aspiring rapper, could face a potential life prison sentence if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.RELATED: Man suspected of killing rapper Nipsey Hussle caught in Los AngelesHolder -- who was arrested Tuesday in Bellflower -- is accused of fatally shooting the 33-year-old rapper about 3:20 p.m. Sunday in front of The Marathon Clothing store the singer owned in the 3400 block of West Slauson Avenue in the Hyde Park area. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Officials say a Northern California county has begun a door-to-door coronavirus testing pilot program in a majority Latino community that has become a virus hot spot. Santa Clara County volunteers started handing out self-testing kits in the East San Jose neighborhood of Silicon Valley’s San Jose last week, where 55% of the population is Latino and officials say many residents do not have the ability or means to get tested. Communities of color nationwide have been disproportionately affected by the virus.
