SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)- As San Diego county's COVID-19 cases continue to climb, restaurant owners hope outdoor dining isn't banned next. Los Angeles County shut down outdoor dining last Wednesday for a minimum of three weeks due to a surge in infection rates.Piero Tarantino owns Parioli Italian Bistro on Highway 101 in Solana Beach.He's down to just two employees, with the restaurant open only four days a week."We have a problem retaining employees cause we have to cut their hours since we don't have a lot of business, and we have to close a few days cause there are not enough sales to even pay one employee," said Tarantino.He says outdoor dining was going well in the summer, but it's a struggle now that cooler weather is here even when using heaters. "It's not comfortable cause you have heat coming from one side, but then the rest of your body is cold," said Tarantino.Restaurants across the country are trying to continue with outdoor dining even as the weather gets cold. Some owners are getting creative using everything from igloos, to individual pods, to tents and canopies.Dr. Anne Rimoin is an epidemiologist at UCLA. She said eating outside is only safe if you are truly outside."The issue is it needs to be completely open, wide open, ventilation if you have a roof, if you have sides, that's not outdoors, outdoors means in the open air," said Dr. Rimoin. (KGTV) - Despite Governor Gavin Newsom's orders, students at a private school in Spring Valley are scheduled to return to class in a few weeks.When Heartland Christian Homeschool Center begins its school year on Sept. 1, it will include in-school learning. Classified as a private school, the pre-kindergarten-to-12th grade school combines homeschooling with several days of in-person instruction every week.The plans come despite the governor’s orders banning in-school classes for counties still on the watch list. Right now, San Diego County remains on that list.Principal Lynda Hansen told ABC 10news, it's "important" for kids to be back in class, adding her school is "following all CDC guidelines."The state is allowing elementary schools to apply for waivers to the COVID-19 orders. Hansen says she'll apply for the waiver, but it likely won't affect her decision to open.The school’s COVID-19 section does list its precautions, including stepped-up disinfecting, encouraging social distancing, and masks for staff when close to students. Masks will not be mandatory for students.The mask issue is a point of concern for students at another private school with similar plans. Last week, ABC 10News reported on Foothills Christian Middle School in El Cajon.A letter sent to parents spelled out reopening plans in September, including masks being optional. That led to frustration for parents who emailed ABC 10News. The school cited a lack of evidence that masks prevent COVID-19 transmission in children.A county spokesperson says the have several tools for private schools out of compliance, beginning with education and on-site visits. PETERSBURG, Florida — Back in 2016, a dog owner received a note saying, "Shut your dog up or we will."Days later, Annabelle, a three-year-old brindle pitbull terrier mix, nearly died from kidney failure.The owner says the kidney failure was caused by wet dog food laced with Acetaminophen, known best as Tylenol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Rob McCahan says he believes the contaminated food was tossed into his yard from the alley behind his home on 44th Avenue North in St. Pete.The dog found and ate the contaminated food before the owner realized there was a bag there at all.It happened again in March 2018, and this time, Annabelle died."She was the most lovable dog in the world," says McCahan, whose cell phone is filled with photos of his beloved dog, who he rescued from a local shelter.She died after several days in the animal hospital."These people are sick. I'm just kind of confused right now. Trying to figure out who did it," adds McCahan.The second poisoning coincided with a second note left on his door that read in part: "Shut him up. Your neighbors are tired of it."McCahan says Annabelle didn't bark too much and certainly didn't bark any more than his neighbors' dogs.Just a few houses down from McCahan's, on the 700 block of 44th Avenue NE in the North East Park community of St. Pete, another dog apparently died in the exact same manner.A brown bag with poisoned food was thrown into another yard, killing an otherwise perfectly-healthy 8-year-old golden retriever, according to the pet's owner.This pet owner shared her devastating experience on social media online with her neighbors, saying their dog died this past Monday, and wanted to warn others that someone was doing this."I'm afraid for animals," she writes, adding, "My family was devastated and are still recovering. Please be aware. We're upgrading security."St. Pete Police were out in the neighborhood again Friday trying to confirm this second report of a dog's death, but have not yet been able to.Another neighbor on the same 700 block of 44th Avenue NE tells ABC Action News that his cat was found hanged about 8 months ago.  A woman who lives on nearby 43rd Avenue NE tells St. Pete Police that she has received similarly-threatening letters recently, but her pets are doing okay. Special counsel Robert Mueller's team has so far discussed with President Donald Trump's lawyers four main topics they want to talk about with the President.According to two sources, the areas that the special counsel investigators have indicated they want to pursue with Trump are the President's role in crafting a statement abroad Air Force One that miscast Donald Trump Jr.'s campaign June 2016 meeting with Russians in Trump Tower, the circumstances surrounding that Trump Tower meeting as well as the firings of FBI Director James Comey and national security adviser Michael Flynn.One of the sources said the bulk of the topics conveyed surround the President's actions with the Comey and Flynn firings.The topics are not the extent of Mueller's interest, but, based on discussions between the two sides, they represent significant areas of focus so far for a Trump interview.CNN previously reported that after presenting some topics weeks ago, Mueller's team got more granular in a face-to-face meeting. The two sides are still discussing a potential interview and other topics include Attorney General Jeff Sessions' involvement in Comey's firing as well as the President's knowledge of Flynn's phone calls with the Russian ambassador.A source familiar with the matter says the President's legal team has created dozens of potential questions Mueller's team could ask in an interview based off the topics that have been conveyed verbally. Both sides could come to terms on whether there will be a sit-down interview in the coming weeks, according to a source familiar with the matter.The focus on Trump himself in Mueller's pursuits has alarmed and angered the President, who adhered to a legal strategy of holding back set by his attorney John Dowd and White House special counsel Ty Cobb, who have said for months the investigation was likely to conclude soon. On Twitter Wednesday, the President pointed to Alan Dershowitz, the Harvard Law professor, who questioned the appointment of a special counsel.The President called the investigation a "witch hunt" earlier in the week.As the investigation seems to be intensifying, the President, according to multiple sources, is convinced he needs to take the reins of his own legal strategy. His recent pushes include the hiring of attorney Joe diGenova and overtures made to other lawyers like former Solicitor General Ted Olson, who declined to take a job this week.A source familiar with the matter said the legal team could add more lawyers as they enter "the next phase" of deciding what to do about a potential interview between Mueller's team and the President.Trump also continues to speak regularly with Marc Kasowitz, his longtime lawyer who stepped back from leading the team months ago but remains involved.Kasowitz has long recommended that Trump take a more aggressive posture toward the Mueller investigation. That strategy was on the backburner as Dowd and Cobb worked with Mueller. Now that has all changed, as the President has reverted to his initial strategy to attack. An experienced cable news commentator, diGenova shares the President's view that the FBI and the Department of Justice have waged a corrupt battle against him.Trump's shift to managing his own legal strategy has distressed some of his lawyers. According to two sources, Trump encouraged Dowd to speak out.The President's lawyers would not be surprised if Cobb left his post, since he has essentially completed his tasks of providing witnesses for interviews and documents to Mueller, sources said. But Cobb has made it known that he would like to stay through the President's interview, if there is one.Yet Mueller's federal grand jury in Washington continues to meet weekly or more often to review evidence and hear testimony, and has even welcomed at least two witnesses in past weeks, former Trump campaign adviser Sam Nunberg and foreign policy expert George Nader, who attended meetings between foreign officials and Trump's advisers during the campaign and presidential transition. 5586
