UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday voiced its support to the efforts to counter Somali piracy in accordance with the international law and the relevant Security Council resolutions.The statement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on piracy off the Somali coast. The 15-nation Council began the meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss a report by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on how to prosecute and imprison Somali pirates."China supports the activities carried out to combat Somali piracy in accordance with the international law and the resolutions of the Security Council," Li said. "At present, naval operations of the countries concerned to combat piracy and to protect navigation have played a very positive role in safeguarding the safety of international navigation.""At the same time, the issue of how to prosecute the pirates caught has come to the fore," he said. BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- China issued an orange alert on Thursday for wave surges, the second highest level warning, forecasting that Typhoon Conson may reach land Friday on the southeast coast of China' s Hainan province.The National Marine Environment Forecast Center warned of a 6-metre wave surge in the middle and the north of the South China Sea from Thursday night through Friday.Meanwhile, warnings were also issued for a possible 5-metre wave surge off the east shore of Hainan province and a 3-metre wave surge off the west shore of Guangdong province and the southern coast of Hainan.The Center also issued a yellow-level alert for a storm surge which might affect Guangdong and Hainan province.The center suggested local governments gear up for a disaster response.Conson is currently wreaking havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 26 people and injuring 14 others as of Thursday.

NANCHANG, July 31 (Xinhua) - More cities, counties and townships in China have implemented community correction programs instead of imprisoning not-serious offenders, according to a statement released Friday after a meeting held by the Ministry of Justice in eastern China' s Jiangxi Province.In the first half of 2010, the community correction programs were implemented in four more prefecture-level cities, 84 more counties and city districts, and 2,858 more townships and urban communities, it said.That means the programs are now in 222 prefecture-level cities, 1,420 counties and city districts, and 17,981 townships and urban communities.Further, ten provinces and municipalities, including Beijing and Shanghai, have the programs in all their townships and urban communities.About 486,000 offenders have been committed to community correction programs nationwide, up from 350,000 at the end of 2009.Only 0.2 percent of them committed offences again while they were attending the correction program, the statement said.
