SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Law enforcement agencies in San Diego County have a new tool in the fight against child predators: Southern California’s first electronics-sniffing dog. Willow, a 2-year-old yellow Labrador, is trained to sniff out the chemical used to coat all kinds of electronic storage media, including microSD cards, thumb drives, hard drives, cell phones and tablets.She works in partnership with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.“Our whole goal with ICAC is to save kids,” said Willow’s handler Ron Burleson. “If they’ve got any homemade images, there’s a kid out there that needs to be rescued, needs to be found. The breakthrough came after Connecticut State Police chemist Dr. Jack Hubball discovered that all media with a circuit board -- like hard drives, thumb drives and SD cards -- is covered with a chemical to prevent overheating called triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO). Once trained, dogs will sniff out the chemical for a reward. But painstaking work right here in San Diego is bringing the world ever closer to ending malaria."After you've been doing it for a while you get a little bit tired," said PhD student Madeline Luth, as she works over a microscope, "You're hands get a little bit shaky."She's part of a research team at UC San Diego involved in tedious, precise work."I'm using my syringe here to separate out a single mosquito," she said, "to isolate the thorax which contains all of the malaria parasites." Malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes; making the insect the deadliest organism on the planet -second only to humans. Millions of people -primarily in poor parts of the world like Africa- are made sick by the parasite every year. And hundreds of thousands die."What we're trying to do is interrupt the process so the infection never takes hold in your liver.," said Dr. Elizabeth Winzeler, who heads up the research team at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. "So you never develop any symptoms of the disease".Dr. Winzeler says here team has tested more than a half million compounds against the parasite. And is now about to release hundreds of promising mixtures to researchers around the world. It's the highest since Memorial Day 2014 when the average hit .65 a gallon, according to AAA.In California — one of 14 states above a gallon — drivers will have it the worst in the U.S. with an average of .71 a gallon.GAS PRICE MAP: Find the cheapest gasoline near you and around San DiegoSan Diego's local prices mimic the state's trend. A year ago the average for a gallon of gas in the county was about .03, compared to about .73 a gallon today.For the week ending on May 11, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported gas stocks fell by about 200,000 barrels to 29.7 million barrels.However, inventory levels are 600,000 stronger than this time last year.
