BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some 53.2 million people hit the roads in China on Wednesday, the third day of the "golden week", said a Ministry of Transport (MOT) spokesman.     Although that figure was an increase of 5.1 percent year-on-year, it was 4.2 percent lower than Tuesday's 55.5 million, because most travelers began their journey in the first two days of the holiday, he said.     The "golden week" National Day holiday this year runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.     The spokesman said 740,000 medium-sized and large vehicles were used to move travelers around the country on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's 760,000 vehicles. TIANJIN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged Tianjin Municipality in north China to step up opening and reform of its Binhai New Area.     Wen made the remark during his inspection tour in the coastal municipality on the sidelines of the 2008 Summer Davos Forum which was held here on Saturday and Sunday. In all, it is 2,270 square km and has a population of 1.4 million.     Lying between China's capital and the Bohai Gulf, the area has been decided by the State Council, or the Cabinet, to be one of the key economic powers in the country.     Taking an intercity high-speed railway shuttle from Beijing, the Premier asked the administrators of the shuttle line to provide a safe, fast and convenient service for people living in the two cities.     After arriving at the Binhai New Area, Premier Wen inspected some industry zones near the port. He was accompanied by Tianjin's Communist Party chief Zhang Gaoli.     Wen attended an opening ceremony for an assembly factory of the Airbus A320 model in the area.     "The Binhai New Area should take the advantages of various economic policies given by the central government and constantly improve its abilities of innovation and international competition," said the premier.     During his visit to the city, Wen also went to local households to convey his greetings of the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     When visiting a supermarket in the old community of Tianjin, Premier Wen asked the supermarket to ensure the quality of the products on sale.     He also went to a children's hospital where many parents sent their babies to have medical examinations in lieu of the toxic milk scandal.     The premier urged doctors in the hospital to carefully examine every child and to set parent's hearts to rest.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday reaffirmed its resolve to keep its economy on track amid the global financial turmoil.     In a meeting with visiting U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel, Vice Premier Wang Qishan said the financial crisis, triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, had exerted a grave impact on the global financial market. They should work more closely on economy, trade, investment, energy, environment and high-tech.     He also urged the United States to observe the three joint communiques, refrain from anything harmful to bilateral ties and the stability of the Taiwan Straits, so as to ensure the sound and steady progress of bilateral constructive cooperation.     As all nations were becoming more connected, Hagel, a Republican senator from Nebraska, said the stronger cooperation between the United States and China would help ensure world financial and economic stability.

BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao inspected the southern province of Hainan before attending the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) opening on Saturday.     The forum, April 11-13, is a platform for high-level interaction between leaders from Asia and the world. Boao has been the permanent venue of the annual regional economic forum since 2001.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, discussed reform and development issues with local officials and visited with a public made up of various ethnic groups during the inspection tour that started on Monday.     The island province marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Hainan special economic zone (SEZ) later this month. Hu visited an exhibition marking the anniversary at the provincial museum.     "Over the past two decades, Hainan's economic and social development has made a remarkable progress. The appearance of cities and villages has undergone profound changes. Practice shows the policy of setting up SEZ in Hainan is completely correct," said the president.
