OTTAWA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The leader of World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan said in Canada on Monday that countries must make the health of women and children their highest priority.Speaking at a luncheon in Gatineau, Quebec, Chan said that maternal and infant health is the most pressing public health issue in the world.She made the remarks just hours after WHO announced Chan was the only candidate for the position on WHO director-general when Chan's appointment expires next year.An executive board meeting in Geneva between Jan. 16 and 23 will decide whether to put the name forward to the WHO Assembly in May, which would make the final decision regarding the appointment.Chan, a former health chief in China's Hong Kong, was elected director-general of the WHO in Nov. 2006.Before her tenure with WHO, Chan was head of public health in Hong Kong, where she managed the city's response to the world's first outbreak of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus and an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).Speaking in Gatineau, Chan, who earned her medical degree in Canada, said that she never expected to rise to such a lofty position."I just wanted to be a doctor. I just wanted to take care of women and children. When I was studying in Canada, I thought I would get married and have children. I never guessed I'd do anything like head the World Health Organization," she said.She said that she will continue to focus the WHO's attention on mothers and young children.Chan said that it's difficult to know how many mothers and young children die of preventable diseases, since more than 80 countries don't keep accurate death records, but she said that millions of children under five years of age are dying.Millions more are growing up physically and mentally stunted because of poor nutrition and medical care, she added."Without proper nutrition, the stunting we are seeing is horrific," she said. Unless babies have good food, including being breast-fed as infants, they grow up physically and mentally under-developed, Chan said."The first few years of a child's life are make or break," she said.Chan and the WHO held a meeting of the Expert Panel on Maternal and Child Health in Canada from Nov. 18 to Nov. 21. The panel was established by the United Nations Commission on Information and Accountability for Women's and Children's Health Report. At the invitation of the WHO, the Commission was co-chaired by Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the President of Tanzania, Dr. Jakaya Kikwete.Chan says she's hopeful funding from developed nations will continue to expand, despite the debt crisis facing many of them. The situation resembles the 1970s, with spikes in energy and food prices along with cuts to national budgets to restrain debt.Chan said she is relieved the International Monetary Fund will not press for public health cuts in countries that are struggling with debt.Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation who is responsible for Canada's official aid affairs, delivered remarks at the luncheon on improving the health of children and mothers locally and globally."I am particularly proud of the strong partnership between the WHO and Canada in advancing global health, and working towards improvements that will help us achieve our shared goals," she said.Last Friday, Oda announced 25 new initiatives to further Canada 's support to 23 projects in Africa concerning Children and Youth, Food Security and Sustainable Economic Growth.Seven of these are multi-country projects supporting efforts to prevent the mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, further improving child health, or increasing the capacity of African Regional Technical Centres. LAS VEGAS, the United States, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- NVIDIA, the computer chip manufacturer best known for its high performance graphics processors, is looking to make further inroads with the automobile industry by integrating its new Tegra 3 mobile processors in upcoming vehicle models.At the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), NVIDIA and Audi announced that all models from the German auto manufacturer in 2013 will use Tegra 3 quad-core processors to power their in-car digital systems.These processors, which are traditionally found in smartphones and tablets, will support the vehicle's digital systems at lower energy rates and also allow for shorter lead times in getting concepts to market.In addition to powering infotainment systems that allow for web browsing and Google Earth integrations, they will also give automakers the ability to replace traditional dashboards with instrument cluster systems, or digital dashboards."By leveraging technology from the very latest smartphones and tablets, Audi is leading the market with innovations that enhance safety and make driving more enjoyable," said Ricky Hudi, the company's chief executive engineer, at Audi's official conference at CES.For Audi, this means that they will be able to offer cars like the next-generation A3 model beginning in 2013, which features an integrated touchpad system and mounted monitor with the ability to render 3D imaging. SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Apple on Friday suffered a major setback in its global patent war, as a German court ruled over its copyright infringement battle in favor of Motorola Mobility.The German court ruled that Apple's iPhone and iPad infringe a Motorola patent and issued an injunction banning the import of iPhones and 3G-capable iPads into Germany.The dispute, one of Apple's several patent lawsuits around the world, is over a Motorola patent essential to GPRS. Motorola has been negotiating with Apple over licensing terms and conditions since 2007, and it will continue its efforts to resolve its global patent dispute as soon as practicable, said Motorola Mobility in a statement on Friday."We're going to appeal the court's ruling right away. Holiday shoppers in Germany should have no problem finding the iPad or iPhone they want," an Apple spokesman told tech news site AllThingsD.Apple is not too concerned about losing out in the Christmas shopping season as it has plenty of iPhones and iPads in Germany already, AllThingsD cited unidentified sources as saying.The ruling is against Apple's European sales company and only impacts its products sold in Germany. The German court also ruled that Motorola is entitled to a damages award.Apple can appeal the ruling to a higher court and request a stay of the injunction, according to a blog post of Florian Mueller, a U.S. patent expert who has been closely following patent lawsuits in the mobile industry.Mueller said should Apple make the appeal but the court declines the stay, Motorola must post a 100 million euro (around 134 million U.S. dollars) bond before the court will enforce the injunction.In August, Apple also filed a suit in Germany over the design of Motorola's tablet Xoom, which runs Google's Android system. But Apple did not make it clear whether it will seek to block the sales of Xoom in Europe.Also on Friday, Samsung won an appeal from the Australian High Court overturning a previous Apple victory that effectively banned Samsung from selling its Galaxy Tab in Australia.Based on claims of infringing Apple's patents, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant has been seeking court order to block Samsung's Galaxy line of mobile devices around the world.A German court issued an injunction in August, blocking Samsung from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets across all European Union members, except for the Netherlands.On Thursday, Apple said it will appeal a San Jose, California judge's refusal to ban sales of Samsung 4G smartphones and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in the United States.
