SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans requested a record number of mail-in ballots for th 2018 general election, 1.2 million to be exact.Now, as tens of thousands arrive at the Registrar's office every day ahead of election day, new technology is helping make sure every ballot is processed and counted."This is our 144 pocket ballot sorter," says Registrar Michael Vu, showing off one of two brand new machines his office bought with this election in mind."After the 2016 election we said the mail ballot population is so great we need to invest in something that's even higher speed," says Vu.The new machine can process up to 44,000 ballots per hour, twice the number of the old machine. It can also sort them by city and council district. That comes in handy with an election as big as this week's."We have 326 contests on ballot, spanning 485 candidates, and 52 measures on there," says Vu.By late Sunday, the Registrar had already received about 500,000 mail-in ballots. That includes several thousand people who voted early in-person. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the drop of a banner, the Rock Church replaced the old sign of the Body Shop Strip Club purchased by the church.The church says they’re unsure what they’ll do with the building, but Thursday, they made it clear it’s no longer a strip club.It was quite the presentation, dozens of people, a stage and a sound system. The announcement the church made yesterday officially unveiled Thursday.RELATED: Rock Church buys former strip club in Midway DistrictWith Pastor Miles McPherson leading the charge, a Rock Church banner draped over the sign of the former strip club. “I’m very excited for what this won’t be, and how we can help the girls moving forward,” McPherson said. The church and several investors brought the club and its license for .2 million.Councilmember Lorie Zapf said the move is the beginning of a new future for the Midway with a vision of parks, families and a new welcoming look. “Midway is no longer going to be the red light district of yesteryear.”The problem with the plan, however, is the building sits just feet away from another strip club. “They started harassing me in April, I was called about 15 times by their broker,” said Kathleen Morgan, who owns Les Girls Theater.“It’s easy to stigmatize this type of business. But we don’t even have male bouncers, we don’t even serve alcohol, we’re old school burlesque,” Morgan said.On stage Thursday, was a pledge to take over Morgan’s place. “I’m hoping that they can acquire the property next door. Once the Midway plan is approved, they’ll be able to plan for the future of what’s allowed here by the zoning,” Zapf said.Morgan says investors are trying to driver her out. The church says they aren’t involved in that. “That’s something that will have to take its own course, we’re not necessarily pushing that,” said McPherson.Morgan also says the business has been vandalized recently, adding if she sells, it won’t be to the church. “In 50 years we’ve never had this type of vandalism, we’ve never had these types of issues. San Diego (KGTV)- After receiving a failing grade by the American Lung Association, the County of San Diego is rolling out some new tools to fight air pollution. In port-side communities like Sherman Heights, Logan Heights and Barrio Logan, the rates for Asthma are the highest in the state. This morning county leaders unveiled its new innovative monitors and cars. “This has never been done before,” says Aclima’s Chief Scientist, Melissa Lunden. For the past three months, two air quality cars have been driven around the county for 24 hours at a time collecting samples of air pollutants. “You get a map, a street by street map, of what the air pollution is and what the air pollutants are on those particular streets,” says Lunden. “That allows you to really locate in that region an area of concern.”Stationary monitors will also be set up in areas like Barrio Logan, Sherman Heights, and Logan Heights. Officials will be able to monitor what’s being inhaled by the people who live in these communities. “What we expect to happen is we’re going to find elevated levels of pollution at the street level that we didn’t see with our regional monitors,” says Assistant Director of the Air Pollution Control District, John Adams. With each monitor, the air is pulled into an inlet over 24 hours. The filter is then taken out and tested in a lab. The Air Pollution Control District has already placed monitors along Interstate 15 in Carmel Mountain and Interstate 5 in San Isidro. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection says officers seized more than 43,000 pounds of drugs at California ports of entry in June.Across six ports of entry along California's border with Mexico, CBP says officers stopped attempts to smuggle 34,685 lbs. of marijuana, 7,661 lbs. of methamphetamine, 635 lbs. of cocaine, 166 lbs. of heroin, and 165 lbs. of fentanyl in June. The total street value of the narcotics is more than million.The narcotics were found strapped to individuals' bodies and hidden in areas of vehicles, like gas tanks, trunks, seats, and quarter panels, according to CBP."These are impressive results and no matter what is occurring in the country, CBP officers remain vigilant," said San Diego CBP Director of Field Operations, Pete Flores.
