The impeachment process is one that isn’t used very often, but it’s been around since the birth of the U.S. Constitution.“It was an idea as a check on the abuse of political power,” said Norman Provizer, a professor of political science at Metropolitan State University of Denver.He said impeachment is like an indictment. It doesn't mean the president is automatically booted out of office. When a simple majority of the House of Representatives votes to impeach, the next step is a trial in the Senate. And that is illegal, you can’t do that,” Provizer said.Provizer said there was a lot of disagreement between Johnson and Congress during his term in the 1860s. Clinton’s impeachment more than a century later had little to do with Congress. “I did not have sexual relations with that woman," Clinton said at a White House press conference in 1998.Turns out Clinton did have an affair with a White House intern, despite denying it during testimony.“There is a thing about perjury — lying under oath. All of it’s surrounding sexual activities, if you will,” Provizer said.Impeachment isn’t only for presidents. In fact, Provizer said it’s mainly used to try and potentially remove federal judges.“It says in the constitution the president, the vice president and other civil officers," the professor said.Provizer said presidential impeachments are often most noteworthy because they come with dramatic storylines. He says people start to draw connections between different impeachment proceedings. For example, the partisan divide we’re facing now was seen during Nixon’s administration.“It looks like the Republicans are defending him, and the Democrats are going after him. I mean, that’s how it’s viewed — very partisan. But as it unfolds and more information comes out, basically, many Republicans drop their effort to defend him.”As of now, most of the Republican party has remained loyal to Trump. In the end, Provizer said all impeachment proceedings have been fundamentally the same. They simply deal with different subject matter.“If you give a government power, what do you also have to be concerned with? The ability to check that power," Provizer said. "You need both. The Los Angeles Police Department has identified and arrested a suspect in the shooting death of rapper Nipsey Hussle.Eric Holder, 29, was arrested for homicide, the LAPD announced on Tuesday.Hussle was shot Sunday near a clothing store he owned in Los Angeles. In a statement, police said Holder walked up to Hussle and two other men as they stood outside a business in a strip mall on West Slauson Boulevard. He fired multiple times at them and then ran to a nearby alley where a vehicle -- "driven by an unidentified female" -- was waiting for him, police said. Holder entered from the passenger side and the vehicle fled, authorities said.Hussle died in the shooting and the two other men were injured and transported to the hospital.Los Angeles Police had requested the public's assistance in capturing Holder. The grand jury's criminal investigation started by special counsel investigators is "continuing robustly," a federal prosecutor said Wednesday, even though Robert Mueller filed his report on Russian interference in the 2016 election with the Justice Department last week.In a federal court hearing about whether the name of the company and country that's been fighting a subpoena from Mueller since last summer should be revealed, Chief Judge Beryl Howell asked prosecutor David Goodhand, point-blank, if the grand jury investigation is over."No, it's continuing. I can say it's continuing robustly," said Goodhand, an assistant prosecutor in the DC US attorney office.There were no prosecutors from Mueller's office in court. The special counsel's office has handed over the subpoena case to the DC US attorney's office. It remains unclear what part of Mueller's investigation is ongoing and if more criminal charges could still come.The continuing work, even after Mueller declared his investigation had concluded, further raises questions about what was being investigated with few clues so far about what country it is or the company, which the special counsel has previously said is not a target of the investigation but has information needed by prosecutors.Attorney General William Barr wrote in his letter to Congress that several matters had been referred by Mueller to other federal prosecutor offices.The hearing was held to discuss whether the name of the company and other details could be made public.
