A new wave of pollution is littering our streets and shores, disposable face masks and plastic gloves.The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) has surged around the world, with one study estimating a monthly usage of 129 billion face masks and 65 billion gloves globally."The amount of PPE we're finding, even just anecdotally walking through our streets, is astounding," said Alex Ferron, Chapter Chair of the San Diego Surfrider Foundation.Making matters worse, the pandemic has impacted some of the traditional methods used to tackle pollution.Last year, Surfrider San Diego's beach clean-ups removed more than 16,000 pounds of trash from the coastline. But with social distancing laws, the nonprofit fears that number will be drastically lower in 2020."Plastic pollution hasn't stopped. Plastic is being used, if not more than ever," said Ferron. The French nonprofit Ope?ration Mer Propre is documenting PPE waste in the Mediterranean Sea, sharing videos and pictures of gloves and face coverings littering the seafloor.Ferron says the pandemic also reversed other progress made by environmental groups."Initially, we saw a big trend away from reusable items at all, my coffee shop wouldn't take my mug, my grocery store wouldn't take my bag."Ferron says she was OK with this safety precaution early on because little was known about the virus.But now, she points to some of the latest CDC information, which says COVID is mainly spread from person-to-person, within close contact. Transmission through contaminated surfaces has not been documented.A health expert statement signed by over 100 scientists around the world stated that reusable systems could be used safely by employing basic hygiene.To try and tackle the problem, Surfrider San Diego launched a solo cleanup campaign, encouraging individuals to clean old and new waste polluting our communities."Empower people to go out and pick up trash. In their neighborhood, in their parks, at their local beach, wherever they feel comfortable, and do their part," said Ferron. The nonprofit has guidelines on how to do this safely, urging people to wear a mask, use reusable gloves, and a trash grabber if possible. Also, they say to bring two bags to separate PPE from recyclables.Those who can't get out and clean can do their part by making sure their PPE ends up in a trash can and not the ground.Ferron says whether or not you live near a beach, you can make a difference."It's not just an ocean issue, it's an environment issue," Ferron said. 2522

A Marine lance corporal who marched at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last year has been kicked out of the service after he spent nearly a month jail.According to the Jacksonville Daily News in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Vasillios Pistolis, 19, was discharged from duty and kicked out of the Marine Corps on July 11. Pistolis was court-martialed on June 18 for an investigation into violations of Articles 92 and 107 of the Uniform of Military Justice.Among the violations covered in those articles are making "false statements," "failure to obey orders or regulations" and "dereliction of duty."Pistolis was sentenced to 28 days in confinement in the brig, a forfeiture of some of his paycheck and a reduction of rank.ProPublica and Frontline reported in June that Pistolis marched at the "Unite The Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. A Philadelphia woman is hailing a Cleveland Clinic doctor a hero after he helped save her life while on an airplane. On Saturday, 28-year-old Ashley Spencer boarded an American Airlines flight in Philadelphia destined for Cleveland. But shortly after the plane took off Spencer passed out."I stopped breathing," she said. "I still had a pulse. That's when the stewardess said, 'Is there any medical professionals on the aircraft? It's an emergency.'" Spencer, who has a severe peanut allergy, was having an allergic reaction to a bag of chips she had eaten right before the flight. Her body was going into anaphylactic shock. That's when Dr. Erich Kiehl, an electrophysiology fellow from the Cleveland Clinic, and another doctor from North Carolina sprang into action. The men injected Spencer with an Epi-Pen four separate times and monitored her vitals over and over.To make matters even scarier, Spencer suffers from Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), a rare auto immune disease. Because of the disease, she said her heart isn't in the best shape. She's spent the last several years in and out of the hospital undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy."When a person is going into anaphylactic shock it has to be taken seriously," she said. "Having Dr. Kiehl on board was so important. He was monitoring the heart completely." The plane made an emergency landing in Pittsburgh and Spencer was rushed to the hospital. She spent Saturday night in the ICU recovering from the reaction. Spencer said she's gone into anaphylactic shock in the past and has received treatment at the hospital, but the help she received from the men in the air was above and beyond."I would have to say the treatment I got on an aircraft was probably better," Spencer said.What's ironic is that Spencer was on the plane to Cleveland because on Monday she's scheduled to meet with doctors at the Cleveland Clinic in her search for answers about her rare disease.Spencer said she is eternally grateful for both doctors who helped her on the plane. She's already purchased plaques for both men as a way to say thank you."I am beyond thankful," she said. "I could have died up there." Spencer said she hopes the Cleveland Clinic can help her meet up with Dr. Kiehl while she's in town.  2428

A motorcade escorting Vice President Mike Pence to a series events near Pittsburgh was involved in two accidents on Thursday, according to reporters in the press pool.Reporters for NBC News and Newsmax say that after Pence arrived at a Western Pennsylvania airport, a Trump campaign bus was involved in a "minor accident" with a dump truck. Though the Vice President was aboard the bus at the time of the accident, he was unhurt. Pence immediately left the bus and moved to a limo.Later, the outlets report that two motorcycles in the motorcade were involved in an accident. Neither driver was injured, and the motorcade was again on the move shortly after.On Thursday, Pence tweeted his thanks to all law enforcement officers involved in his motorcade. 761

A man was arrested for battery and disorderly conduct for allegedly spitting on a boy and telling him he “now has coronavirus.”Jason Copenhaver, 47, walked up to the boy on Sunday at a restaurant in Treasure Island, Florida. He asked the boy if he was wearing a face mask, according to the police report. The boy said yes, and Copenhaver told him to take it off and asked to shake his hand.The boy refused, according to police, then Copenhaver grabbed the boy’s hand and said “you now have coronavirus” while standing close enough to the boy for spit to land on his face.The police report also notes that Copenhaver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, and tried to hit an employee at the restaurant who asked him to sit down. Staff was able to walk him outside and hold him on the ground until police arrived.Once in custody, Copenhaver told police he doesn’t know if he has coronavirus and has never been tested. 936
