SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For many San Diego children, having a bed is a luxury. Instead, they sleep on couches, with siblings, or even the floor. When 13-year-old Lilia Montiel learned about the problem, she wanted to help fix it. Montiel's dad is a speech and language pathologist who works at several schools, including Empower Charter School. While working there one day, he learned his student had suffered rat bites due to sleeping on the floor.“That really struck a chord in my heart and made me really sad," remembers Lilia. "I thought of a way I could maybe fix that problem and do it for a few different families.”She started ZZZs 4 Kidz and is now raising money to provide 1,000 beds to San Diego kids in need.On Wednesday Lilia got some help from Jerome's Furniture, which donated ten bunk and twin beds with mattresses.“Even though you're small or young, you don’t have to be big or an adult to make a difference in someone’s life," said Lilia. To donate to ZZZs 4 Kidz, click here. 1004

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time in 40 days, San Diego County has fallen below the state's County Monitoring List threshold for coronavirus case rate.San Diego County was placed on the list on July 3 after it crossed the state metric of 100 cases per 100,000 people over 14 days. Wednesday, the county reported a case rate of 94.1.The county will have to remain off the watch list for another three days to get off California's watch list and an additional 14 days in order for local schools grades 7th through 12th can return to in-person instruction. No other businesses are slated to be allowed to reopen after that 17-day window unless the state provides more guidance for business reopenings, according to the county.San Diego County reported 236 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, a 3% positive rate out of 7,339 reported tests. Six new deaths were also reported, including five women and one man who died between July 28 and Aug. 11. All of the victims had underlying conditions, county officials said. The county also reported two new community outbreaks, one in a grocery setting and one in a manufacturing setting. While the county's case rate has fallen, it continues to be high above its community outbreak threshold of seven in seven days. Currently, the county has 26 community outbreaks in a week. A community outbreak is three or more coronavirus cases in the same setting in people of different households in the past two weeks.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said of the drop in the county's case rate: "San Diegans should be proud of the progress we have made, but we have to recognize the goal is not just to get our cases down, it is to keep them down. We’ve seen progress because of a renewed focus and vigilance, and we need that same focus going forward." 1782

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Health providers in San Diego County will start receiving new training this week to better spot signs of domestic violence strangulation.Health professionals at all of the county's major health providers will take part in new training Wednesday, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said. Additionally, thousands of posters that read, "Only you decide what goes on your neck," will go up in clinics, urging victims to report strangulation. The ,000 campaign, called San Diego County Health CARES, was announced during Domestic Violence Awareness month. It is the latest effort to address strangulation crimes in San Diego County, which has seen prosecutions of strangulation-related felonies jump four-fold in the last six years."This initiative is another big step in fighting domestic violence," Stephan said. "We know that victims are often reluctant to report to police but will trust their healthcare provider, so this is an opportunity for early detection and intervention that could save lives."Over the last 22 years, strangulation accounted for 13 percent of domestic violence homicides in San Diego County, she said.In 2017, police agencies in San Diego County agreed to adopt a new protocol for responding to suspected strangulation cases in which officers now refer victims to forensic nurses for evaluation. The protocol is the first of its kind in California and among the first in the country, said Palomar Forensic Health Services director Michelle Shores. The change has had a significant impact on prosecutions, Stephan said. In 2015, there were 66 prosecutions for strangulation. In 2018, the number jumped to more than 250.In more than half of strangulation cases, there are no marks or physical signs of injury on the victim's neck, making detection more difficult, said San Diego County Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Tuteur. That makes it even more important that doctors know what kind of questions to ask patients and what other symptoms to identify.Symptoms of strangulation may include vision and hearing loss, lapses in memory, pain while swallowing, and vocal changes, Shores said. 2163
