WHAT HAPPENED:The U.S. Postal Service says it can’t meet a federal judge’s order to sweep processing centers for undelivered mail-in ballots. It is arguing that doing so would be disruptive to its Election Day operations and that it had “physical and operational limitations.”THE SIGNIFICANCE:Disputes about mail ballots, particularly those received after Election Day, could be the fuel for court fights over election results in some states.THE BACKGROUND:U.S. District Judge Emmet G. The agency has disputed the accuracy of the figure, saying it has pushed to ensure same-day local delivery of ballots by circumventing certain processing steps entirely, leaving them without the final delivery scan.WHAT’S NEXT:Sullivan had given the agency until Tuesday afternoon to search 27 facilities in several battleground areas for outstanding ballots and send out those votes immediately.The Postal Service said it had already conducted rounds of morning checks at all its processing hubs. Further, the agency said has been performing daily reviews of all 220 facilities handling election mail and planned another sweep hours before polling places closed Tuesday.The judge accepted the agency’s response but set a Wednesday hearing “to discuss the apparent lack of compliance with the court’s order.” 1955

When Brooke Harrison picked up her backpack Sunday during orientation day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, there were two things different about it. The fact that my backpack was so close to me is really mind blowing,” Brooke said.It was left in her freshman classroom where five classmates were shot. Three of them died: Alyssa Alhadeff, Alex Schachter and Alaina Petty. Seventeen people died in total. “We know how lucky we are,” said Brooke’s mom, Denise Harrison. “From the stories we already heard in the classroom, we go pick up the backpack we saw this. Everyday, we’re saying to ourselves, we’re so lucky.”On Wednesday, Brooke and the student body return to campus.“It’s going to be sad because I’m going to remember the fact that three of my classmates won’t be able to go back to school and that three of them won’t be able to see their friends and see that everyone is okay,” Brooke said. Her parents aren’t worried about Wednesday or the next day. They know security will be tight when they return, but beyond that there's uncertainty.“One of the greater concerns that we have is, what happens next?” said Robert Harrison, Brooke’s dad. “When the news cycle ended and six months have gone by, what actions will have been taken to ensure this doesn’t ever happen again? At this school or any other.” For starters, they want more armed school resource officers and a review of code red protocol. “To give ourselves as parents, to give us the ability to know when you drop your kid off, they’re going to be safe,” Harrison said. On top of the friends they lost, they lost their innocence. Every hug and every “I love you” means more now. “Time just feels more precious now. It feels like we have to reaffirm that. I know they love me, and I know I love them, but it feels like we need to say it more now,” Brooke said. Brooke’s parents have been through tragedy before. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Last Friday was a day for the history books at the Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Station 65.For the first time, it was staffed by a shift consisting of all women."Station 65 on that day, from the top down, captain, driver, firefighter, the rescue lieutenant, the paramedic, every single person was female that day on that shift," Deputy Chief James Ippolito said.The proof is in the picture, which featured Fire Medic Kelsey Krzywada side by side with her female colleagues. She is the youngest woman in the photo, whose ages range from 20 to 50. She said it didn't take her long to find her calling"I was always interested in the medical field so medical field and something super active to help people it seemed like a perfect fit," Krzywada said.She admits that in a male-dominated field, the road wasn't easy."Fire school was definitely really hard. I'm always the smallest one, smallest height, smallest weight. It's hard to keep up with the boys. I trained as hard as I could," Krzywada said.Lucky for her, there were other women before her, like Rescue Lt. Krystyna Krakowski, to help pave the way.Krakowski understood the impact of an all-female crew, even if for one shift. "We just thought women empowerment, girl power, how fun to have five women at the same station. It was a great day," Krakowski said.However, it was also a sad day after the death of a gender equality icon."It also happened on a day that Justice Ginsburg passed away as well," Ippolito said.As Ginsburg famously said, "Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you."According to Krakowski, it's already working for people like her daughter: a college student and a member of the Palm Beach Ocean Rescue."Women can do the same thing men can do," said Krakowski. WICKENBURG, AZ - A woman was found nearly a week after crashing her car near Wickenburg, Arizona earlier this month, officials say.According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a 53-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle along US-60 near milepost 117 on October 12. Her vehicle reportedly went through a fence, dropped 50 feet and landed in a mesquite tree, suspended over the ground. Six days later, an ADOT worker and rancher noticed the broken fence while trying to corral a cow, and saw the vehicle lodged in the tree. Emergency crews went to the scene and found the vehicle empty. Human tracks from the car led officials toward the Hassayampa riverbed where, 500 yards down, a severely dehydrated woman was found with serious injuries. She told officials that she stayed in the car for several days before climbing out and went toward the railroad tracks hoping someone would find her, however, she didn’t make it that far due to her injuries.      A medical helicopter was called and took her to the hospital for treatment.Officials did not go into further detail about the woman's injuries or the cause of the crash. “The diligence of the ADOT crew and teamwork of everyone involved is exemplary and to be commended. Due to their outstanding efforts, this woman’s life was saved," DPS Director Colonel Frank Milstead said in a media release.  1424

But professional school photos are either delayed or looking a little different this year because of the pandemic."It's very different. One of the things is we had a lot of schools that hadn't even started back yet, but a lot that have come back have pushed back their start date," explained Erin Middleton, the manager of operations for BPI Photography in Georgia.Middleton says their company is working closely with schools to safely photograph students who are back in-person in the classroom and accommodate those who aren't. BPI Photography says it first works with schools--with social distancing and masks in mind--to take photos of students who are at the school."Then, we actually create a report that is a not-photographed report, and on that not-photographed report would be your students that are face-to-face that didn’t make it on the original picture day,” Middleton explained. “But we also are capturing our virtual students on the absentee day which is like a make-up or retake day.”Middeton says sometimes the photos for virtual students take place after school hours. The company says they are doing everything they can to accommodate schools and families during this unprecedented time. A time some people are wanting to remember in their school picture.
