HANGZHOU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said Saturday his country welcomes Chinese investors.     Zardari made the call during his visit to Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, the first leg of his ongoing China tour. A total of 43 Pakistan companies have their businesses in Zhejiang, yielding fruitful results in silk, water conservation, agriculture, among others, according to Zardari.     Zardari said his country will introduce a package of favorable policies for businesses in Zhejiang to invest in Pakistan, which will inject a new vitality into its economy.     Officials from Pakistan's investment promotion departments said Chinese investors are needed by Pakistan's agriculture, hydro power and energy sectors. The infrastructure alone will require an initial investment of 110 billion U.S. dollars.     Chinese fruit preservers can also play a crucial role in Pakistan as about 40 percent of Pakistan's fruit can not be moved to other places due to the lack of freezing vehicles, according to Pakistani officials, who commented on the basis of anonymity.     Zardari was paying his fourth visit to China since taking office last September.     He attributed his frequent visits to the intent of bringing back home China's experience in development. TEL AVIV, Israel, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Israeli President Shimon Peres Thursday lauded the great achievements made by China over the past 60 years when attending a reception held by Chinese Embassy in Israel to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     At the reception held at the residence of Chinese Ambassador to Israel Zhao Jun, Peres stressed that China currently plays an important role in the world.     He said that due to the great achievements made by China over the past 60 years, Chinese people are now becoming more affluent and confident, noting that "Israel loves China."     Highlighted the important role China is playing in the world, Peres said that "a peaceful China is a peaceful world."     Before Peres' speech, Zhao said that the reception was also held to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Israel.     China has made remarkable achievements over the years, said the Chinese ambassador, adding that despite the progress, China remains a developing country and will continue its development.     He added that the relationship between China and Israel is continuing to develop in many fields, while China is now Israel's biggest trading partner in Asia.     Zhao also mentioned the "Experience China in Israel" event, which will be held in October in Israel in a bid to show the development of China in many domains: education, economy, technology and especially the Chinese contemporary culture.

URUMQI, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Seven hundred and eighteen people have been detained for being implicated in the Urumqi riot on July 5 which left 197 people dead and more than 1,600 injured, Urumqi City police chief Chen Zhuangwei said Tuesday.     Chen, head of the Public Security Department of Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, said evidence collection had been a heavy load for the city's police force. It had involved examinations at the crime scenes and DNA evaluations, but it had been carried out swiftly. BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 570 billion yuan (about 83.5 billion U.S. dollars) during the National Day holiday, with average daily sales up 18 percent compared with the same period of last year, the Ministry of Commerce said Friday.     Sales of household appliances soared during the eight-day holiday which started from Oct. 1. Among them, high-definition flat screen TV sets, digital cameras, side-by-side refrigerators and 3G mobile phones are consumers' favorites. In the case of Kaiyuan Mall in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, sales of household appliances gained by 34.7 percent year on year. Customers are seen at a shopping mall in Shanghai, east China, Oct. 8, 2009    Jewelry and cars became hot sellers as well. The sales of jewelry of Caishikou Department Store in Beijing topped 100 million yuan, up 30 percent year on year. Car sales of major car-selling companies in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality increased by 71.7 percent year on year.     The selling boom in the home appliance and car sectors was partly stimulated by a policy approved by the State Council in June this year, aiming to spur domestic consumption by subsidizing buyers of cars and household appliances, according to the ministry.     For example, consumers can first sell their old household appliances to recycling companies and obtain a certification card from the recyclers. Card holders then can purchase new appliances with a 10 percent cut in prices when showing retailers the card.     Meanwhile, sales promotion in major cities also played an important role in the holiday consumption boom.

MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR) Legislative Election General Auditing Committee announced the official results of the election of the fourth Legislative Assembly of Macao on Tuesday night.     In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 29 seats including 12 directly-elected seats, 10 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     A total of 122 candidates from 16 groups contested in the direct elections, while the indirect elections did not take place since only 10 candidates have been fielded by the four constituencies involved for the 10 seats.     Eight of the 12 candidates who won the direct elections were veteran lawmakers that have served their terms in the legislature, which includes Kwan Tsui Hang, Chan Meng Kam, Ng Kuok Cheong, Angela Leong On Kei, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, Lee Chong Cheng, Ung Choi Kun, and Au Kam San were the winners of the direct elections, while Ho Ion Sang, Mak Soi Kun, Chan Wai Chi and Melinda Chan Mei Yi become the new faces in the legislature.     For the part of indirect elections, the list of winners comprises Ho Iat Seng, Kou Hoi In, Fong Chi Keong, and Cheang Chi Keong of the industrial, commercial and financial sector; Lau Cheok Va, Lam Heong Sang of labor sector; Chui Sai Cheong and Leonel Alberto Alves of professional sector; Vitor Cheung Lup Kwan and Chan Chak Mo of social, cultural, educational and sports sector.     The election of the fourth term of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR officially started Sunday morning. The authorities delayed announcing the results of the legislative election because6,539 ballots were found to be spoiled, the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs committee said Monday.     Some 149,006 of the total 249,886 registered voters cast their ballots during the polling period, but 6,539 of these ballots were deemed as invalid, according to the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs Committee.     This year's voter turnout stood at 59.9 percent, compared with 58.39 percent in the previous legislative election in 2005.     The results of the legislative election still need to be submitted to the SAR's Court for final approval, and the confirmed results will be published on the SAR's Official Gazette on Sept. 30 at the latest.
