SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman whose Nissan Versa ended up underneath a semi-truck on Interstate 8 in El Cajon Monday escaped serious injury and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said. Heidi Farst, 56, of El Cajon was driving westbound on I-8 near Main Street when her compact car was rear-ended by another vehicle just before 6 a.m. Farst's car then collided with the semi-truck, flipped over and landed upside down underneath the rig, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said. Farst was freed from the wreckage and transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for what were described as minor injuries, a CHP dispatcher said. She was then booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility on suspicion of DUI, according to Garrow. No other injuries were reported. The crash triggered lane closures and a SigAlert. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of opening fire inside a Poway synagogue, killing a woman and injuring three other people, pleaded not guilty today to more than 100 federal hate crime charges alleging he acted out of hatred toward the Jewish and Muslim communities.John T. Earnest, 19, is accused not only of the synagogue shooting but also of an earlier arson fire at an Escondido mosque. He is being charged by both federal and state prosecutors and faces a possible death sentence in both cases. Neither office has made a decision regarding whether they will pursue the death penalty.Earnest, of Rancho Penasquitos, is accused of carrying out the shooting at Chabad of Poway on April 27 -- the last day of Passover -- killing Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who was shot twice in the synagogue's foyer and died at a hospital.The congregation's rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein, 57, lost an index finger in the shooting. Two other people -- Almog Peretz, 34, and his 8-year-old niece, Noya Dahan -- were also injured.Earnest is also accused of setting a March 24 fire at an Escondido mosque -- a crime to which Earnest allegedly confessed in an online manifesto he posted prior to the synagogue shooting.Following his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon, he's slated to return to court May 28 for a preliminary hearing. He remains held without bail.He was charged last Thursday with 109 federal hate crimes: -- 54 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs using a dangerous weapon, resulting in death, bodily injury and attempts to kill; -- 54 counts of hate crimes stemming from the synagogue shooting in violation of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act; and -- one count of damage to religious property by use of fire.Each of the 54 hate crime and obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs counts apply to a person who was inside the synagogue during the shooting, Brewer said. Authorities said the defendant and the victim lived together.Prosecutors said Baisa -- who has significant mental health issues, according to the prosecution and defense -- stabbed his uncle 16 times, mostly in the back. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Monday publicly identified a 39-year-old firefighter killed over the weekend in a suspected DUI motorcycle crash near Lakeside.Ryan Ferrara, an engineer with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, was riding on the back of a westbound 2018 Harley-Davidson that crashed into a parked vehicle in the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office and California Highway Patrol.Ferrara died at a trauma center about an hour later, and the 36-year-old El Cajon resident who had been piloting the two-wheeler was hospitalized for treatment of severe injuries, CHP public-affairs Officer Jeff Christy said.Neither man -- the driver was not publicly identified -- was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck, according to the Highway Patrol."Alcohol and/or drug impairment is suspected as a factor in the collision, and (it) is still under investigation with possible charges pending," Christy said.In a prepared statement, San Diego Fire Chief Colin Stowell said his and his employees' "hearts are broken by the news" of the death of Ferrara, who had been with the city emergency-services agency for 13 years. 1203
