Statistics released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Friday claimed that 10,000 Americans were injured from firework mishaps in 2019, resulting in 12 fatalities.The agency says that 73% of the incidents occurred between June 21 and July 21. While seemingly more harmless than other fireworks, sparklers accounted for a plurality of the injuries, resulting in 900 injuries, half of those were from children under the age of 5.The CSPC said that fireworks killed at least 12 Americans in 2019, several of the deaths happened when victims held and ignited fireworks.With many local firework shows canceled or postponed this summer, there is concern over even more mishaps occurring this summer."Many Americans will not get to see the grand, professional fireworks displays this 4th of July given the cancellations of public celebrations and stay-at-home orders across the country. As an alternative, people are purchasing their own fireworks in an effort to recreate that tradition at home," said CPSC Commissioner Dana Baiocco. "The need for safety awareness regarding fireworks is greater than ever," she said, "and anyone who plans to use consumer fireworks this year should review and follow CPSC's simple safety tips to prevent injuries and incidents."The CSPC issued the following tips for a safe celebration:Never allow young children to play with, or ignite, fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.Light fireworks one at a time, then move away quickly.Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. The battle over the sale of the Confederate flag at the Lorain County Fair reached yet another peak after a vandal posted a Confederate flag on a billboard protesting its sale.The billboard is one of three purchased by the Fair Minded Coalition of Lorain County which urges residents to "say no" to the sale of the Confederate flag at the fair. Coalition member Jeanine Donaldson said she believes someone posting the flag on a coalition billboard is further proof of how it divides a community."To my family and other African-Americans it symbolizes hate, torture and terror," Donaldson said. TAMPA — A Tampa mom is pleading for help to bring her son home after she says his father moved him Lebanon without her permission.3-year-old Dexter was supposed to spend a court-ordered weekend with his father. Instead, Rachelle Smith says Dexter’s father Ali Salamey, a US citizen, went to the embassy, attained passports for himself and Dexter, and then flew them both to Beirut. “I will never stop looking for you, I promise,” Smith said.Smith says she suspected her son Dexter would be moved to Lebanon by his father and appealed to the court. But Ali Salamey was still able to obtain passports through the Lebanese embassy."I stated that I fear that Mr. Salamey will remove and hide our child. This fear was clearly valid," Smith said. "I am here to beg for any and all help to get my little boy returned." Lebanon does not partake in US extradition laws. It also did not sign the Hague Convention Agreement, an international treaty protecting against cases like these. So as it stands, she has no power to bring him back.Without assistance from the state department and president, she believes she may never see her son again. She is asking Florida Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio to help her in bringing Dexter home."I would never have thought he would have taken any attempts to separate the child from his mother," Alex Stavrou, the attorney for Ali Salamey, said.
