A Solon man was conned out of 0 earlier this month after a scammer told him he was holding his father hostage with a gun to his head.According to a Solon police report, the 22-year-old victim thought the scam was real because the caller knew his name. The scammer told the victim to go to the nearest Walmart and wire the money to a person in Puerto Rico or his father would be killed. The victim, who was in Pennsylvania at the time, drove to the nearest Walmart and sent the money as requested. He paid a total of 1.50 for the transaction, including the service fee.The victim told police the whole ordeal lasted around five hours. After he wired the money, the victim reached out to his father, who said he was not in any danger and had been at work.  787

A new report through the Brookings Institute found that COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death for Black Americans.A former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agrees with that. The Brookings report looks deeper at disparities. It says the mortality rate for Black Americans is more than twice that for Asian or white Americans.“So, only cancer and heart disease will kill more African Americans this year,” said Trevon Logan, a professor of economics at The Ohio State University. “So, things like stroke, diabetes, all of those are taking a back seat to the coronavirus.”Logan is one of the authors of the report, which finds the impact of the pandemic has disproportionately hit Black Americans in terms of health and money. Some of the contributing problems are a lack of access to care, more dense housing making it easier to be exposed to the virus, African Americans are more likely to be front line workers, and they’re more likely to be in low-wage jobs that have led to high levels of unemployment.“We were devasted in the last great recession and were only beginning to come out of that tunnel, that dark tunnel, in the last year,” said Logan. “So, these setbacks that are experienced by the African American community both in terms of health and economically are simply a different, or a magnitude that they are for the population overall.”Logan says the pandemic has exposed the lack of a safety net to get us through times of crisis. He says there needs to be policies to help all who are unemployed, not just race specific. 1573

A mural of George Floyd in Salt Lake City, Utah, had black tar thrown on it over the weekend. This is the second time the mural has been defaced, a week after the first vandalism. Police confirmed they are investigating the vandalism and whether it constitutes a hate crime under Utah's new law. As of Monday afternoon, the mural was restored by local artists. The pop art-style mural of Floyd's face was painted by anonymous artists, and has become a makeshift memorial alongside images of others who have been killed by police. Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis last month after an officer held him down with a knee on Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. Floyd is Black, the officer involved is white. The mural in Salt Lake City includes six portraits, Floyd and five whom lost their lives due to police brutality in Utah: Bernardo Palacios, Dillon Taylor, Darrien Hunt, Bryan Pena Valencia and Chad Breinholt. 931

A new disinfectant is proving effective against coronavirus. It's called SurfaceWise2.The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) just gave the Allied BioScience product emergency use authorization. The disinfectant is the only long-lasting COVID-19 killer. It's sprayed on surfaces and kills the novel coronavirus and other viruses.“It’s a continuously self-cleaning surface, so as contaminants, germs, virus cells lands on the surface, the product is continuously and begins immediately killing those virus cells and pathogens,” said Jess Hilton, CMO at Allied BioScience. Its makers say testing proves it works for months. The EPA says it can kill coronavirus for us to seven days in one use. It's safe for surfaces and people."The EPA approval clears the way to begin effectively protecting consumers against COVID-19 as the only solution proven to provide long-term, non-toxic surface protection from the virus," said Allied BioScience CEO Michael Ruley in a press release. So far, the emergency use was approved for American Airlines planes and Texas-based companies. The state worked with the company on the waiver. Others are putting in waivers too.“The application opportunities for this product are sort of endless. Anywhere where you have public spaces for high traffic and therefore high contamination environments, this is a solution that goes in-between your daily cleaning,” said Hilton. The company says it costs about 40 to 50 cents per square foot per year to use the product. A large school bus has about 320 square feet of space. That's about 0 per bus a year.Allied BioScience didn’t come up with the disinfectant overnight. The company started making it as a product to kill hospital bacteria a dozen years ago. 1739
