HEALDSBURG, Calif. (AP) — If you're worried that wildfires might have created shortages of Northern California's 2019 cabernet sauvignon, or even just imparted it with an undesirable smoky flavor, you can relax. The wine is just fine. For now.Despite a late October blaze that raged through one of the world's best-known wine-growing regions. forcing evacuations in two mid-sized towns, wine production in Sonoma County escaped largely unscathed.Limerick Lane Wines, for instance, avoided serious damage despite flames that licked at two sides of its property in the Russian River Valley just south of Healdsburg. Limerick's grapes were already harvested, crushed and stored in tanks and barrels. The winery's sealed cellar prevented smoke damage to its inventory, said owner Jake Bilbro, although its tasting room now has an acrid smell."I have to thank the people who planted our vineyards and built our house 100 years ago," Bilbro said. "Our buildings are all surrounded by vineyards, and vineyards are excellent fire breaks."Overall, vintners estimate that the region lost only about five percent of its harvest to fire and smoke — not a perfect outcome, but better than in 2017, when wildfire struck with only about 90% of the harvest in. The remaining grapes weren't all lost, but that year's vintages were rumored to have a "smoky" taste, and winemakers were taking no chances this year.Many in Sonoma, a sprawling county larger than Rhode Island located about an hour north of San Francisco, say they're hoping that fires don't become the new normal. But with the smell of smoke lingers in the air and the charred hills serving as a reminder, they're also making plans in case they do.Fire season isn't over yet, of course, and the now largely contained Kincade fire did incinerate the historic Soda Rock Winery, although most vineyards sustained no damage and lost no production. But the region has suffered a precipitous drop in fall tourism, which could undermine the economic health of its wineries and hospitality industry alike.Bret Munselle lost about half of the young vines he had planted just two months before when a fire raged through the upper part of his ranch at Munselle Vineyards in Alexander Valley, between Healdsburg and Geyserville. The late-autumn rains that typically end fire season have started later in recent years, he said, although it's not yet clear whether that's also climate-related.Oddly enough, those same effects can help protect the grape crop by accelerating ripening of the fruit and reducing the chance that unexpectedly early rains might damage it.Wine researchers have suggested vineyards might need to adjust harvest times, evaluate what they plant, even possibly move to cooler areas over time.Few grape growers are dramatically changing their practices yet. No one is talking about closing up shop or moving elsewhere. But winemakers are tinkering anyway — and everyone is buying backup generators.Clay Mauritson of Mauritson Wines said he and his family are experimenting with different pruning methods to increase shade on the plants, although they don't see any need to shift to new growing areas."We don't want to be too dramatic or reactionary," he said. "We are going to take baby steps to make sure we're prepared for what comes down."Tourism, which is usually booming amid the fall colors and mild temperatures, has taken a serious blow. Evacuations of nearby Healdsburg and Windsor, along with planned blackouts by the region's utility, PG&E — plus, the widespread misperception that the vineyards themselves burned — led to a rash of cancellations for hotel, restaurant and tasting-room reservations.Joe Bartolomei, owner of the upscale boutique hotel Farmhouse Inn in Forestville, said he would normally be sold out this time of year. But on Nov. 1, his inn had only two of 25 rooms filled. He's trying to get the message out that the county businesses are intact and open for visitors.But, he said, "it's going to be a slow, gradual education."Visitor numbers had just started recovering from a similar drop-off following the 2017 fires, said Sonoma County Tourism president Clauda Vecchio.So the tourism bureau now plans to promote wine country as a spring destination rather than fall, and is devoting the bulk of its 0,000 advertising budget to that end. Health officials in Rockland, New York, say that a group who attended a recent party sparking a localized outbreak of coronavirus cases are not cooperating with officials.Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel told reporters on Wednesday that a subpoena will be issued in order to force the party attendees to comply with the county’s contact tracing efforts. Dr. Schnabel said that eight subpoenas in total will be issued.Health officials hope to be able to find out who those party attendees have been in contact with amid efforts to minimize the spread of the virus.Dr. Schnabel said that the host, who was symptomatic at the time of the party, infected seven others with the virus. All eight are in their 20s, she said.Dr. Schnabel said that health investigators have been hung up on by infected revelers, or allegedly been lied to.“They deny being at the party even though we have found their name from another party attendee, or a parent provides us with the information” she said. “Many do not answer their cellphones or call back. HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – Sitting in a classroom with a teacher and friends is what Ryan, a high school senior in North Carolina, misses.“He has mentioned how much he misses just being in the school,” said Ryan’s mom Dr. Jonna Bobzien.Ryan started virtual learning this week.This past school year, Bobzien said Ryan struggled with online learning.“It was very different,” she said. “It was asynchronous online, just a lot of watching pre-recorded information and he really struggled with that, because there is no sense of interaction, nothing really to hold the attention of the learner.”This academic year, however, he seems to be thriving.“This year, I find him, even though it’s only the first week, more excited,” said Bobzien. “His classes allow them to use avatars, so he can sit there and rock when he’s concentrating.”Ryan has autism and ADHD, so focusing his attention and sitting still for long periods can be difficult.Ryan is not unique. Many children, who are learning virtually are facing the same mundane challenge.“Just sitting in front of a computer listening to your teacher talk or watching a video can be a little less entertaining as far as value or attention-getting,” Bobzien said.Dr. Bobzien is not only a mom, but she also chairs the Communication Disorders and Special Ed Department at ODU. Additionally, she is an associate professor in special ed at the university.According to Bobzien, establishing a workspace for your child to call their own can make a difference.“Helping them to feel like they’re in that real classroom setting,” she said. “In a classroom, teachers are skilled at minimizing distraction…. When we’re at home, it can be more difficult.”Wearing headphones can help students block out distractions.Bobzien said it’s key to establish a routine and structure with some flexibility as parents navigate the role of mom and dad and teacher. She said it’s also essential to redirect a child’s attention rather than reprimand him.“Students with attention difficulties, also students with autism, they crave predictability and routine,” she said. “When you’re a virtual learner you have the opportunity to engage in some of those maybe unusual behaviors like rocking or spinning a pen that help you to focus without that sense of being pointed out.”Though Ryan’s senior year isn’t what he was expecting, there may be an upside to learning online for him and others who shy away from public attention.“With parents, may actually see, in some cases, improvements,” Bobzien said. “Sometimes, students who do have difficulties don’t like being under the spotlight as much.”Antoinette DelBel first reported this story at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2685
HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - A Virginia company is unveiling a brand new technology, with help from jellyfish, to help in the fight against COVID-19.“We're just pretty motivated by the fact that we're making an impact to open the economy, places back up safely,” Senseware CEO Dr. Serene Al-Momen told News 3.Senseware, a technology company based in northern Virginia, specializes in air monitoring.“We quickly realized that the primary concerns of transmissions are airborne transmission for the COVID-19 virus,” Al-Momen said.The technology the company is rolling out is a new pathogen-detecting monitoring system using specific antibodies and proteins from jellyfish that light up when coming in contact with COVID-19.“We're talking about having the results available within minutes, under five minutes,” she said. “If the virus is detected, we immediately in real-time with our cloud-based technology alert you. You see the threat, the detection on your phone. You get an email if you're an operator. You're able to quickly mitigate that issue.”Al-Momen told News 3 the product is in the final stages of third-party testing. FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — An employee of California State University, Fullerton was killed in a stabbing in a campus parking lot Monday in what police called a targeted attack, though they were not sure of a motive.The victim was in his late 50s and worked in international student admissions at the sprawling campus in Orange County, police Lt. Jon Radus said. He was not immediately identified by authorities.A witness who called 911 said the suspect fled on foot, Radus said. Police found the victim inside a car with multiple stab wounds, he said."We do not know motive at this point for what occurred," Radus told reporters. "We do not believe there is a random stabber."The school, which is part of the 23-campus California State University system, enrolled more than 39,000 students last year.
