BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- China restored 23,000 hectares of wetlands in 2011, according to the latest figures from the State Forestry Administration (SFA).An SFA spokesman said China reinforced wetland protection in 2011 by increasing subsidies in protecting wetlands. In the year the country carried out 42 wetland protection projects, increased 330,000 hectares of protected wetland areas, added four wetlands of international importance and 68 national wetland parks. The spokesman said in 2012 the country will further step up wetland protection and restoration, finish the second national wetland resources investigation and carry out pilot projects in assessing healthy conditions of the wetland ecological system. So far China has built more than 550 wetland natural reserves, 37 wetlands of international importance, which were listed in the Ramsar international wetland convention, and 100 national wetland parks. About half of the country's natural wetlands have been brought under effective protection, the SFA said.

BEIJING Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have found a plant in Brazil using leaves to capture the tiny worms in the soil, according to Monday's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in the U.S.The plant, named Philcoxia, was found in the tropical grassland of Brazil, where the biodiversity is well conserved. As the scientists searching for the answer of why the plant grows the leaves underground, they found the 1.5 millimeters-wide leaves can trap the worms and produce a digestive enzyme to help its roots to absorb the nutrition.Although it is not the first meat-eating plant to be discovered, the finding has still "broaden up our perception about plants," according to researcher Rafael Silva Oliveira, a plant ecologist at the State University of Campinas in Brazil. It suggests that carnivorous plants "may have evolved independently more times in plants than previously thought," he added
BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China will firmly stand together with African countries while unswervingly pushing forward Sino-African strategic partnership, no matter how the international environment changes, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun Thursday.Zhai made the remarks in a signed article on top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin's upcoming visit to Africa.Africa still faced enormous challenges against the backdrop of simmering global finance crisis, and turbulence encountered by several countries in western Asia and northern Africa, which dealt a blow to Africa's peace, stability and development, Zhai said, adding that some outside forces' intervention into Africa's internal affairs impeded the integration process among African countries.Within this context, there is stronger demand of African countries for stability, development, solidarity and independence, he said. The international community should pay more attention to Africa's voice and problems, respect its opinions, accommodate its concerns, protect peace, stability and development in Africa, and support Africa's independent settlement of issues in its own region, Zhai said.He said Jia's visit, first foreign trip paid by Chinese leaders in the Chinese Lunar New Year, will be of great significance in deepening Sino-African ties and cementing the solidarity and cooperation among developing countries, Zhai said.Jia will declare China's determination on developing Sino-African ties during the trip, he said.Enhancing solidarity and cooperation with Africa constitutes an important part of China's diplomacy, and will be the long-term strategic choice firmly pursued by China, Zhai said.
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Only two weeks after its shipment, Amazon's Kindle Fire has already shown the momentum to grab the second place in global tablet computer market, research firm IHS predicted on Friday.Amazon is expected to ship 3.9 million Kindle Fire tablets during the last three months of 2011, the first quarter the product goes on sale, according to preliminary projection from IHS.The number will give Amazon a 13.8-percent share of global tablet market in the fourth quarter, surpassing the 4.8 percent held by No. 3 player Samsung, and second only to Apple's commanding 65.6 percent market share."Nearly two years after Apple Inc. rolled out the iPad, a competitor has finally developed an alternative which looks like it might have enough of Apple's secret sauce to succeed," Rhoda Alexander, senior manager of tablet and monitor research for IHS, said in a statement."Initial market response strongly suggests that Amazon, with the Kindle Fire, has found the right combination of savvy pricing, astute marketing, accessible content and an appropriate business model, positioning the Kindle Fire to appeal to a brand-new set of media tablet buyers," she added.IHS analysts noted that with a price tag of 199 U.S. dollars, the Kindle Fire has set a new bar for pricing, bringing the tablet within reach of a larger portion of the buying public.IHS expects Kindle Fire's rapid ascent to help fuel the expansion of the entire tablet market, now predicting that 64.7 million tablets will be shipped in 2011, higher than its previous forecast of 60 million issued in August. The total tablet shipment number this year will represent a 273- percent growth from 17.4 million units in 2010, said IHS, which has also increased its longer-term projection of global tablet shipment in 2015 to 287.2 million units.
