SHENZHEN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Saturday that the ARATS will offer more support to help Taiwan businessmen weather through the financial crisis. Chen said this at a symposium here Saturday on the development of Taiwan companies amid the financial crisis. According to the Taipei World Trade Center, the second purchase delegation from the mainland had shown intention to purchase more than 600 million U.S. dollars worth of goods from Taiwan companies in the coming 12 months during a weeklong visit to the island, mainly involving food, drinks, garments and daily necessities. "Under the current circumstances, we should positively seek more cooperation opportunities to overcome the hardships," said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). The mainland will send the third procurement delegation to the island in August, focusing on the island's chemical industry, electronic products and automobiles. More than 50 representatives from the mainland-based Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Taiwan-based "Chinese National Federation of Industries" and other organizations attended the symposium, which was jointly held by the ARATS and the SEF.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed at 3,145.16 points, up 64.6 points, or 2.1 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 12,991.06 points, up 330.51 points, or 2.61 percent. Total turnover expanded to 280.53 billion yuan (41.07 billion U.S. dollars) from 268.78 billion yuan on the previous trading day. Winners outnumbered losers by 795 to 67 in Shanghai and 667 to 74 in Shenzhen. MOSCOW, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev on Thursday and the two sides pledged to enhance bilateral cooperation. Dai said the China-Russia relations enjoy good momentum as the two countries celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. China, Dai said, is willing to work with Russia to boost mutual political trust, strengthen pragmatic cooperation and deepen strategic collaboration. He said China will join hands with Russia in dealing with the global financial crisis and push for a more just and rational international order. Patrushev, for his part, said the two countries now enjoy close strategic cooperation. TOKYO, May 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Shanghai has donated 50,000 face masks to Osaka of Japan where a large number of new-flu infections is reported. The masks arrived at Osaka, Shanghai's "sister city" on Wednesday and will be distributed to local medial facilities in both Osaka city and Osaka prefecture. They are expected to ease the region's shortage of face masks due to the abrupt outbreak of A/H1N1 flu. Shanghai is the third Chinese city to donate masks to Japan. Earlier, northern city of Tianjin and the southern Guangdong Province also donated masks to their "sister" cities or prefectures in Japan, Kobe city and Hyogo Prefecture respectively. The number of new-flu infections in Japan came to 364 in 10 prefectures as of Wednesday afternoon, with Wakayama Prefecture joining other western Japan prefectures in reporting an outbreak. The newly confirmed infection in Wakayama city government is a male company employee in his late 20s. Earlier Wednesday, two children in central Japan's Shizuoka city also were confirmed infected with the flu.
HONG KONG, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), the sole Renminbi (RMB) clearing bank in Hong Kong, announced here Saturday that it will launch RMB clearing services for trade settlement starting from Monday. BOCHK said it had singed a clearing agreement with the People's Bank of China in relation to RMB business, and will invite banks and other financial institutions participating in trade settlement to sign a new clearing and settlement agreement. On Wednesday, the People's Bank of China and other departments on the mainland jointly announced the "Administrative Rules on Pilot Program of Renminbi Settlement of Cross-Border Trade Transactions", allowing RMB settlement of cross-border trade transactions for the first time. "The initiation of the Pilot Program is of particular significance. It will increase the source channels and the usage of RMB funds," said He Guangbei, vice chairman and chief executive of BOCHK. Under the Pilot Program, enterprises will also have greater flexibility in selecting the settlement currency of cross-border trade transactions as well as increasing their capability to hedge exchange risk, minimize costs, and boost the efficiency and profitability of cross-border trade transactions, he said. BOCHK, as a participating bank of RMB business, will take the lead in launching a wide spectrum of RMB trade settlement and finance services for its corporate customers to conduct RMB- denominated trade transactions such as remittances, collections and L/C services between Hong Kong and Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan and Zhuhai, said the vice chairman.
