As we head into college football and NFL season, fans across the country will now be able to do something for the first time: legally bet on games. Indiana is the latest state making it a reality on Sunday, and there are more places following suit. Lou’s City Bar in Washington, D.C. is getting ready for a busy weekend as football season gets underway. Manager Mark Helliwell is working on a new way to bring in more customers: legal sports betting.“We’re trying to do everything we can to create interest,” he says. “If we can turn this place into a little Caesar’s Palace on Saturday and Sundays so people don’t have go to Vegas.”He applied for a license that will allow customers to bet on games inside his bar and just posted the permit.“Put it up last night and has to stay up for 30 days before our hearing,” he explains. “Our hearing’s in October.”Legalized sports betting is quickly moving across the country. In addition to D.C., several other states either already have sports betting or it will become legal when new laws take effect over the next several months.“Right now, there are only eight states that haven’t either legalized sports gambling or don’t have a bill to legalize sports gambling,” says attorney George Calhoun. Calhoun is one of the attorneys who helped convince the US Supreme Court last year to allow states other than Nevada to legalize sports betting, which he says will help protect gamblers.“They know they’re doing something that’s legal, they’re gonna get the protection,” Calhoun says. “If they have a problem, they’re gonna have access to the courts and law enforcement and they’re gonna have certainty if they win a bet they’re gonna get paid.”According to the American Gaming Association, in the states that now allow sports betting, gamblers have wagered more than billion since it became legal. 1855

As President Donald Trump moves forward with plans to build additional physical barriers along the southern border, his administration will have to contend with a slew of lawsuits challenging the national emergency declaration allowing him, in part, to do so.So far, at least four lawsuits have been filed challenging the declaration. The argument at the core of each lawsuit is similar: Trump exceeded his authority and circumvented Congress in an attempt to achieve his signature campaign promise for an emergency that, plaintiffs argue, doesn't exist. Here's a rundown of the lawsuits:State of California et al. vs. Trump et al. Plaintiffs: 16 states, led by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. The lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction to halt the President's declaration. The complaint accuses Trump of carrying out an "unconstitutional and unlawful scheme," and describes how states "stand to lose millions in federal funding" and could "cause damage to their economies."The complaint includes Trump's remark that he didn't need to declare the emergency.Attorneys general from Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Virginia joined California in the lawsuit. All states, except Maryland, are led by Democratic governors.Location: Northern District of California.Judge: Elizabeth D. Laporte, Clinton appointee.Status: Filed.Center for Biological Diversity et al. vs. Trump et al. Plaintiffs: The Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife and Animal Legal Defense Fund. The 1612

As of 5 p.m.. ET on Thursday, Hurricane Dorian was holding steady with 85 mph winds in the Atlantic Ocean. Forecast models project the storm could become a dangerous Category 4 hurricane before it reaches land. The storm is slowing its approach to the east coast of Florida and is gaining intensity. The forecast models are mostly consistent Thursday morning. All of the east coast of Florida remains in the cone with Dorian as a Category 4 hurricane moving in along Florida’s coast on Monday morning. The one difference is that the GFS (American Model) takes a weaker Dorian farther north towards Jacksonville.Landfall somewhere between south Georgia and the Florida Keys looks likely on Monday, but the storm may be moving so slowly that impacts could linger into Tuesday. The forecast is for the storm to intensify steadily into a Category 2 hurricane, and then a category 3 during the weekend. The storm is moving toward the northwest at about 13 mph and this general motion is expected to continue through Friday.Florida 1034

AURORA, Colo. – One of the deans of instruction at Aurora West College Preparatory Academy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of carrying a weapon on school grounds and carrying a concealed weapon.Tushar Rae, 30, was still jailed in Denver Thursday afternoon on a 0,000 bond following his arrest stemming from the case out of Arapahoe County, according to court records.Carrying a weapon on school grounds is a class 6 felony while carrying a concealed weapon is a class 2 misdemeanor in Colorado.According to an informed source with knowledge of the investigation, arresting documents detail a tense confrontation between the school's principal and Rae before his arrest. The documents show Principal Taisiya “Taya” Tselolikhina received a text at around 2 p.m. Wednesday from Rae, telling her to “meet in the office” after the dean of instruction didn’t show up to school the whole day and didn't inform anyone he was going to be absent.Once in the office, Rae reportedly placed a gun on a counter and said, “Try and f—k with me. You shouldn’t have said what you said. I don’t want to hurt you. I’m going to hurt all the people around you.”The documents also stated Rae then said he was going to “shoot the kneecaps off two other people” before asking the principal what she was going to do about it."I came prepared,” Rae allegedly told Tselolikhina before he patted his pocket adding that “he had two extra rounds.”The arresting documents show Rae then told the principal to walk away or he would “shoot the next person outside the door.”The documents then state two students were outside the office and the school was placed on lockdown.Aurora police tweeted Wednesday that West Middle School was on lockdown because of a threat of an armed party in the area. The department later tweeted that a suspect was taken into custody by Denver police. But communications made to parents following the incident tell a different story about the lockdown.A call from the principal made to parents on Wednesday stated that Aurora Public School officials and Aurora Police Department investigated a possible threat at the school and that “there were rumors of an armed individual in the area” – hours after the district, school administrators and the school principal were all well aware Rae was on campus allegedly armed with a gun and reportedly making threats.A second call from the school on Thursday afternoon stated that after school officials learned about the allegations, “we promptly placed the employee on administrative leave."Rae, who remains is jail, is not allowed on school grounds pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. 2654

An international airport on the Bahamas' northernmost island was completely underwater on Monday following heavy rain from Hurricane Dorian.Vision shot by Bahamas Member of Parliament Iram Lewis showed a current of water passing the flooded Grand Bahama International Airport."It's very dangerous hurricane as you can see, the wind is pounding, we're still pretty much in harm's way," Lewis says. "We're getting a lot of distress calls. Persons needing rescued, needing to be rescued, but we cannot get to them right now, so we ask persons on higher ground to just hold their positions as best as they can. Find the highest place in their homes, because as it is right now, there's very little the rescue teams can do and if you look, the wind is gusting at about (indistinct) miles an hour, it's just terrible. I am on higher ground. I wish there were more here with me, but of course, it is extremely dangerous. I have never seen anything like this before in my entire life."In another social media post, Lewis said the nation would need "a lot of support" after the Hurricane passes.Lewis added that news and information was "limited."Dorian weakened to a Category 3 hurricane on Tuesday morning as it continued to batter the Bahamas."I pray that God is doing, what only God can, by extending his grace and mercy and by saving lives," Lewis says. "We don't mind the properties, we're just hope that lives will be saved. But as you can tell, we are going to need a lot, a lot of support, after this hurricane is over. And as it is right now we don't even know... we cannot get a weather report, because the television is off. News, information is very limited."The system recorded winds of 185 miles per hour (295 kilometres per hour) when it made landfall on Abaco Island on Sunday. 1797
