A New Mexico family found out quickly how tough it would be to travel during the pandemic.Kylah Guerra was just 20 weeks into her pregnancy when doctors diagnosed her baby, Emerie, with lung lesions in the lower respiratory tract. That was back in March at the start of the pandemic.Getting the proper care for their daughter would mean Kylah and her husband would not only need to travel to Children's Hospital Colorado but would temporarily need to live nearby.“They did let me know that since we are so far that they didn't want us, me, to be travelling back home. So, he pretty much said that day you're going to be living in Colorado until you deliver,” said Kylah.Doctors say Emerie showed no symptoms when she was born June 24.The family returned to New Mexico for a couple days but returned less than two weeks later when Emerie had trouble breathing.Due to the pandemic and the nature of Emerie's condition, getting back to Colorado meant they had to go by emergency helicopter.“In the moment, we were trying to get her what she needed. Our main priority was just getting her back to where we knew they could help her. Once we seen, the flight crew arrived at our hospital. It was like a little bit of a relief,” said Kylah.The surgery was successful, and doctors removed the lesions.Meanwhile, the pandemic hasn't slowed the number of surgeries done at the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Colorado, because they are considered essential. The hospital has seen a 61% increase in surgeries over the same time last year. About 81% of patients seen in the fetal care center are from out of state. 1628

A string of five arrests in one week is highlighting a new trend in the drug smuggling business. Teens are strapping Fentanyl to their stomachs and back and trying to walk it across the border.Since March 27th, US Border Patrol agents have made five such arrests of teenagers at the San Ysidro port of entry."It's something that the US Attorney's office is not going to sit idly by and watch the cartels manipulate these children," says Deptuty US Attorney Mark Conover.Overall, Fentanyl smuggling is on the rise. Officials say it's up 1250% since 2015. And between 2016 and 2017, the number of Fentanyl seizures at San Diego's border went up from 260 to 952.But it hasn't been until the last few months that agents started seeing teens trying to move the drug."Cartels are using high school students to recruit other high school students," says Conover. "Oftentimes it's underpriveleged students that need a few hundred dollars are are willing to assume the risk of strapping drugs to their body."The arrests show that most of the teens are US Citizens who live in Mexico with their families. They cross the border every morning for school. Many don't know the danger associated with the drug.Fentanyl is extremely potent. The amount that it takes to cause a fatal overdose is smaller than the size of Abraham Lincoln's face on a penny. Agents worry that if the package the teens are smuggling breaks, it could kill them and others around them.Already in 2018, there have been 8 confirmed overdose deaths from Fentanyl in San Diego, with another 12 under suspicion.  In 2017, there were 82. As recently as 2014, when the first Fentanyl seizure was made at the border, there were only 15."This is a binational problem, and it requires a binational solution," says Conover.The US Attorney's office met this week with the Mexican Consular General in San Diego to discuss ways to fight the new trend. They plan PSAs that will air on both sides of the border, and an educational program where they can go into schools and teach kids the legal and physical dangers of becoming a drug mule."We certainly hope the kids that would consider this, once they know the risks, once the know the consequences, once they know there's very little upside for themselves, they'll think twice," says Conover.The US Attorney's office is also working with the DA's office in San Diego on prosecuting offenders. But since the teens are in the juvenile system, oftentimes the punishment is light. For adults, 400 grams of Fentanyl carries a mandatory 10-year sentence. A Pacific Beach woman was hospitalized after tripping over a dockless scooter left next to a traffic light on Garnet Avenue.The incident happened July 1, the day the city began enforcing scooter regulations. Ellie Fellers, who is in her 80s, was trying to cross Mission Boulevard at Garnet Avenue to mail a letter. She says she pressed the button to cross on the the traffic light, which was surrounded by unused scooters. Once she got the signal, she turned to cross but tripped over a scooter.Fellers says she suffered two concussions and a bleed above her adrenal gland. "Enough of this," Fellers told the City Council Tuesday. "The money you're making on those scooters can't possibly make up for the amount that it's costing you."The new city rules call for painted corrals that designate where scooter riders can leave the devices. However, they're currently only located in downtown. On Wednesday in Pacific Beach, there were scooters left along the sidewalks or toppled over in piles. "All of this is making it very difficult for pedestrians to get around town, and we've noticed that people who normally walk for exercise, like Ms. Fellers - they're saying we don't feel comfortable walking for exercise in our own community," said Scott Chipman, a 45-year Pacific Beach resident and a member of its community planning group.A spokeswoman for the mayor says 100 dockless scooter corrals will be added in Pacific Beach, and another 80 in Ocean Beach, by the end of the month.Meanwhile, Chipman and other residents are reporting that many of the scooters are not slowing to the geo-fenced limit of 8 miles per hour along the boardwalk.Annalisa Snow, who was riding a scooter along the boardwalk Wednesday, said she hasn't noticed any change."I haven't personally," she said.
