Researchers in Germany have recently published a study finding that a small percentage of people have developed an addiction to shopping. The October 2019 study released in Comprehensive Psychiatry explores the addictive response to shopping. The study found that 1 in 20 of adults developed an addiction to shopping. The researchers dubbed the addiction as "buying-shopping disorder" (BSD), which "is characterized by extreme preoccupations with and craving for buying/shopping and by irresistible and identity-seeking urges to possess consumer goods."While the study looked at shopping more broadly, the researchers believe that the ability to shop online is feeding the addiction. "As e-commerce provides an important shopping environment, traditional BSD may migrate into the online retail market," the study states. "The internet offers a vast variety of shopping information and simultaneous access to many online stores, thereby meeting expectations for immediate reward, emotional enhancement and identity gain."To read more on the study, click 1065
Resolving to get healthier in 2019 is admirable. Elbowing through the mosh-pit gym crowds in January is impressive, if not pretty. Not using the gym at all by June, even after paying for a yearlong contract, is, well, disappointing. And it’s a waste of money, even if your intentions were good. After all, joining a gym seems like the answer to healthy resolutions, and maybe redemption for those fifth and sixth helpings of eggnog. Gyms are ready for this annual jolt of workout motivation — all you have to do is sign an annual contract.Annual contracts don’t seem so bad, but …Promotions and marketing aren’t all that make a yearlong financial commitment tempting.“There’s a weird way where we think if we’re spending money we’re accomplishing our goals,” says Kit Yarrow, consumer psychologist and author of “Decoding the New Consumer Mind.”“If we do anything, we feel like we’re taking a step toward our goal. And a lot of times, the easiest thing to do is 972
Rape between people who are not married has always been illegal. However, until 1975, every state in the country had a marital exception. A husband could legally rape his wife. It has only been since 1993 that all 50 states have had laws making marital rape a crime, but in many states, there are loopholes. Now, one lawmaker in Michigan is working to close the state's marital rape loophole. It started with a message on Twitter. A constituent wrote State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky asking if she knew there is a loophole for marital rape in certain circumstances. If you look at the law, the first thing you see is that you can be charged with criminal sexual conduct in Michigan – even if the victim is your legal spouse. However, there is a glaring exception. You can not be charged with criminal sexual conduct if you had sex with your spouse while they were mentally incapacitated. 888
Rescuers pulled people to safety and ferried them through fast-moving floodwaters in middle Oklahoma on Tuesday morning after severe storms swamped the area — and more severe weather will threaten a large portion of the central US as the day goes on.Floodwater closed parts of Interstate 40 in Oklahoma's Canadian County, just west of Oklahoma City, after storms hit late Monday and early Tuesday. In that county, high water was lapping up against homes in a rural area near the community of El Reno on Tuesday morning, and fire departments' swift water rescue teams were using boats to take residents to drier land. Also in the area, video from 656
Senate Republicans tallied enough votes Friday morning to block a largely Democratic-backed amendment that would require President Donald Trump to get congressional approval before striking Iran militarily.During an unusual Friday vote that commenced at 5 a.m. to meet various scheduling demands of the senators, Republicans hit the 41-vote mark, which means the Iran measure can't get the 60 votes it would need to advance.Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, cast the 41st vote. The vote may not be finalized for several hours because it is being held open for senators, including those Democrats who participated in the Democratic presidential debate Thursday night in Miami, to come to the chamber to vote.Democrats knew they couldn't win on this amendment but pressed to have the vote to get senators on the record about the issue.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.
