Community colleges have always put career readiness at the forefront of the courses they offer. Now, in the current economic downturn, they're hoping to increase their student to job pipeline."We really feel like our role is to identify what jobs are available right now for students that they can apply and be working while going to school. What are the future jobs that we need to be preparing students for?" asked Dr. Shanna Jackson, the President of Nashville State Community College in Tennessee. Dr. Jackson says students are battling so much right now, including choosing between having to work and going to school.Dr. Jackson is hoping an million investment in the company Handshake, to help expand job recruitment to community colleges, will help."We actually already have 70 community colleges that have already signed on to be early pilot partners with us so we're really learning from them. We’re listening to them. We’ve started an advisory group with this population so that we can continue to ascertain what are the biggest pain points. What are their biggest areas of need for these students," said Christine Cruzvergara, Handshake's VP of Higher Education and Student Success.Handshake helps connect students with employers through career fairs, job postings and other services, and previously only worked with four-year universities. Cruzvergara says they're working with state systems throughout the country to connect with technical and community colleges."It'll be a really similar experience. It’ll all be part of one network and that's actually why it's a huge benefit to community colleges. We know for some of our biggest employers that they want to recruit 2-year talent. They don't see 2-year talent as different from 4-year talent for internships and jobs, they simply have a number of different types of roles and positions that are available to all types of students," said Cruzvergara. The partnership hopes to bring new recruitment benefits to students."The tools that something like this provides really enhances their opportunity to cast a wider net and then they can decide which job offer they want to say yes to instead of maybe taking the first one they hear about," said Dr. Jackson. COLTON, Calif. (KGTV) - At least five people died Friday afternoon in a fiery crash on Interstate 10 in the San Bernardino County community of Rialto, KABC reported.The California Highway Patrol indicated at least three vehicles and two trucks were involved in the crash that left wreckage on both sides of the freeway at Riverside Ave. about 1 p.m.A big rig heading west veered toward the median, crashed through the center divider and burst into flames, KTLA reported. The truck kept moving across eastbound lanes, striking several vehicles.Five people were killed. The truck driver received only minor injuries and another driver was able to walk away from the crash.After a nearly 16-hour shutdown of the highway, all lanes were reopened Saturday morning, KABC said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.Check traffic HERE.  865

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Like any other case, President Donald Trump’s positive COVID-19 test will set into motion a series of events designed to determine who the president might have been in close contact with. That investigation—called contact tracing—is considered by many experts to be one of the best ways of handling new outbreaks and potential COVID-19 clusters.President Trump announced early Friday morning that he and the first lady had tested positive for the virus. The president had been in Cleveland earlier in the week for the first presidential debate. The incubation period for COVID-19 is anywhere between two to 14 days, although in many cases the period is between three to five days. It remains unclear where and how President Trump was infected with the virus.Members of the small crowd that attended the debate in person were required to be tested for the virus. Anyone with a positive test was not allowed inside.In typical cases, once a person has tested positive for the virus, contact tracers—which act almost like disease detectives—will ask the patient a series of questions about their activities prior to the positive test. Eventually, the contact tracers will work to find out who the patient might have been in close contact with.Generally, close contact is defined as another person who may have been within six feet of the patient for at least 10 minutes. The people identified as close contacts will be alerted by the contact tracers of their possible exposure and risk of infection. All parties are then asked to self-quarantine for at least 14 days.Although the close contacts are not apprised of the identity of the person who tested positive for the virus, sometimes they are not forthcoming with information to contact tracers.“When we call the contacts, you get a variety of responses. Sometimes people hang up, sometimes they cuss us out,” said Romona Brazile of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.The contact tracers will also ask the close contacts about any possible pre-existing conditions and advise them on how to keep the virus from spreading in their homes. The goal of contact tracing is to determine who might have been exposed in order to keep the virus from spreading uncontrollably.Whether it be SARS, HIV, or Ebola, contact tracing has been used by epidemiologists and virologists for decades. It is considered by many to be one of the best ways to prevent further spread of diseaseThe Cuyahoga County Board of Health has had anywhere from 60 to 75 contact tracers and can activate more as they are needed, officials said.
