A volcanic eruption has spewed molten rock and hazardous gas from the ground in a small community on Hawaii's Big Island, sending people fleeing from their homes as trees burn and the threat of more destruction is feared.Cracks in Kilauea volcano's rift zone -- an area of fissures miles away from the summit -- erupted Thursday and early Friday, spurting lava in Leilani Estates, a community of about 1,700 people near the Big Island's eastern edge.Video posted on social media Thursday showed magma spewing several feet into the air from a new crack in a Leilani Estates street. A public housing building in Cleveland Heights, Ohio has become a target for at least one scammer posing as a nurse and offering free cancer screenings. But instead of giving people help, she walks away with personal information.One victim, Azzizat Crumble said she was flipping through the channels on Saturday when she heard a knock on the door."Opened the door and she said she was from Stephanie Tubbs' and they were going around doing cancer screenings," Crumble said.The woman was dressed in scrubs and even offering an incentive.  "If we were to agree to it, we would get a 0 gift card to Walmart in the mail," Crumble said.Crumble said it's not uncommon to see nurses in her assisted living building, so she agreed."She was like, 'Before we do it, I am going to need to see your ID and Medicaid card.' So I went and got it and she wrote the information down in a notebook," Crumble recalled.The woman then proceeded to swab Crumble's cheeks and was on her way within 10 minutes."And then she was like, 'Okay, well you will receive your card within five to seven business days," said Crumble.Crumble said she didn't think anything of it until she saw a sign on a bulletin board in the hallway of her complex. "Scam alert: If anyone comes to your door asking for your personal information, call the police immediately," Crumble said the sign read.Crumble said her social security number was on the Medicaid card she gave the woman, so she has since been monitoring her credit activity.Police say this is an on-going investigation. They believe at least four people were targeted, two of which handed over their personal information. Police say they do have a person of interest and potentially two others.  1848

A Mississippi school district has apologized and a high school band director has been suspended after the band staged a halftime skit that depicted police being held at gunpoint.The controversial skit came as the Forest Hill High School band from Jackson performed Friday during a football game against Brookhaven High School to the south. It shocked many at the game in Brookhaven, where just six days earlier two police officers were killed in a shootout with a suspect."I was sad because of what happened last weekend, and it felt like they were making fun of it," Sarah McDonald, a Brookhaven High School student, told CNN affiliate WJTV.A woman who said she was a graduate of Brookhaven High School found the performance insensitive."I was shocked by the halftime performance just because of everything that our community is going through," the woman told CNN affiliate WLBT. "No disrespect to Forest Hill, when they decided to do a performance, they should've took that into consideration that we were already going through a lot at this time. We are still trying to figure out what needs to be done about the situation." 1135

A police officer, a doctor and a pharmaceutical assistant were killed after a Monday afternoon shooting at Chicago's Mercy Hospital, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.The shooting was a domestic incident, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said. A Rikers Island inmate is back in police custody in New York after attempting to escape on Thursday, officials said.Around 12:30 p.m., the detainee climbed a recreation yard fence and ran to the shoreline, Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Peter Thorne said.The detainee was apprehended by K-9 Correction Officers Larry McCardle and Gregory Braska, Correction Officers' Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen said."These two brave officers immediately jumped into action to bring the inmate back into custody without any regards for their own safety," Husamudeen said. "We proudly salute them for their bravery and for reminding the public the critical role Correction Officers play every day in maintaining public safety.”Husamudeen is scheduled to speak Thursday afternoon.This is a developing story.
