SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Latinas are bearing a disproportionately high burden from the COVID-19 pandemic in San Diego County, a local nonprofit and Latina elected officials said today as they shared data from the San Diego Association of Governments.According to Latina-focused nonprofit MANA de San Diego, this comes as Latino households already had lower pre-pandemic wages, less access to health care and job-related benefits. Latinas in particular have faced increased job losses and threats of economic insecurity, they said.Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas, a member of SANDAG's Board of Directors, shared that while Latinas comprise around 17% of the county's population, around 60% of that population is working in the three industries most impacted by job loss during the pandemic -- tourism, retail and education. Latinas account for 14% of total county employment, but 20% of employment in those sectors.Data from SANDAG paints a bleak picture in regard to Latinas during the pandemic. When compared to the white population, Hispanic populations are almost three times as likely to live in areas that have been highly impacted by COVID-19 and unemployment. Additionally, Hispanic residents account for a significant portion of essential workers, and many became unemployed due to temporary business closures as a result of COVID-19.A total of 70% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with above average unemployment, 49% in ZIP codes with above average COVID-19 cases and 42% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with both above average.More than 100,000 San Diegans have tested positive for the virus, and 57% of those have been Hispanic or Latino.``As the pandemic grows in severity and stay-at-home orders are strengthened, it is the county's Latina population that will continue to face a disproportionate amount of risk and negative impacts,'' a statement from MANA de San Diego said.A Harvard, NPR and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study also found 46% of Latino households have used up ``most or all'' of their savings during the pandemic, with an additional 15% reporting they had no savings before COVID-19 hit the United States.The same study found 66% of Latino households with children report serious problems caring for their children, including 36% who report serious problems keeping their children's education going.``MANA de San Diego will continue to do our part in creating upward social mobility for Latinas,'' said Inez Gonzalez Perezchia, MANA de San Diego's executive director. ``We will work with our elected officials joining us today and we welcome allies to join us as well. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled a traffic stop in Encanto Tuesday led officers on a 40-minute pursuit that ended with his arrest near Lake Hodges, authorities reported.The man refused to yield when San Diego police tried to pull him over for a traffic violation in the 6800 block of Akins Avenue shortly after 9 a.m., SDPD public-affairs Officer Michael Stirk said.The motorist drove off to the east toward Spring Valley, then entered state Route 125 and headed north, Stirk said.Reaching Santee, the man entered SR-52 and headed west, then merged onto northbound Interstate 15 when he got to the Miramar area.While passing through northern San Diego with SDPD and California Highway Patrol personnel tailing him and tracking his pursuit aboard a police helicopter, the driver managed to avoid running over several spike strips that CHP officers hurled onto the roadway in his path.After entering Escondido, however, the man finally pulled to a stop on the side of the freeway near Ninth Avenue and was taken into custody without further incident about 9:45 a.m., Stirk said.The arrestee's name was not immediately available. 1139

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Murder and other felony charges were filed Wednesday against a 20-year-old probationer who allegedly fired a gunshot toward his brother, missing him but inadvertently killing a next-door neighbor asleep in his bed.Manuula Save is accused in the Saturday morning death of Michael Walker, 38, who was shot about 1:45 a.m. by a bullet that traveled through a bedroom wall in the defendant's apartment and into the victim's unit in the 13400 block of Midland Road. Walker was hit once in the abdomen and died at a hospital about an hour later.Save faces life imprisonment if convicted of murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.RELATED: Man killed by stray bullet in Poway apartment complex, suspect arrestedDeputy District Attorney Kristie Nikoletich said the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument and physical fight between Save and his older brother. "The defendant retrieved a firearm and fired in the direction of his brother to scare him and show his brother that he wasn't scared of him," Nikoletich said. But that bullet ended up going through a wall and striking a sleeping neighbor, Michael Walker. His grieving widow, Christina was inside the courtroom Wednesday, crying throughout the proceedings. 10News spoke to her earlier this week. "I'm just seeing this hole in his stomach, and then I look over, and there's a hole in my wall," Christina Walker said on the phone. She said he was sleeping in the guest room that night, so his snoring would not wake her up — A move that would place him right in the path of that stray bullet, and kill him hours later. Save then allegedly hid the 9mm firearm, which he was not allowed to possess due to a previous hit-and-run conviction involving the death of an elderly woman, Nikoletich said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - NASA astronaut and UC San Diego graduate Kate Rubins arrived aboard the International Space Station Wednesday, where she and two Russian cosmonauts will conduct research over the next six months.Rubins, Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov launched from Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft and arrived at the station's Rassvet module at 1:48 a.m. PST following a two-orbit, three-hour flight, according to NASA.The trio joined Expedition 63 Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA and Roscosmos cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, who have been aboard the complex since April. Ryzhikov will become the commander when Expedition 64 begins Oct. 21 and Cassidy, Vagner and Ivanishin will depart for Earth.The spaceflight marks the second for Rubins and Ryzhikov and the first for Kud-Sverchkov, who will live and work aboard the outpost for six months, conducting research in technology development, Earth science, biology, human research and more. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An additional 10,000 households economically impacted by COVID-19 are able to apply for rent relief from San Diego County Tuesday, part of million county supervisors allocated for just such a purpose.County residents economically impacted by the pandemic could qualify for assistance of up to ,000 to pay for past-due or upcoming rent through the second wave of the Emergency Rental Assistance Program starting Tuesday.County leaders are anticipating awarding more than million in assistance to residents who applied during the first round of applications at the beginning of October, although details about when that money is expected are scarce.For the new round of funding, the county will review applications as they are received and will continue to take applications until funds are depleted. Those who apply will be able to check their application status online at any point in the process.To be eligible, households must be renting and have experienced a financial hardship directly related to COVID-19. This includes a loss or reduction of income or an increase in medical expenses.Households must also fall under 60% of the area median income to qualify. For example, to be eligible, a single-person household can earn up to ,540 and a four-person household can earn up to ,300.
